Default Nice write-up on Rice from NY Daily News.

Stirring Rice

Shame on anybody who criticizes Jurassic Rice (uh, make that Jerry) for trying to add another year to his legendary career. The 42-year-old Rice, who made his Broncos debut last week in minicamp, should be celebrated for still having the passion to play football.

Some say Rice is tarnishing his legacy, but that's utter nonsense. Do we think any less of Willie Mays because he fell down in center field for the Mets? Did Johnny Unitas hurt his legend by finishing his career with a bad year in San Diego? No.

Giants GM Ernie Accorsi, who worked for the Baltimore Colts, was around Unitas in his heyday. Accorsi saw in Unitas what he sees in Rice - an unquenchable desire to compete. He recalled a poignant Unitas moment from the early 1970s, a brutally hot day in training camp.

"Unitas was walking down a hill to the field, throwing a ball up in the air, whistling. I said, 'It's going to be hot out there today.' He was about 38, near the end of his career. Unitas says, 'What else would you rather be doing than playing football?'

"That's why they're great," Accorsi said of Unitas, Rice and players of that ilk. "They love it too much. They hate to give it up."

Slam on Shanny.............. I have an excerpt of this in the NFL report, but the rest is below. Ouch!

Out pattern

Troubled WR Koren Robinson, who looked like a future star when he was a first-round pick in 2001, is on the market. Robinson, who served a drug suspension last season, was dumped by the Seahawks after a recent drunk-driving arrest. Maybe he'll wind up in Denver, where Mike Shanahan has turned into a garbage collector. (See Todd Sauerbrun, Ron Dayne, Maurice Clarett, etc.) Shanahan, who used to work for Al Davis, is turning the Broncos into the Raiders - a haven for screw ups and rejects. Maybe Shanahan can sign some of the inmates from "The Longest Yard.

I still can't believe how big a deal people are making over the Broncos 4th receiver.

I know, but if Rice is so washed up and will be as irrelevant to the proceedings as most writers claim he will, what's the big deal? I mean other than it's early June and they have nothing else to write about.

Where's the sideline? Rice is trying to get out of bounds to stop the clock.

Have to agree with that. Ron Dayne was a waste. Or should we call him Ron 'please dont hit me' Dayne who has never used his power and turned to finesse running. But maybe he MIGHT be some what good here like at Wisconsin, were he ran behind almost all all americans and here we have Running Backs Paradise. Now Maurice Clarrett IMO was a publicity stunt. The last publicity we had in Denver was Jakes beard. Denver is a boring town without our players like Eddie Kennison and Shannon Sharpe who talk smack and run their mouth to the media(dont take it the wrong way i love Shannon as much as the next Bronco Fan). I think we had more publicity with the selection of Maurice Clarrett than our 2 Super Bowls combined.

Just my .02 (exaggeration on the more publicity than our 2 super bowls)

You honestly think the FO would use a third round choice on MC when other good players were still on the board for the sole purpose of some publicity

The only thing Rice will bring to this team is advice for your other recievers, that's it.

It doesn't matter to me that he went to you guys, we released him, and I like him as much as the next guy but he will take valuable time away from a young prospect by being on the team.

He will make 0 impact on this team and will probably retire by game 6 .

A third round pick for a publicity stunt now why didn't I think of that ,,,, I know why because it a an exceedingly ridiculous statement that's why.

How is it a ridiculous statement when you think about? For the past 2 years hes been in and out of court for the age limit for the Draft and allegations about OSU and Jim Tressel. He ran a 4.8 at the combine, Mel Kiper thought he would be picked late if not picked at all. Now we're sitting there as a boring team with no TOs begging for money, no Moss' mooning a rival crowd, or no Ahman Green's abusing their wifes. We are a respecting team that goes about our business and gets the job done. When we do have a 'bump in the road' like a Clinton Portis begging for money or Romo spitting in JJ Stokes face, WE GET RID OF THEM! Portis got traded and Romo got released. We've had 0 publicity since Sharpe retired. He was our only publicity with that mouth of his. And i guess we got tired of watching other teams 'drama' if you call it that being spread out all over ESPN and when we dont even get a part of the show. So we're sitting there with the #101 pick in the draft, slap full of running backs and we see Maurice Clarett's name on our board. And we take this out of shape baby and we suddenly think PUBLICITY! And we take him and then we end up with basically 2 hours on ESPN for the next 2 days.

Just my .02.

I know i might be still angry we even wasted a pick on that clown and want to point at anything that comes to mind as why we picked him. Maybe im a lil immature but i dont know. Just my view on the subject

There's no way that we took Clarett for publicity! The only kind of publicity we've gotten for that move is bad publicity. Shanahan took him because at least one member of his staff believes the kid has potential. I don't really see Shanahan as a publicity hound. Love him or hate him, he does what he thinks is right for the Broncos. This was a low risk move and at worst everybody in the media will laugh at Shanahan, but we are not the only team that would have taken a chance on Clarett. We haven't even gotten to preseason yet, so hold off on your anger until you see how things develop. It's way too early to pass judgment on this move....

Not trying to "put you in your place". Everybody's entitled to their opinion about Clarett and the rest of our draft and other off-season moves. You'll find there's lots of people on the Mane who don't care for the Clarett pick. I'm not smart enough to know if it was a good move or not, but I don't think it was a publicity stunt. We'll just have to wait and see how many of our numerous off-season acquisitions pay off. I like the fact that the Broncos have gambled a lot this year. Here's to hoping it gets us deep into the playoffs! Again, welcome to the Mane!
