Baseball hearings, NCAA Tourney kicking off, and then Shaq vs. Kobe in prime time.
It will be glorious. |

The first (real) day of the NCAA tourney (I don't consider the play-in game as the start of the NCAA tourney) AND St. Patrick's Day...excellent...

Depends on what you like to watch I guess. I just read an article on the mens teams in the tourney this year and less than 43% will graduate and 3 teams will have no one graduate. Unbelievable! |

I noticed this thread and felt an undeniable urge to criticize the horrid use of english.
"TV is going to absolutely own tomorrow!" TV is an inanimate object and therefore cannot own anything. How can TV affirm its ability to own anything to the level of certainty expressed in "absolutely"? Anyway, it could get worse, but I'll cut you some slack for the shorthand. |

My puppy is having his nads cut off, so I don't have to walk him at lunch, and my ankle/plantar feel up to the starimaster. Life will be good. Not for Henry, but ....

You are (1) extracting "own" and "absolutely" from their context, (2) changing their intended definitions to the basic 1804 Noah Webster #1 definitions, and (3) then you go and try to plug your meanings for the words into your own informal logic rant. "own" is an emerging word root for a group of words that indicate striking or humorous dominance or excellence, not actual ownership. "Absolutely" is useful hyperbole in 95% of the cases as are most absolute statements. We abuse absolutes and superlatives constantly. Personification is another literary device that Rhymesayer so brilliantly employs. He personifies "TV" -- which isn't that big of a stretch literally or figuratively. We all know TV is living being (except Symphonic products) and it pwns us as a culture, especially when he/she shows us good sports coverage all day. I feel very comfortable literally personifying "TV" As your common PHIL101 would declare...an absolute statement is pretty elusive. I would agree that language is indeed dynamic and most effective when it bends a little, but I cannot find a good reason that the statements at hand is a good example of effective or creative communication. |

i was just messin with ya.... i liked the critique.... and critiquer-appreciaters like to critique for fun. it just comes down to a matter of taste... i could be younger, more observant hax0r/black culture, and therefore more likely to defend the use of the language. this was a nice post of yours, in itself. no beef, in fact i think daffodils just sprouted! |

Our language is always changing, not always for the better. The Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary recently added 10,000 new words and more than 100,000 new meanings and revisions.
http://www.merriam-webstercollegiate.../new_words.htmMy favorites: bogart - to use or consume without sharingIn the near future, maybe flavor clown will make the cut. Last edited by clean; 03-20-2005 at 07:17 PM.. |
