Default off season pick-ups are going to mean squat unless...

the Broncos find some quality in the secondary.. (isn't that right Peyton Manning), with that being said the donkeys need to find a way to trade down in the draft and go after a CB (Carlos Rogers or Antrel Rolle) in the 1st round or else I see another 10-6 season and an early exit from the playoffs once again..

Bailey, Walls and Middlebrooks is not a horrible cb situation. Sorry if you think so. The problem is not the secondary. There is no one other then pryce that can rush the passer.

Maybe not a bad idea. If Walls gets hurt again I can't really stand the possibility that Middlebrooks and Alexander will be 2 of our corners in nickel. Fabian Washington would be a great pick at 25.

Patriots had dick in their secondary in the postseason. But they had a passrush, which could cover up suspect coverage by average corners...

Sir go back and watch the last years playoff losses and then tell me who is to blame---- easy answer the secondary and poor coaching decisions.

Play2win... sorry you think this thread is worthless play2win, but your name is exactly what the Broncos are not doing and your post is what makes this thread worthless..

Atwater--I like Lenny a lot, but he will never play a full 16 game season.. same goes for Middlebrooks... they are both fragile as easter eggs.. also Wille may be facing a 4 game suspension for the domestic violence charge last year

in 2003...walls played every game. Last season, Middlebrooks almost unseated Herndon at RCB, and would have, if he did'nt go back on IR. Its not the secondary...its the PASSRUSH

There going to have to bring someone in at CB, I would think. This F'n Pryce contract has been hanging over our heads too long. It's time too make a move. I just hope the Broncos haven't lost what leverage we might have in a trade.

I believe it is a combination of both the secondary and the pass rush, my point is Denver has depth on the d-line, but none in the secondary..

If I remember correctly in 2003 Lenny played a lot of nickel back and he wasn't on the field as much as when he starts-- less opportunity for injury, starting CB he will not play a full 16 game season.. they need depth at CB and not just ok depth they are going to need playmakers in the nickel and dime position.

Need playmakers on the defensive line. Again, patriots had hank poteat starting at cb for them, hank poteat. why did they win with him playing? because they got pressure on the QB. denver won superbowls because they had a great pass rush in williams, tanuvasa, smith and pryce.

Sir read Larry Coyers Q & A comments on the pass rush.. the Superbowl yrs the Broncos didn't have speedy LB's and they had ok quickness on the d-line,

They had decent ballers in the nickel and dime (ie.. Darrien Gordon)

They are banking on a good pass rush from the LB's.. they need CB help immediately or else it will be same story for 3yrs in a row.. Broncos secondary meet your daddy.. Peyton Manning

...dude...PASSRUSH...when denver beat indi in 2003, Broncos got to manning 4 times. Forced him to throw bad balls, hurried him, made his game horrible. In the two losses, Broncos sacked him once, and that was by dumb luck. The could not get to manning, and he picked apart our coverage scheme, because he had the time to do it.

Didnt Lenny start in 03. I remember he did. It all comes to pass rush. I think we do need more depth in the secondary, but the dline is more of a concern than the secondary.

Carolina Panthers have an awesome, awesome passrush, but their secondary is just average, yet when Carolina made a superbowl run, they did so because the passrush created turnovers, and ricky manning got the hot hand. Passrush leads to takeaways, which leads to playoff wins.

If you had been around here for any time whatsoever, you would have know there are threads that some people will post, "This thread is useless/pointless without pictures"

That was just a joke, sorry if it went over your head.

BTW-I think it would just silly to use our first pick to draft a CB. We don't draft CBs well. We have young, very adaquate talent at the CB position. Walls is going to be just fine. The only thing we need to do is STAY HEALTHY. Rich Tuten needs to get on the ball with these guys. If we were halfway healthy either of the last two years, we have a decent chance of coming off on top. With Kennedy gone, our coverages will get better, he was a liability. With the new enforcement of the rules in the NFL, the value of the CB has dropped somewhat. You need good, if not, very good, players at the position, but the top-flight CBs are de-valued. Atleast for the time being. We have Champ and Walls, and then a very good stable of young, fast and talented defensive backs. If anything in the secondary, we need a good cover SAFETY, but we might already have that in Lasuer.

