Default NHL to propose unique lottery for next draft?

Whenever this lockout does end, the draft will take place......but not just any draft, this is the Sidney Crosby draft. Naturally, everyone wants a shot at that #1 pick, but how do they go about determining the order?

It appears the NHL Board of Governors already has a plan.....and naturally it already smells a bit fishy.

From The Toronto Star
----------------------

The Maple Leafs would have a 1.7 per cent chance of landing Sidney Crosby under the NHL's proposed lottery system for the next entry draft, while the New York Rangers would be one of two teams with the best shot of getting the junior superstar.

Multiple sources say the league's board of governors has in place the framework of a system that will allow each of the NHL's 30 teams a chance at the first overall pick in the next draft and the opportunity to select Crosby, who will be at the Memorial Cup with his Rimouski Oceanic in London starting Saturday.

The proposed system would skew the lottery in favour of teams that have finished out of the playoffs in the past four seasons and not had the first overall selection in any of the past four entry drafts.

Nothing has been passed by the board of governors and isn't expected to be for some time, but it's believed the lottery will work like this:

Each team starts with four balls in the lottery.

Teams lose a ball for each year they qualified for the playoffs in the past four seasons.

Teams also lose a ball if they have had the first overall selection in any of the past four drafts.

Each team is guaranteed at least one ball.

Under that system, there would be a total of 60 balls in the lottery. The Leafs, along with 12 other teams, would have just one chance, giving them a 1.7 per cent likelihood of winning the lottery.

The Rangers and Columbus Blue Jackets would be the only teams in the league to have four balls in the lottery, giving them each a 6.7 per cent chance of winning.

The Blue Jackets had the first overall pick in the 2002 draft and selected Rick Nash, but they traded up for that pick with the Florida Panthers so that pick is assigned to Florida.

If Crosby were to go to the Rangers, it would be an enormous marketing opportunity for the league, which will almost certainly need all the help it can get after a lockout that could stretch into next season.

Sources say the draft order would be reversed each round, meaning the team that picked first overall would have the last selection in the second round.

The system likely won't be put into place officially until a collective bargaining agreement is reached with the players, but one league general manager said revenue sharing would be key to the lottery.

"If there is a system of revenue sharing, and I'd be shocked if there weren't, that's the way it will be," he said. "The attitude of the large market teams is that they're going to be losing some revenues to small markets, so they want some kind of a chance (at Crosby)."

But the proposed deal is sure to draw the ire of the more successful teams, such as the Maple Leafs, who would have shared a 3.3 per cent chance of getting Crosby with the 29 other teams in the league if each team were given a 1in30 chance.

Meanwhile, the Leafs are expected to be more involved in discussions with Crosby's agent after the Memorial Cup about the possibility of him signing with the new Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League if the lockout extends into next season.

AHL president Dave Andrews said yesterday there is nothing in the league's bylaws preventing a team from signing Crosby.

"Sidney Crosby is going to play where Sidney Crosby and his agent decide he's going to play," Andrews said. "Any player who has reached the age of 18 by Sept. 15 is eligible to play in our league if he is appropriately under contract."

The NHL's agreement with the Canadian Hockey League stipulates players in junior hockey must either play in the NHL or in major junior, but that agreement has expired.

Crosby's standard players' contract also stipulates that he must play junior hockey until he either plays in the NHL or his junior eligibility expires, but it has been widely expected Crosby will be allowed to leave the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League after this season for either Europe or the AHL.

Meanwhile, Crosby signed a $2.5 million (U.S.) deal to endorse Reebok's hockey line and it's doubtful that Reebok would want him playing in Moscow or Stockholm instead of Toronto. Len Rhodes, vice-president, marketing for The Hockey Company and Reebok Canada, said the company would have no input on where Crosby ends up.

"We haven't had any discussions with him or his agent in terms of where we would prefer him to play," Rhodes said. "We know that because of the fact he's a superstar, whatever league he plays in will want to showcase him. We want him to play where he gets the maximum exposure within a hockey market. Toronto is definitely is a true hockey market."
-------------------------------------

While I like some things about this lottery, the fact that the Rangers (one of the main reasons the NHL is in the spot it's in now) are being giftwrapped a golden chance to land one of the next great players in hockey makes me want to vomit. Marketing, schmarketing, those pricks deserve a 0% chance at Crosby for the ridiculous contracts they've been routinely handing out over the years.

Other than that, I'm allright with it.

Because that wouldn't allow Bettman to David Stern this lottery.

The NHL lottery has always seemed to be an honest one. If you're really bad, you're likely getting a top 3 pick regardless of who's at the top of the draft.

But now it seems that Bettman is intent on making this a Patrick Ewing lottery. Hell, the ESPN schmucks have been talking about how great it would be to have Crosby land in a large media market like New York for months now.

I'd rather see Crosby in New York (with either the Rangers or Isles) than Columbus, Nashville, Phoenix or other small non-hockey markets. My number one choice for Crosby is Chicago. That's a great hockey town that has been screwed over and over and over by Dollar Bill Wirtz.

If it takes Crosby in New York to help the NHL regain some respectability then I'm for it. At least Ranger fans have continued to show up at the Garden in spite of their playoff drought, and 1994 was pretty cool to watch from afar. The organization is on my bad side for their attempt to steal Sakic and signing so many Avalanche free agents, but their fans are ok in my book.

That's such horse****. So the Caps, who pretty much everyone conceded would be the worst team in the NHL if there was a season this year, will only get 1 ball and be lumped in with teams like Ottawa and the Avs who have not missed the playoffs in the last 4 years, but are still guaranteed at least one ball. If they're going to give everyone a chance at the 1st OA fine, but after that at least do an order based off of the '03-04 standings.

as a Ranger fan i would be extactic. i dont care if its fixed or not, thats how desperate i am for a winning season.

but just so i wont have to hear everyone on tv complain, i wouldnt be upset if he went somewhere else either. cuz i cant take anymore "Rangers Suck" comments.

I'm still amazed that Stern and the NBA got away with the Patrick Ewing/frozen Knicks envelop scam. If congress is "so worried" about the integrity of pro sports and steroids where they hell where they when the league office and commissioner was pulling a scam of that proportion?

The good news is that he got sweet justice when their Manhattan savior retired without a ring.

Blackhawk's could use some revamping...That is probably their 3rd biggest hockey market so that could make some sense but my guess is the ball that is suspiciously weighted different than all the others will have a NYR logo on it.

Since the draft can't be slated by the last season that was played, you got to have every team with at least a shot of winning the first pick. But it's not the end of the world if you end up with the #2 pick with the likes of Gilbert Brule or a Benoit Pouliot out there. There's a good crop of youngsters that may not be at the premiere level of Crosby, but they ain't far off.

There's Brule and Johnson and than a drop, and yes you can go off of the '03-04 standings. There's a good dozen teams that made the playoffs that year that would have made it this year also. Conversely, except for the Penguins the bottom 5 were going to remain the same. To give teams like Ottawa, Toronto, Detroit, and Colorado a shot at the #1 overall completely defeats the purpose of the draft, which is to help the bad teams get better.

i think (and i'm notr a ranger fan) that if the rangers get him, it could be good. naturally i'd rather have the flyers get him but that isn't likely, as we'll have one ball. but if the rangers get him, that could help bring hockey back to NY, and maybe make it one of the big 4 sports agin, instead of lacrosse or arena footbal. it could be a good thing. though not great.
