Default Thursday, any Sauerbrun update?

He was supposed to visit sometime this week. You'd think the stellar beat writer from the Post could do better than an after the fact article that was first broke by a Charlotte paper.

on FSRM "the insider edition" (dave krieger, terry frie, sandy clough) had a good laugh about Sauerbrun, but nothing new to report. the host of the show tried to get them to comment on the character issues, but they didn't seem too interested and laughed about the "character issue" because of past moves; carter, Ihop, MoC.....

I'm really curious. They can boot the ball, and he isn't shy on tackling. I don't mind guys talking smack, but when the kicker does it (this guy, Vanderjacked) it seems like a pipsqueak yelling taunts behind his big friends.

My feeling is that if a kicker ends up being a distraction for your team, you weren't going anywhere anyway. Besides, the two most high profile things he's been involved with are the steriods thing (no failed test, only an accusation from a crooked doctor) and getting into with the Gramaticas. I thought the latter was hilarious; those guys *do* look like idiots dancing aroound after extra points like they won the Super Bowl. The funniest injury of all-time is Bill Gramatica tearing his ACL after one of those idiotic celebrations At any rate, we need a legit punter, and he's one of the best. A no-brainer, IMHO.

Sauerbrun will be in Denver on May 9th- and the broncos will only offer a 7th rd. draft choice for his services if everything checks out to their liking.

Broncos may give Sauerbrun fresh legs
By Jeff Legwold, Rocky Mountain News
May 2, 2005

Having already dealt out plenty of second chances this off-season to players they believe needed a fresh start, the Denver Broncos are considering offering another one.

Todd Sauerbrun, a three-time Pro Bowl selection as the Carolina Panthers punter, will visit the Broncos a week from today. If the Broncos like what they hear from the sometimes-controversial punter, they will offer a seventh-round pick in the 2006 draft to the Panthers for his services.

The Panthers are expected to release Sauerbrun after June, and Carolina officials have said there are several teams interested in the veteran. Sauerbrun, who is not attending the team's current mini-camp, will be entering his 11th season in the NFL.

He was also one of the players named in a 60 Minutes Wednesday report last month for having received a prescription for a steroid banned by the NFL. If the league determines Sauerbrun did use a banned steroid, he still could face a four-game suspension.

Also, he was cited in December for driving while impaired in Charlotte, N.C., after, according to published reports, a Breathalyzer test showed a blood-alcohol level of .19 - more than twice the legal limit in North Carolina (.08).

Sauerbrun has three years remaining on his current contract with salary-cap charges of $1.56 million for the upcoming season, $1.655 million in 2006 and $1.760 million in 2007.

Sauerbrun never has had a punt blocked in his career and has averaged more than 44 yards a punt seven times in his career.

Dammit, we don't cheat.

Now we are bringing in the equivelant of Jano as a punter.

Is anyone aware that we have 4 kickers on the Pre-Training camp roster as is;

Jason Elam
Paul Ernster...the 7th rounder
Jeff Crowell-Portland State
Tyler Fredrickson-Cal

...and while I applaud the effort to enjoin competition at the position, who, exactly, is going to take the time to coach & work with these kids....or for that matter, honestly evaluate their ability.

Then Sauerbrun to boot??...pun intended...for a mil & a half...get a grip

Keep signin' em coach...at this rate we'll have more feet for hire than the Boston Marathon

He's going to be cut in June anyway. Why waste a pick and the money?

This is getting rediculous.

We allready have the highest paid kicker in the NFL, who doesn't even kick off!

Hindsight is great...but look at the timeline of how they got to this point.

- The Broncos were not happy with the punting last year (Duh!)...so they axe them

- They quickly go out and sign a couple of street guys to compete for the position. Cool

- They then have the opportunity to draft a late round guy that they like. Cool

- Now they see a chance for a major upgrade with Todd. Fine

If these events would have happened in reverse...it wouldn't have played out this way.

I love the fact that Denver is trying to get better day-by-day and aren't stopping just becuase a roster spot looks filled...even if it means that you have a glut at the position through training camp.

They can hire Mike Horan to come in and work with them for a couple of months...

I guess I just don't see any of this as a bad thing....and I think it is asking a lot of the Broncos to have ESP enough to know that a guy they want to draft will be there....or that they have an opportunity to sign Todd....and therefore didn't need to sign the earlier guys.

My only worry is that with the drunken driving incident and the steroid "issue", he may be looking at a four game suspension at a minimum (with a full season suspension only another drink or two away). The guy is clearly one of the best in the league, and should only get better in the mile high air, but I'd hate to see us fork out serious dough on a guy that has a real chance at being suspended. I'm torn on this one.

Pretty clear to me. 1.56 million for a punter who says he can't quit eating, is facing a steroid investigation, is going to court on drunken driving and reckless driving charges and told the team to basically go **** themselves.
What a stellar addition he would make for the Broncos!!!!

Wabbit, what is your take on the Broncos interest in Sauerbrun? Will they give Ernster a legitimate shot?

The Broncos would only take him if he renegotiated the salary. No way would they pay him 1.5, so that's not an issue. Reggie Roby was one doughnut away from 300 pounds and he was the best in the game, so a punter's weight isn't an issue for me. Just means more leg to get into the ball.

Well if he didn't get his back broken I think he would be kicking off. Do you really want to lose our kicker to another cheap shot? I don't. I would rather have Elam making field goals which is what he is paid to do then get paid while on IR.
