Default Brady and Patriots agree on extension

From www.profootballtalk.com

ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports that the New England Patriots and quarterback Tom Brady have reached agreement on a long-anticipated contract extension that will pay Brady $60 million through the 2010 season.

Brady will receive a $14.5 million signing bonus, with a $12 million option bonus due in the spring of 2006.

Pasquarelli's report doesn't address the specific timing of the bonus payments. One of the sticking points in negotiations was the number of bonus money installments, and whether all payments would be guaranteed. Although $14.5 million apparentlu is guaranteed now (regardless of when it's paid) and the remaining $12 million apparently will be guaranteed once the team exercises the option bonus in 2006 (barring something unforeseen, such as a Sunday afternoon popping wheelies in a parking lot), it's possible that the money will be paid out over a longer period of time.

The base salaries are $1 million for 2005, $4 million for 2006, $6 million for 2007, $5 million for 2008, $2.3 million for 2009, and $3.5 million 2010. The deal also includes roster bonuses of $3 million each in the final three years of the contract.

The base salaries are $1 million for 2005,

This is an outrage, an injustice!

I don't know how a 26.5 million signing bonus is exactly getting robbed.

Unless he buys a crotch rocket and drives into a curb.

Brady should have gotten more...

Off the topic here, but I need some help if any one knows anything about MLB. Who wins this fantasy trade? Is it way off or close?

Pujols, B Boone, Lowell, Garland and Garciaparra(out for 3mos.)

for

B Roberts, M Mora and M Sweeney

Vick got a deal around 120 mill, Manning, was 100 mill. I recognize and applaud that Tom understands that there is more to the Patriots success than just him, but for all he has done, how he has been clutch especially, i think he did get robbed getting "only" 60 million, compared to what others have gotten. Manning is a great QB and i think the best QB overall, but he is worth 40 million more total than Brady? Come on.

He is rich beyond his wildest dreams but he still got robbed, relatively speaking.

I think Tom knew he could get Manning-type money, but knows how bad that could be for his team in a salary cap league.

He knows first hand what it's done to Manning. I give him a lot of credit for seeing the big picture.

He'll make up the difference in endorsements.

Sorry Peyton will pick that one up. They prefer to have losers hawk their wares.

You serious? I'm assuming you mean 30 HR a season Mike Lowell, and Mike, not Mark, Sweeney. The first guy would be giving too much if he gave Pujols for Roberts, Mora, and Sweeney. A top 5 player in the league is worth a whole lot more than a flash in the pan 2B, and two contact hitting corners.

Look at these guys stats... Roberts is forreal and Mora was ranked #26 in yahoo's preseason rankings. Lowell and Boone have been horrid! I was offering Pujols and company, but have recently canceled that trade. I want Roberts and Mora, so would Pujols for those 2 be fair considering the guy is first in our H2H league?

Hey, you just wanted whether it was a good deal or not, and it simply isn't. Pujols is the best hitter in baseball ignoring position with Bonds out of the picture. Vlad Guerrerro is the only guy with as much statistical value, thanks to his steals. Roberts is hardly what I'd call "for real" after 30 games. Mora also is an overrated fantasy player, much like Miguel Cabrera and a handful of other top 50's. He's good, but his best years compare pretty evenly to Lowell's recent upswing.

Obviously you'll do what you think is best, but Pujols is on another planet compared to everyone else in that deal as a fantasy baseball player.

I think a figure like that is ridiculously low for a player like Brady. Regardless of how good people think he is... he is a franchise player. Regardless of what people may think of his skill, he is a perfect player for New Englands system, and has led them to 3 super bowls in four years.

I agree.

So, out of curiosity, I went to Finheaven to see comments. The genius that posted the news over there had this to say:

Brady takes far less money than he could have easily demanded and Phish fans think it's a cap killer.

Why am I not surprised.

Smart move by Brady. Manning, Vick, they won't have the best team around them because of the cap room they take up, but as long as NE management doesn't try to suck millions in profit out by not pushing the cap, Brady will have top quality temmates.

New ground has been broken. The starting/winning QB in 3 of the past 4 SB's has signed a diddling contract? Wow.

I'm impressed by how smart that was by Brady.

The great part of this, is that Brady is getting his payday AFTER he earned it, how novel. Win 3 rings, get rich, that's how all contracts should be handled. How lucky is New England to have unearthed this guy?

Finally, here's a real smart player. If he had played it differently, he'd lessen his chances of future playoff runs. As it is now, nobody can predict the future, but Brady set himself up pretty good for being on strong teams, provided ownership does its job.
