Default Prior has a slight elbow fracture

I was listening to that game on the radio when it happened and even the Rockies announcers sounded genuinely dismayed and concerned for Mark Prior. They reported later that the ball came off of Hawpe's bat at 117 MPH when it struck Prior who was only about 53 feet away.

Here's to a speedy recovery. Man, the Cubs have a got a pair of aces that any team would covet but they just can't seem to stay on the field.

Prior has certainly had his run of bad luck. I'd rather get his in the jewels or even the noggin rather than have my elbow suffer trauma. That ball was a real rocket off the bat. Hopefully he will recover. I don't think the Cubs were going anywhere this year anyway. Bring him back next year after some rehab.

I don't know if Wood ever really deserved the ace title. I'm one of the people who thinks he should be moved to closer. He has wicked stuff, but his short attention span seems to get him into trouble way too often.

Prior just seems to be snakebit. When healthy, he's a legitimate top five starter. I have him on three roto teams and I want to throw up right now. I was desperate for SP in one league and I traded Ichiro for Prior and Corey Patterson last month. I was perfectly happy with that deal until yesterday, now that team is pretty much dead in the water.

Today, the Chicago Cubs send LaTroy Hawkins to the San Francisco Giants for young pitchers Jerome Williams and David Aardsma.

Say what you want about Hawkins' closer struggles, he is a legitimate 7th-8th inning setup man and one of the best in all of baseball.

Considering the Cubs bulllpen troubles, this is more of a long-term pitching depth type move. Williams was brilliant as a rookie in 03 and adequate in his sophomore campaign, but he's in a bad rut at the moment and I think the Cubs would be crazy to stick him in the back end of the rotation. Batters were hitting .368 against him at AAA Fresno. Aardsma was drafted as a 1st round pick reliever from Houston and he got moved into the rotation at AA Norwich. He's not quite as overpowering as a starter and I wonder if the Cubs will move him back into the bullpen.

I think the Giants get a proven commodity for their awful bullpen but this deal could comeback and haunt them over the long-term.

The Byunger had to pitch to Derrick Lee today, with predictable results.

That was the first inning homer. He chased him with another in the sixth.

Apparently Derrick Lee passed away in the off season and came back as Lou Gehrig.

That's it? Just for LaTroy Hawkins? Holy hell did the Giants get raped in that deal!

Shows you how far Williams has fallen in their eyes.

I guess so, especially with the Giants minor league pitching staff, but Williams was still only 25 or 26 years old and Aardsma is a stud that could pitch in the rotation or in the bullpen, he seemed pretty lights out from anywhere.

Drafting Derrek Lee in thirteenth round of my keeper league was my best draft selection this season.

Lee is as well rounded of a 1B you will find. How often do you find a 1B who will give you 20 bags? Not to mention his Gold Glove caliber defense. At seven million per season, he is quite a bargain for the Cubs.

Too bad he's basically their lone bright spot this season.

David Aardsma is a product of metro Denver's powerhouse Cherry Creek High School.

Derrek Lee hitting two HR's off the "Byunger" , that's just shocking.

Todd Helton is in one of the worst slumps I've ever seen a great hitter have. This Rockies team is getting harder and harder to watch.

Helton is pressing big time. I've watched him swing at pitches this year that he'd have never considered swinging at in years past. He's not getting much to hit, he's frustrated and he's lost his patience at the plate. The sooner the Rockies deal him, the better. Drop him in that Orioles lineup and watch him return to form pretty quick.

At least the road trip is about over. Of course as soon as they get home they get to go up against St. Louis. The beat goes on.

You don't have to tell me about this one, I've been lamenting the poor fortunes of Peter Forsberg for a decade now.

The guy's only played a full 82 games in a season once and he put up 116 points that year. Prior seems to be in the same boat thus far. A great player and a joy to watch but just can't seem to stay in the lineup for one reason or another.

I didn't think it was even possible for Todd Helton to go 2-38. Jeter's slump to start the year last season was worse, though.

I wanted to break something yesterday myself. That goddamn ball could have hit him practically anywhere else and it would have been better. Damn buzzard luck.

It hit him so hard that it was actually caught on the ricochet for the out.

Probably a good thing. I only saw a replay of it but it was nasty. Prior dropped as if he'd been shot.

I was listening to the radio on the way home from work and 950 The Fan was doing their regular "Hardball" segment in which they spend a segment talking to Drew Goodman (Rockies television play by play man). They didn't even discuss the game, they just talked about Prior.

I guess I never realized just how highly thought of that Prior is nationally because even hours afterwards Goodman sounded saddened by what had happened. Even Sandy Clough talked about how "unfortunate it is for baseball fans everywhere that a magnificent player like Prior can't seem to stay healthy."

I was shocked when they first reported that the X-rays had come back negative. It wasn't shocking to learn that further tests found a fracture.

I don't claim to be an expert on baseball pitching, but does that look like a delivery that basically says, "I'm going to give you an underspeed fastball up in the strikezone" or what.

Maybe it just a bad photo, but that delivery looks like something just made to hammer. What is with the splits and throwing across the body?

See: "Rockies are a Disgrace" thread. Good Grief. That might be the worst delivery form I have ever seen.

It's literally amusing. He's doing a good job hiding the slider, or a weak fastball that isn't going to rise, he's spread too wide.

I'm surprised this guy didn't fall off the mound. When I look at that, I'm wondering what the hell kind of power he's going to get off that back leg when his testes is practially dragging off the mound. It's pathetic.

How could you POSSIBLY follow thru on a pitch like that without having a coach either pull you or wonder when your going to get injured.

Ah, the Rockies Baseball Club.

Even this kid from College has better form, throwing a split finger fastball.

I'm not making fun of Prior, but what's with the tiny maid in the background and the feedbags at Wrigley?

That was sick, bounced off Prior's elbow and the 3rd baseman made a diving catch for the out right by the 3B bag in foul territory, that was a nasty ricochet.

At least the Rangers had that magical 1994 season.