WE NEED PASH RUSH. Especially against teams like the DOLTS. Here's a new flash for ya- PAY-ME-A-TON can get rattled. And once he does he makes mistakes. What is most important, right now, is a serious pash rush, because the Receivers can get away with so much **** downfield. So, you just don't give the QB the time to get it to the receivers.

As a matter of fact I think our coverages are going to be looking about as good as it gets, with our base secondary and Linebacker core. We have fast LBs that can cover, we have fast, big CBs and have a bunch of athletic and fast nickle and dime backs. This gives us an unbelievable amount of freedom and creativity in our defensive schemes and coverages. All we really need is a good cover safety.

Now we just need a dynamic D-Line. If the Linebackers and Secondary are the backbone of the defense, then we have a very, very strong backbone, and we just need to put some serious muscle on up front. We need a line that is big and strong, and can attack the QB. We also need a strong rotation, so we can keep fresh legs in there later in the game, and later in the season.

There are a few ways you can go about building a team. You can build the muscle on the lines and then go from there, like Jacksonville and Coach Jack Del Rio did/is doing. But I like what Shanahan has done. He Solidified the LBs and Secondary, not only starters, but we have pretty awesome depth, too. Now, as far as the defense goes, all he has to do is Work on the D-Line. All other areas are taken care of. Of course, if we have a chance to get an all-pro, we need to jump on it. But as far as organizational direction and focus, its pretty simple GET THAT D-LINE AS STRONG AND DOMINANT AS WE POSSIBLY CAN!!!!

So, for all these beforementioned reasons, I can truthfully say that drafting a CB in the first part of the draft is the LAST thing we need to do. I think we should draft a LB before we draft a CB, thats how bad of an idea it would be to draft a CB early in the draft. Just dont do it!!!!

I watched the Game , 2 things stand out at me why we lost that game , Lack of ball control and lack of pass rush ..... you can only leave a Defense on the field so long beofre they crack .......

agreed the offense had no ball control.. but Denvers defense was toast in the first 8 mins of the game and IMO you could have put anybody in the league on the front four that day and it would have been the same result.

My mistake, just figured it was just like every other message board as ones post count seems to discredit what they are saying. Thought you were just taking a jab at the "newbie"

sorry mate didn't know it was a requirement of this board to make friends, from my weekly marital counseling I think I'm suppose to say "Ok I suppose I should work on that, I'll do better dear".. this is a message board not a marriage

Walls started all 16 games in 2003, he and Herdon were the starters. Not only that i think Walls lead the league (or was very close) in passes defended, so saying he can't play a full 16 games is moronic. Middlebrooks on the other hand has yet to play a full season, but he did make some good strides last year, and if healthy should be an above average nickleback. Personally I would love to move up (via pryce) to get a shot at Rolle though. I think he could push fergy for the FS spot (asuming we move Lynch back to SS) and contribute right away as the dimeback.

As for our playoff loss to the colts its pretty easy to figure out. With as much time as Manning had in the pocket my fiance could have completed 50% of her throws. PASS RUSH! The other reason we lost wears #45.

I definately think Walls has the potential to be better than average, but I just don't see him playing a full season w/ that banged up shoulder, that never fully heals and it is very suseptible to popping out at any time

Agreed.. but lets not be too hard on Roc, the coaches didn't exactly put him in the best position either...he should have had some help from the safetys

We had no push at all , , Pryce was dropping in and out .... The Colts oline isnt that good, our front 7 was that bad .... But to put the blame on the secondary , isnt addressing the problem , our blitzing didnt work either ..... If you give any reciever ,and QB more then 4 seconds , your toast , i dont care who you have in the secondary ...
