I nominate this as the most informative, educated post of the thread.

As I understand it messes up your engine pretty easy. I think it weakens the metal inside and such since it burns at higher temperature. That doesn't mean the engines can't or should be upgraded, but with the engines that we currently have. They would need to start pumping out engines today that can handle that increase temperature and then make the switch...not make the switch and everybody's engine goes bad. If that happens you might want to buy some stock in an engine manufacturer.

In Iowa, if I remember right, they sell 93 octane 85% ethanol gas for the same price as 87 octane regular gas. Why they don't carry 87 ethanol, I don't know but most people still use the 87. Maybe it just hasn't caught on yet but it would seem to me that if people were buying it, it wouldn't be the same price. I ran it in my '03 F150 and maybe got a slight improvement in mileage.

Ah, Laramie. Sometimes I'd forget what bar I'd parked my 65 Impala, and I'd ride my bike for a week until I happened upon the beast. Big knobby for the mtn bike in Winter! Riding home drunk on the ice in the dark with 25-30mph wind, an adventure.

$2.17 here in Western NY....it rises 2 cents everyday. Driving 80 miles round trip to work and back doesn't help matters any.

Oh I know the drill..... "Yeah but , when adjusted to inflation...blah, blah, blah......we're still paying less than we did in 1980 and are still paying less than the rest of the world...blah, blah, blah....if the Dems had voted for W's energy bill....blah, blah, blah"

No rationalization can sugarcoat it....the big gouge is well on it's way again....bend over

Oh brother. Let this farm boy explain it.

First, corn has alot of calorie in the corn itself, but it doesn't come cheap either. Alot of petrochemicals and energy are used to produce corn itself. Put in the whole context, it's pretty inefficient. Diesel, fertilizer made from oil, manufacturing equipment, movement and transport are all in themselves factors in production cost.

The reason alcohol isn't that great on engines is it is a lower octane, burns a little hotter, but mainly, it doesn't have the lubrication properties of gasoline.

Alcohol would be better suited for a turbine styled motor, or even rotary. It would also work well for heating, altho Natural Gas is still cheaper actually.

There is no infrastructure really, other than to blend it into gasoline. I drive on it all the time, it's about 2 cents cheaper than straight gas and never have a problem. When you add HEET to your gas tank, it's basically alcohol and used to get water out, but a problem of alcohol is that it can create consensation in fuel lines. It eliminates it but can also cause problems, if that makes any sense.

The only reason ethanol works is because corn is so incredibly cheap. In the old days, corn cobs were burned. Today, the cobs are chewed up by combines instead of "picked" and allowed to dry on the cob, now expensive gas dryers bring the corn down to a moisture level that can be stored. Corn Cobs are a pretty good heating source, but they are extremely bulky and light. Corn Kernels are heavy. If not properly stored, the farmer can find his bin a giant fermenter that would make Jack Daniels proud. Corn brings mice, and man is Beezlebub a mouser!

Farming now is totally different than even when I grew up. Tractors and Semis and Combines, rent and fuels require arount half a million of operating capital per year.

As far as making ethanol, anything with sugar can be used. Hemp would make an excellent source because it will grow anywhere. It's sugar content isn't high, but you could grow tons of it in harsh climates without fertilizer, it doesn't wear down the soil or get it "stoned", and the excess is basically fiber which dried, can be used as a construction matererial. Hemp has been used for centuries.

Go Green, Go Hemp!

This is why the romantic idea of the family farm is dead. How are you going to pay for that with 160 acres of wheat?

It would make a huge difference if people got rid of their pickups and SUVs. Of course we know this isn't going to happen so the demand and high prices will be there from now until an alternative fuel becomes efficient.

1970's oil prices spiked, caused shortages, forcing auto makers to improve fuel efficency. Same thing is happening now. Witht he oil industry, you have to shock the market, then improvements come.

.
The economy must be improving there. It was .03 a gallon when I was there!! Good for the Iraqis.

I know in Kuwait it was about .74 a gallon. All the gas money goes straight to the Kuwaiti government. They own all the gas stations ect...

This is about supply and demand. This isn't the oil companies. OPEC is basically at maximum output. There are many countries around the world that are modernizing and are in high demand for gas. China and India are the biggest ones. Get used to the high prices they aren't going away. I recomend that everyone ditch their gas guzzleling trucks because it's not going to get any better. My Dodge gets 14 MPG. It's paid for so I'm going to trade it this spring.

The Ethanol lobby is a powerful lobby too. I'm suprised they aren't making more of a push to get ethanol production up across the US. The IRL is switching to ethanol as its fuel for 2006, so that will give it a little more exposure.

There has to be some major drawbacks with ethanol because it sounds like a nice source of fuel for cars... I know the oil lobby is powerful in DC, but so is the ethanol lobby...

This site is down right now, but when it comes backup - here's a good story:

http://www.mises.org/fullstory.aspx?Id=1717
The Myth of "Peak Oil" by Charles Featherstone [Posted January 12, 2005] I am often asked about the "peak oil" theory. I've even had some people send me junk mail predicting when the date would come. Sometime in June, 2006, I recall. (Unsolicited investment advice: go very long!) I didn't really pay attention. And yet many do. There are websites, books, email lists, conferences, and tracts of every sort promoting this doomsday theory (here is a google of the subject, and, yes, the domain name peakoil.com is taken). In millennialist language, these people say that the human race is on the verge of a massive turning point because oil is nearly depleted. You can fill in the rest.

I don't think many analysts believe oil is "nearly depleted" but there are quite a few questions about reaching peak output which many are speculating we have reached..

When I had a horse I thought about riding him down to the local 7-eleven. It's about a mile from my house. Only problem was his former owner abused him and his health was pretty bad. You may remember seeing picks of him Spider. His name was Elway. Poor bastard was 35 years old and coughed like a son of a gun. Would have been fun cruising down the sidewalks with him though.

Apparently it still is legal to ride horses on sidewalks in Aurora. Or so I was told. I think I'm going to test the law this summer.
