Default Taylor turns himself in, charged with felony, misdemeanor

Hopefully team leader Clinton Portis () can keep this team from imploding

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2075361

Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor, described as a "person of interest" in an assault case, turned himself in to Miami-Dade County police on Saturday, ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reported. Taylor has been charged with aggravated assault with a firearm, a felony, and simple battery.

The assault happened Wednesday night and shots were fired, police spokesman Mary Walters said. No one was injured.

According to a police statement, Taylor pointed a gun at an unidentified person Wednesday during a dispute over two all-terrain vehicles he claimed were stolen. Taylor left the scene but returned about 10 minutes later and punched one person.

Police had been looking for Taylor since Friday.

"We have just been made aware of a potential situation in Miami regarding Sean Taylor," the Redskins said in a statement Saturday night. "The representatives for Taylor are keeping us informed as to the developments of the situation. There is nothing we can add to the process at this time."

Taylor's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, did not return a phone message left by The Associated Press late Saturday.

Another man, Charles Elwood Caughman, threatened and chased another victim with a baseball bat, police said. Caughman, 19, was arrested later that day and charged with aggravated assault.

Taylor, who wants a new contract, has been working out in Miami despite pleas from coach Joe Gibbs to join the team in voluntary workouts at their home base in suburban Washington. He signed a seven-year, $18 million deal as the No. 5 overall draft pick in the 2004 draft.

The former Miami Hurricanes standout has had a tempestuous start to his NFL career.

He has fired two agents, was fined for skipping one day of the NFL's mandatory rookie symposium and was accused of spitting on a player during a game at Cincinnati, although he was not punished because the league said there was no video evidence.

He was also charged with drunken driving in October, when he was pulled over at 2:45 a.m. after attending a birthday party for receiver Rod Gardner. Those charges were dismissed in January.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

I get the feeling that they are VERY close to the edge now. One key injury like last year and I think they are done.

I can't think of another teams 1st rounder next year that I would prefer Denver to have.

If they pull out of this tailspin this year and finish over 500 I would vote Gibbs for coach of the year.

I wonder what the response from the league will be? A nice 4 game suspension might be just what the doctor ordered...

San Fran and Cleveland are probably the only two other possibilities

I don't know, did Ray Ray get suspended for helping to cover up a double homicide?

Taylor should be done until charges are dropped or he's found not guilty, he shot at someone.

Well, he pointed the gun at someone. He might have fired the shots in the air like Doss did but how stupid do you have to be, The Redskins should just dump the guy. HAHAHA

I'm not sure if he got suspended but the league did slap a 250k fine on him...

Wow, I heard about this, but didn't realize the events were as serious as they appear to be.

If Taylor is convicted, he really could face years in prison.

Then again, Jamal Lewis was caught red-handed making a drug deal on his phone & he basically skates on a 6-month hand slap.

Separation of the classes I suppose...as it is, has been and always will be.

The redskins potential problems

1. QB issues _Ramsey vs. Campbell
2. The star LB pissed because feels that team cheat out of $6M, coming off injury
3. The starting RB that doesn’t fit the style of team
4. Oline that might suck up the middle
5. Shawn Spring is only proven CB
6. A bunch of midget WRs.
7. No pass rush.
8. Your number #1 pick last going off the deep end

Here is an article. It says were shot into a vehicle. To me that sounds like attempted murder.

Taylor Turns Himself In to Miami-Dade Police
Redskins Safety Was Charged With Aggravated Assault, Simple Battery According to Two Reports

By Jason La Canfora
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, June 5, 2005; Page E01

ESPN.com and the Miami Herald reported that Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor turned himself in to the Miami-Dade Police Department last night and was charged with a felony count of aggravated assault with a firearm as well as simple battery, but police officials would not confirm that and continued to say that Taylor was a person of interest in this case.

The Herald said Taylor turned himself in, accompanied by his lawyer, about 10 p.m. last night at the Cutler Ridge district police station and was taken to Turner Guilford Knight correctional facility.

Reports say safety Sean Taylor turned himself in Saturday to answer questions from police regarding an incident that occured Wednesday in Miami. (Jonathan Newton - The Washington Post)

Redskins 2005

Redskins safety Sean Taylor reportedly is charged with one count of aggravated assault and one count of simple battery stemming from an incident in Miami.

