Thats totally Awesome. The Broncos have 4 first day picks . I still think the Bronco could trade down in the first and draft Ware or Turk and pickup some more picks.

the first day should be used to draft 2 DL, a TE/WR/QB(hint hint), and a Safety.

Humm

Am I the only one suspicious over the "extra" 3rd we got? Seems to me a 3rd for a pro bowler who led the NFC in sacks is reasonable. But another 3rd for Gold and Burns, both now back with the Broncos?

Could it be that the NFL felt guilty about having forfeited the Broncos regular 3rd for some minor technicality in order to placate Al Davis? And that they made up for it now using Gold and Burns as justification?

Sure would have loved to have seen/heard Davis' reaction when the compensation list was announced.

Possibly, but each offseason is independent of every other. What Denver's done this season with regards to Gold and Burns is irrelevant to what happened last offseason.

i expected a single 3rd or 4th not two. Although the fact that Gold is back is irrelevant to the analysis, its a backward looking analysis. If Gold is deemed a free agent under these rules, which Herc has said is unlikely because he was cut as opposed to being a real FA, than that would be a factor in next year's compensatory calculation.

To my knowledge Keith is still a FA and has yet to sign anywhere.

you think that we could maybe get a good comp pick for next year? we lost hayward, kennedy, and possibly herndon. that's 3 starters. i know its based on next year, but we could get good picks next year too, right?

I certainly hope so. I have no knowledge of the formula used to compute these picks but on the surface it seems that we have lost more this year than we did last year, when compared with FA acquisitions but we will have to see what the key personnel we lost this year do for their new teams next year in terms of production.

There is no formula, it's based on politicking. That's why Shanny and Sundquist as well as Bowlen went to Hawaii a day early when they should have been taking turns blowing Douglas according to the insider Heav07.

We won't get anything from the hawks. But next year we might get something depending on how much he signed for per year. I guess when two players went and played for $5.5+ Mil. and we got 2 3rd rounders.

Well if those three play lights out football then we get better picks. Isn't it base on talent lost vs talent gained. I was pretty sure thats how it went. Hayward is in pretty good shape. KK could do better but I think he will do about the same as he always does. Herndon is the question mark here. All and all I say we will get some good comp picks next year as well.

The two 3rd rounders really just turned our draft around. I'm hoping we go DL in round 1, Best Available in Round 2, punter in round 3A and grab a guy who's slid way down and almost out of the first day with 3B, such as Marlon Jackson (who may slide badly), Vince Jackson, McPherson, etc..

It has to do with the average $$$ per year in the deal they signed and play is factored in a little bit. Denver really lucked out on Gold since the NFL weighed his entire contract, and not the 1 year deal everyone knew that it was going to be in reality.

Thats crazy. I thought I read somewhere about talent lost vs talent brought back in. Sometimes its great to have teams overpay for your players.

It is weighed against who the team brings back in, but if they player signed was cut, he isn't factored into the equation. Lynch went to the Pro Bowl, but since the Bucs cut him, he wasn't weighed against Berry and Gold.

This year Gold was cut, so he won't be compared to anyone else next year either.

Yeah is saw that. Which makes sence. I wonder if they kind of thought that would happen and thats why they traded the 4th rounder. Also knowing what they know now I wonder if they will use a mid round pick next year as trade bait.

The use of contracts as the deciding factor should help us with compensation from Hayward, Kennedy, and Herndon (if he counts) since all three signed rather lucrative deals for their positions.

One very askewed way to look at the Gold signing is that by signing him instead of a FA LB, we will get a third round pick in 2006.

Maybe "The plan" is to sign only players cut for Salary cap reasons, and get our compensation next year on the losses of Hayward, Spragen and Kennedy (Herndon does not count because he was undrafted I believe).

A couple things...

I'm no expert but these picks are rewarded based on unrestricted free agents. So we won't recieve anything next year for losing Herndon. Also I think Lynch wasn't involved this year because he was available after June 1st. Since Gold was available durring the regular free agent period, he will count against our comps next year.

However these two 3rd rounders are great news this year!! God, I hope Dustin Colquitt (punter Tennessee) is there for us!!!

At this moment in time they'd be as follows:

Hayward 4th, Herndon 5th, Kennedy 5th, Spragan 7th.
