I was in NZ last fall and there was a 7.7 about 200km off the coast. It shook the hell out of everything, and scared the hell out of me. but I think these things are pretty common.

They're saying it lasted over 5 minutes. Tsunami Warnings have been issued for over 1500 miles of coastlines.

Big Earthquake Hits Off Indonesia Island

BANGKOK, Thailand - A large earthquake struck off Indonesia's Sumatra Island in the Andaman Sea late Monday, and the U.S. Geological Survey (news - web sites) said it was a major quake measuring a magnitude of 8.2.

Thai officials issued a warning of a possible tsunami, three months after a tsunami devastated parts of Indonesia and other countries in the region. The quake occurred at 11:09 p.m. local at a depth of nearly 19 miles, the USGS (news - web sites) in Golden, Colo., said.

Japan's Meteorological Agency measured the quake at magnitude 8.5.

The magnitude-9 undersea earthquake, the world's biggest in 40 years, and the huge tsunami it sent charging across the Indian Ocean at the speed of a passenger jet killed more than 174,000 people and left another 106,000 missing.

More than 1.5 million people were left homeless in 11 countries.

any idea how big the previous earthquake was that caused that tsunami.

Like Spider said if there is a tsunami the effects shouldn't be as bad because the previous one whipped everything out.

And I thought insurance rates are high here.

*****

The previous one was 9.0 apparently.

Edited to reflect the latest estimate. This would be the 7th biggest earthquake in modern history folks... and its considered an "aftershock"

If an 8.7 hit here in SoCal, the devastation would be unimaginable. That size quake is bigger than any that have ever hit this area by far.

Maynard was the first thing that came to mind as I read Pez's comparison to the devastation that an 8.7 earthquake would cause SoCal.