Taylor, 22, selected with the fifth overall pick in the 2004 draft, and a friend were at the scene of an incident involving a stolen car and shots being fired on Wednesday night, a police spokeswoman said on Friday, and was wanted for questioning in the case, although the department would not stipulate if he was a suspect, victim or witness. As of 1 a.m. this morning police officials were still calling him a person of interest and would not confirm any other information or elaborate on the subject.

Several police staff members spoken to late Saturday night said they had been instructed by the department's media relations department that no new information was available and that they would issue a news release if or when developments warranted. A source at the Miami-Dade Correctional Facility said that as of 12:45 this morning Taylor's name did not appear in their arrest information, but added that it could take several hours for that to occur if someone was in the process of being questioned by police.

Taylor's mother, Donna Junor, said that she did not know if her son was being questioned and still had not heard from him recently. "I'm not aware of that," she said when reached at her house at about 11:30 p.m. "I don't know anything about that."

The Washington Redskins had not acknowledged the situation until after 11 p.m. last night, when the team released a statement saying: "We have just been made aware of a potential situation in Miami regarding Sean Taylor. The representatives for Taylor are keeping us informed as to the developments of the situation. There is nothing we can add to the process at this time."

Taylor's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, has not returned repeated phone calls for the past two days.

Police officials have said no one was injured in this incident. One police source said Friday that the scene took place in a residential area in south Florida and shots were fired into a stolen vehicle, but the nature of Taylor's presence there and any involvement in the case was unclear. At that time police said they did not know if the stolen vehicle had belonged to Taylor or his friend or someone else.

Police investigators had contacted Taylor's family and league officials hoping to find him, but several of Taylor's family members said on Friday that they did not know where he has been. His father, Pedro, is chief of police in Florida City, but was unwilling to speak to this matter when reached on Friday, directed reporters to call Junor. Taylor has not been at Redskins Park since the end of the season in January and has had no contact with team officials, refusing to return calls from Coach Joe Gibbs and his staff.

Taylor, who left the University of Miami after his junior season, has spent much of the offseason in south Florida, where he makes his home, while skipping the club's voluntary workouts, with Gibbs expressing his disappointment in that decision on numerous occasions.

While Taylor, who attended the University of Miami, had a strong rookie season on the field, he was plagued by problems off of it.

Taylor was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated in October, suspended for one game by the team, and then later acquitted. He fired his agent twice before returning to Rosenhaus due to unhappiness with the six-year deal -- worth a maximum of $40 million -- the he had signed under previous representation. Taylor was fined $25,000 by the league after leaving its mandatory rookie symposium without permission and a member of the Cincinnati Bengals accused Taylor of spitting on him during a game last season, although the NFL could not find evidence of the claim after investigating it.

SoCalBronco broke this whole story over at Extremeskins a day early (w/o the precise details).

The first 6 pages of his thread are just a bunch of Skins fans calling it a non-skin fan fueled lie, and at the same time assuring each other that ST isn't that stupid ......

Then the news hit for real .... it was a great thread.

it looks pretty bad for Sean right now. There was some commentary on the Hurricanes board and now on the Skins board about Florida's 10-20-Life law regarding felonies although there is a little dispute about whether it applies to all felonies or just some. This is pretty serious though either way. Its really a shame because he has more ability than even Ronnie Lott and he very well could have thrown it away. We'll see.

Well Denver certainly looks like the got the right Miami player in the draft last year. KWII has missed two seasons already and Taylor might miss the rest of his career before it ever gets started.

Wait, its just the legal system and not injury. I'm sure he walks with more hand slappings and then sits out the year in a contract dispute while getting another arrest for disorderly conduct and resisiting arrest. Yeah, that sounds more like it! Damn socal, the U boys are making FSU look like a seminary these days

What burns me the most about that, is that Jamal Lewis was able to serve his time during the offseason. The justice system made sure it maneuvered the sentence around Jamal's Schedule. I mean what does the Justice System think Lewis is, a politician or something.

Jamal Lewis needs to serve his time during the season, and get docked that year's salary to boot. Complete BS!!

The 10-20-life law is for gun related felonies down here.

Pull a gun - 10 years

Shoot someone - 20 years

Kill someone - Life

Taylor could really be ****ed if someone decides to make an example of him.

Thanks for clarifying. Yep, he could be in a world of hurt. What a shame. Made his bed though, now he has to sleep in it.
