Dave, it's the bonus. And, the fact that I don't see how he's the best lb in the class. And, ferguson actually signed for LESS. And our linebackers werent' the unit that kept us from going bowling last year. And, back when gold was making all those plays, he had Washington and berry in front of him, both of whom were stouter than Heyward, who was stouter than Okeafer ... even if we sign him.
At best, it's taking the best defensive impact player, next to champ, and moving him. We played Lynch out of position last year. It's a trend. It's not finding tweeners to fit a system, it's plugging in square pegs in round holes. Gold's a nice fit for a nickle or a 3-4 on passing downs. But, if he's the centerpiece of free agency, we're sol. The pass coverage was solid last year, until middlebrooks went down. We didn't add pass coverage, and we actually lost a corner in a year where db is the deepest position in FA. Riddle me how that makes sense. It doesnt. If you think itw somehow wrong to be pissed, kiss my ass. But, having eaten and drank a glass of wine, I realize I don't understand how a two tier bonus is calculated for cap. I think it basically backloads it, and that thought makes me unhappy too. |

Nothing is out there yet to confirm they did give Gold the $8-10 million bonus. So I guess I'll chill out till we actully see the numbers.

Golden Moment
Broncos Reunite With Ian Gold After One Year Apart By Andrew Mason DenverBroncos.com ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- It didn't take Ian Gold long to return to the Broncos. One year after departing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers via unrestricted free agency, Gold came back to the Broncos Thursday, officially signing a contract just two days after the Buccaneers released him in order to free up space under their salary cap. A year ago, Gold hit the market following his second season as the Broncos' starting weakside linebacker. But he did so having just completed recovery and rehabilitation from the torn anterior cruciate ligament he incurred during an October 2003 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, in the final game of what turned out to be his first Broncos tenure. Gold started 22 games in his last two seasons with the Broncos after first earning acclaim as a special-teamer. He played in the Pro Bowl of February 2002 as the AFC's special-team selection for its All-Star Squad after notching 18 special-teams tackles and recovering two fumbles during the 2001 campaign. In the two years that followed, Gold amassed 169 tackles and assisted on 41 more, giving him an average of 9.5 total tackles per game. All the while, he continued playing on special teams; in fact, he suffered the painful torn ACL while covering a punt. When Gold returned to the field in pewter and red last year, he did so at a different spot, playing strongside linebacker in the Bucs' 4-3 scheme. He amassed 120 total tackles -- 70 unassisted with 20 assists -- and intercepted one pass while breaking up two more passes. Gold was also active away from the field in Denver, earning the team's nomination for the 2003 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award. Gold was particularly involved working with children at the Denver Broncos Boys & Girls Club, which opened in 2003. When the University of Michigan product was on the market last year, he had a dialogue with the Broncos as late as the first day of last year's draft. That did not pan out into a contract and he signed with the Buccaneers a few days later. But when Gold and the Bucs faced the Broncos five and a half months later, he carried no ill will. "I really don’t hold any grudges or anything like that," Gold told Buccaneers.com in October. And now, he's back in the familiar orange and blue. http://www.denverbroncos.com/page.ph...4&storyID=3953 |

When Gold and Mobley got injured, I didnt see a drop off in the LB play at all and to a degree I thought they were much more consistent and solid with Donnie and Ian instead of the overrated speed backers.
Damn I would rather have Sykes at SLB then Gold. |

that article doesnt say much about salary or position although it sort of hints at position. I will wait till i here something more definitive about the position and salary. If its SS or something and a 4 million bonus i will come to peace with the development.

. I'll wait to see on the bonus, but stuff here's been pretty reliable. Still, its' just curious. They say "3-4" which I suspected was bogus, but there are guys out there cheaper than 10mil who can fit in that scheme at DE - douglas of the ravens I'd think. If Gold came cheap, no issue. But he isn't in the top 5 of linebackers in a weak FA class. |

He would have made the D more exciting to watch. I think hes more of a playmaker than Donnie and Sykes. A lot of overreacting going on here. Just looked outside and the sky is falling. ****! The only thing that can piss me off is if Gold gets a big payday. From what I read he is negotiating this deal himself so Shanny does'nt have to deal with the piss ons. I'm pretty curious to see what kind of posts there would be if there was a headline, "Gold To Move To Free Safety". This place would ****ing fall apart. I've never seen such an outrage over one player since SOB. |

I don't understand the "happy valley" attitude. As for the cap, we know Heyward got 12? mil, or was it 10? He was the best speed rusher not franchished. (does that say anything bout shanny?) Okeafer and then Fisher are the next two, according to the sites I've seen.
Den was 3.9 under before we paid Fat Ass 1.4 and resigned Hamilton and picked up Hunt, and gold. We still have to resign Neil. That's gonna put us in negative territory. What we'll have is what Trevor frees up, less what we're over. 4 mil? So, calculate what Hayward's cap hit is to dullass, and figure Okeafer or Fisher will be at best a mil under that. It's ok, but Pryce and Okeafer OR some journeyman like Wiley and Okeafer and Fat Ass and Spragan would have given us a better shot at bowling. ****, I missed my afternoon workout over this, and I got to work tomorrow. I'm off to shower and go to bed. fick it. |

I have no problem with bringing gold back.... if it wouldnt restrict other signings. I'm pissed we let Heyward go.... Pryce and Kennedy probabally wont be back either. To me, thats more pressing than Gold.
Maybe they want him to play safety. |

The only thing that would be more laughable than the suggestions around here that Gold could play safety would be if the Broncos actually attempted to convert him at this late date. You don't move further away from the football as you get older, it works the opposite way. |

No one is saying that DJ can't play the strong side. What we are saying is that it's a waste of his talent. He's got the best weak side pursuit I've seen on this team in years. |

I believe you will come to peace with the development soon, Socal. No way they are going to put DJ in a spot where he is less effective and there is no way the are giving Gold the kind of money that has been thrown out here. There may be a bunch of funny money involved, but no way he got more than they are offering Kennedy. |
