Default NHL negotiations: Reports of a breakthrough on major cap issues

NHL, players agree on salary cap
Posted: Wednesday June 8, 2005 5:23PM; Updated: Wednesday June 8, 2005 5:23PM

TORONTO (Reuters) -- The two sides in the NHL lockout have agreed on a salary-cap system, eliminating the biggest stumbling block to the resumption of play next season, according to a Canadian newspaper's website.

Although details of the proposed agreement were not released on Wednesday, the Globe and Mail reported that a source close to the owners said there would be a team-by-team salary cap, based on a percentage of the revenue of each franchise.

The league has previously demanded that the cap be 54 percent of a team's revenue.

However, this does not mean that an overall deal on the lockout is imminent. Negotiators for the players and owners are now working on other issues such as salary arbitration and free agency, according to GlobeandMail.com.

NHL vice-president Bill Daly, the league's chief negotiator, declined to confirm or deny reports of a salary-cap deal.

But he did say publicly on Tuesday that negotiators had moved on to other issues.

The lockout caused the cancellation of the 2004-05 season.

i dont think any of us are in the mood to get jerked around anymore. I hope this is legit. Now if they can just clean up the other issues, conduct a draft, get Crosby to Pittsburgh and start the season! Just bring back hockey already.

I bet the cap isn't going to be 42.5 million like the owners offered.

I kinda watched the playoffs, altho I'm not a big hockey fan. Hopefully these greedy idiots can work something out.

It never was going to be once the season was canceled and any player who actually thought that drank Goodenow's Kool-Aid.

Salary cap to be based on percentage of revenue of each teamESPN.com news services

TORONTO -- The NHL and the NHL Players' Association have agreed on a salary-cap system, eliminating the biggest stumbling block to the resumption of play next season, the Toronto Globe and Mail reported on its Web site Wednesday.

The paper reported that a source close to the owners, and another close to both owners and players, said there would be a team-by-team salary cap, based on a percentage of the revenue of each franchise.

In what is believed to be a six-year agreement, based on revenue projections by both sides, the salary cap will range from $34 million to $36 million, with the floor from $22 million to $24 million.

The league has previously demanded that the cap be 54 percent of a team's revenue.

However, this does not mean that an overall deal on the lockout is imminent. Negotiators for the players and owners are now working on other issues such as salary arbitration and free agency, according to GlobeandMail.com.

"They still have a ways to go," one source told the paper, although with the cap issue settled there is reason to hope a deal can be reached by early July.

NHL vice-president Bill Daly, the league's chief negotiator, declined to confirm or deny reports of a salary-cap deal.

But he did say publicly on Tuesday that negotiators had moved on to other issues, including salary arbitration, free agency, qualifying contract offers and others.

The lockout caused the cancellation of the 2004-05 season.

Of course not. How silly of us deprived hockey fans to think otherwise.

That stuff is relatively easy, if they've got a cap, the major hurdle has been cleared.

Team-by-team salary cap?

That doesn't rhyme with parity.

If the range is only $2M like they say, whatever as long as they start playing in October.

if the minors mean anything, the Flyers are stacked. their ECHL affiliate, Trenton Titans, won the ECHL championship. And their AHL affiliate, the Philadelphia Phantoms, is up 2-0 in the Calder Cup Finals. mike richards and jeff carter will battle it out for rookie of the year. lets get some phantom love, hogan, ozo, philly?

According to the formula, a dollar-for-dollar luxury tax will kick in at the midway point between the floor and the cap. If the floor of the lowest team proves to be $22-million and the cap on the highest team is $36-million next season, then the tax will come into effect at $29-million.
Not a bad luxury tax either

ouch. right now the phantoms are all i have. so i will still go crazy for them. we need a flyers-avalanche stanley cup to liven up this board. that would be really interesting. of course, the flyers would sweep, but it would be fun to talk about, right?

Not trying to jump the gun here but when this CBA stuff gets resolved, it will only be the beginning of an even bigger smozzle. There's so many restricted players that are not under contract right now and boatloads of UFA's on top of that. There will be alot of player movement by the time the Fall rolls around.

Supposedly the main stumbling block right now is the UFA issue. The age limit will likely drop a year or two to offer a small concession to the PA in exchange for all that the PA gave up on.

Bottom line is that alot of teams will look alot different this coming season.

He is a big goalie, but I wonder how his positional style will work with smaller equipment.

Your point is? The Sens will still whip the stinking Flyers

Mike Richards and Jeff Carter don't beat out the AHL MVP Jason Spezza

Infact, The Sens are more stacked than the Flyers.
