Default ESPN passed on NHL?

i heard this this morning. forgot to post about it.

the radio said espn passed on a televesion contract with the nhl.
they also said that contract was for only 30 million?

what does it say about the state of the nhl when espn wont even spend 30 million to televise the games (if they ever resume again) ?

im getting kinda worried here.

whats going to be the new 4th major sport in this country?
soccer? God i hope not
golf? not even a team sport.
arena football? im a new fan, but replacing hockey?

hockey needs to rebound, but without television what will happen?
i still just cant believe they cancelled an entire season.
for a sport already hurting, that was the dumbest move in history.

what next?

I think we talked about this once before. It's just another shovel full of dirt from the hole the NHL & NHLPA have dug for themselves.

ESPN will probably negotiate a cheaper deal and broadcast the games, but the revenue sharing pie just got smaller for everyone.

hmm.... I'm thinking LAX.

but seriously though, I did not pay any attention to hockey, but I think it would be a real benefit to the public if it came back.

It would be scary if NASCAR did though, if you call that a sport.

ESPN lost serious $$$'s on the NHL.

Stump the Schwab gets a bigger audience.

At this point the only reason to carry it is for some diversity in programming.

Where are all these hockey fans when it comes time to watch the games?

A lot of them are up in Canada watching on TSN, CBC or Rogers Sportsnet. The ones down here in The States, a lot of the time, are watching their teams games on their local affiliate.

Perhaps if ESPN showed more than 8 teams in a year they'd attract a more diverse audience. Perhaps if ESPN cared to promote the games a little, they might create a bit more interest. Perhaps if the NHL marketed their players the way all of the other major sports do, people would be interested in them and be compelled to watch once in a while. Perhaps if the NHL made an effort to make the on-ice product more enjoyable to watch (don't get me started on that), people would be more apt to tune in.

There are things that can be tried. There's no guarantee that they'll succeed, but it's a lot more intriguing than the snoozefest the NHL has been trotting out there for the past few years.

I always thought hockey suffered because so many fans still play in leagues and/or support local hockey so they don't always sit home and watch the pros.

I played mostly the traditional 3 sports growing up.

My friends that grew up playing hockey and lacrosse still play in leagues, while I watch Football and Basketball on TV. At least I'm paid to do it.....

Hockey is such a great game to see in person that it does lose something in translation on television. I've known several people who didn't much care to watch it on television but would jump at the chance to go to a game.

I had posted this a couple of days ago on the other hockey thread, and no one responded, so I figured none of you were too worried either because you would get Center Ice like I do/did.

I guess I would start to worry if it came to playoff time and CI wasn't carrying games. When hockey comes back, I'll still be here.....sigh. I'm thinking we should all get a big discount on CI this year for having to suffer this crap.

That looks great!! Thanks MT. Undoubtedly they should name that penguin, Mario.

On this ESPN thing, its the only rational choice for ESPN. The pie is already split in half. The league and the NHLPA turned a 2 billion pie into a 1 billion pie. It doesnt make economic sense to make a such an investment when the return isnt going to be that high. Its only sensible to think ratings will be adversely affected.

ESPN just thinks they can get it cheaper then what they were supposed to pay. If they don't bid after a new CBA is in place, then worry.

So what Herc is really saying is that if ESPN doesn't call back when hell freezes over, we should be concerned.

Not much to really pass on actually. Of course they are going to cancel the contract. They are not playing.

Now everyone is sitting on their thumbs. We have all seen the public outrage about the NHL, how everyones life has been damanged.

Once the NHL learns they are a second tier sport, they might wake up.

I like penguins.

I have another handle "Tuxedo"

I mean, your brought into life on a iceflow out of an egg, you have to get out thru Leopard Seals.

Just being hatched from an egg on top of ice is something I can't believe.

Then they all make a run for it. They can't fly, oh no. they get to jump into subarctic water as little penguins, and the leopard seals feast.

How this species survied is a total mytery to me.

I heard on the sports radio station here in Ottawa that ESPN was looking for a similiar deal as what NBC got. And that ain't going to be much for the NHL money-wise.

I pay for Center Ice. A real hockey fan hasn't relied on ESPN for programming for a few years anyway.

Only hockey thread on the 1st page, so here's the rumored deal on the table now:

Salary floor: $24M
Ceiling: $37-38M
Luxury tax: 100% on anything over $34M
24% rollback too

Klatt, Irbe, and Damphousse are against the deal
Linden, Guerin, and Boughner are for it. More players are in this camp.

Nice job Goodenow, you should have taken the owners' final proposal back in February.
