Eagles cut lose fast-talking, non-producing Mitchell

By Dan Gelston, Associated Press, 5/6/2005 14:42

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Freddie Mitchell has talked his way out of Philadelphia.

In a move that was no surprise, the Eagles released Mitchell on Friday, cutting ties with the wide receiver after four seasons where he never lived up to his promise as a first-round pick.

''We appreciate everything Freddie has contributed to the Eagles organization over the last four years,'' coach Andy Reid said. ''By releasing him now, it gives him the opportunity for a new start with another team in the NFL.''

Mitchell, picked in the first round out of UCLA in 2001, made more news off the field than on it, labeling himself with a seemingly endless list of self-promoting nicknames like ''The People's Champ,'' ''FredEx,'' and ''First-Down Freddie.'' Before the Super Bowl, Mitchell offended some Patriots when he dissed their secondary in a television interview.

Mitchell said he just knew the numbers not the names of New England's cornerbacks. He singled out Rodney Harrison, saying he ''has something'' for the veteran strong safety. Mitchell also called out New England coach Bill Belichick.

Unhappy over his role as the slot receiver and overshadowed by Terrell Owens, Mitchell criticized his teammates for not backing him up when he trashed talked the Patriots and blasted Donovan McNabb for lacking confidence in him as a go-to receiver.

Mitchell was told not to come to Philadelphia's first mandatory minicamp last week.

''I told him I did not want him here,'' Reid said.

Mitchell played in 63 career games and had 90 catches for 1,263 yards and five touchdowns. On the field, he was best known for his catch on a fourth-and-26 play that kept Philadelphia's season alive in the NFC divisional playoff game against Green Bay in January 2004.

The one thing I was glad to hear on NFL Total Access was that Denver had shown no real interest in Mitchell.

Yes, Schefter wrote that earlier this week.

Yeah, I think it was the Sheister who said it on the show as well. I had gotten concerned cause I was starting to hear rumors that we were thinking of picking him up. We definately don't need an attitude like his around here.

There were no rumors that Denver was picking him up. People speculated they might be interested with nothing to back up that assertion.

Pretty sad that Schefter is a national reporter now and he still gets better info than anyone in town.

WRs are usually risky first-round picks.

Skins fans used the pick they were supposed to receive for Gardener as one of the reasons why their trade with Denver wasn't that bad.

I'm with DF.... Bring him in, see if he can't teach MoC something, the kid is too mello now. If he's going to disappoint like he's "supposed" to then we need some negative influences in turn him into a flava clown!

I just like Mitchell for the invention of the "Fro Hawk," a guy willing to do that with his hair has my vote.

I don't have a problem signing him, it's allready a circus here, what is one more ring?

We sign Saurkraut and Fred ex, we will have a 6 ring circus.

Hes not that consistant to be dominant and hes not that fast and strong on that big pass mcnabb threw him in one game is becuse no corner can cover for that long as well as hes just a possesion wide out nothing more.

God your an idiot. Mitchell has fine speed, and isn't a possesion reciever at all. You just said "on that big pass", so eat the crap your blowing out of your ass.

Mitchell still has the talent to be a #3 easily. People have talked alot about how McNabb, possibly the most overrated QB in history, would look him off when he was wide open, because Freddie DROPS BALLS.

That is his problem. He drops balls. It's not that he isn't getting open. You have absoultely no clue about anything.

Isn't that just the problem?

Two -- count 'em, two -- good catches in four years?

Now back to reality. We allready have established the Denver School of Flavor Clowns, so we don't have to make a new wing for just one more.

I'm not sold on Watts at all. He's worse than Mitchell.

We have a 5 ring circus allready, what's one more flava clown?

The guy still has first round talent, probably better than Watts. I'm all for bringing him in to see if a new scene will settle him down.

I find all of this incredibly amusing.

I don't really care how many meatheads we take in if they fit under the cap and are first round talent. Unlike some people that want to live in the 50's, that's all it is.

Things are blowing apart in Philly, and we could grab this WR for little or nothing. If he busts, we cut him.
