March 4, 2005) -- Well, the first week of free agency has been hectic, to say the least, and there are always a couple of clues in the first wave of signings that will help shed some light on the next few months around the NFL.
NFL Network 1. The linebacker market was attacked quickly. Dallas barely had Dexter Coakley released and he was signed by St. Louis; Ian Gold was brought back to Denver for big bucks; Chris Claiborne left the Vikings and is now a Ram; Antonio Pierce knew a good deal when he saw one and jumped on the Giants' offer; Morlon Greenwood is now a Texan, even though indications were that the Dolphins wanted him back but not at the price Houston paid. The first reaction I have to the large amount of linebackers signed right away is that the draft may not be very strong for linebackers this year. The next reaction is with Ed Hartwell, Kendrell Bell, Tommy Polley and Rob Morris, among others, still available for the plucking, the market may start to soften by late next week. That means not all of these fine players are going to make what they thought they would after testing the waters in the open market. 2. Signings usually give us a hint as to where a club is headed. The 49ers signed Buffalo offensive tackle Jonas Jennings, arguably the only quality left tackle in free agency. Jennings is only 6-foot-3 and has 34-inch arms, which makes him one of the smallest left tackles in the league. The Bills passed on paying him, so the trade of RB Travis Henry for Arizona OT L.J. Shelton looks like it went from a possibility to a probability. The re-signing of Colts running back Dominic Rhodes for close to $5 million over the next two years looks like Indianapolis would consider a trade of Edgerrin James if the right deal came along. Even though the Cowboys have been the most aggressive team so far with the signings of Drew Bledsoe, Jason Ferguson, Marco Rivera and Anthony Henry, they have not done enough yet to convert that 4-3 defense into a 3-4. The dismissal of Coakley is a sign that it is under consideration, but more personnel changes have to occur. Tennessee's loss of DE Kevin Carter will be another team's huge free-agency gain. 3. The Tennessee Titans and the Green Bay Packers are in a world of hurt when it comes to keeping their talent pool intact. They can't hope to improve in the offseason and now can only work to get back to the level they finished the 2004 season. The Titans dumped Kevin Carter and Derrick Mason, among others. The Packers have let three starting offensive linemen go and have already seen two sign with other teams. With the Packers so close to the salary-cap limit, I have been told the next target is restricted free-agent running back Najeh Davenport. The compensation to sign him is only a fourth-round selection, and it will not be hard to come up with a front-loaded contract that makes it difficult for Green Bay to match. Simultaneously, the Packers have to deal with the possibility a team puts an offer to TE Bubba Franks on the table that they can't match and they lose him for no compensation. 4. There are a few very good players that need to get solid offers within the next 10 days or the market may start to turn in the other direction. Redskins CB Fred Smoot and Steelers WR Plaxico Burress are just two guys who expect to hit a big payday and need to see a solid offer ASAP. 5. The quarterback market hasn't moved yet for two reasons. There is no clear-cut guaranteed starter in the group. Free agency rarely, if ever, produced a franchise-type signal-caller. So the list of Kurt Warner, Jay Fiedler, Jeff Garcia, Brad Johnson and a few others is more about slotting them into one of two groups. Group 1 is "the club is willing to let the guy come in and compete for the starting job." Group 2 is "the club is only willing to buy him as a backup insurance policy." The difference in price between player and team can be close to $1 million, and every member of this list still has to jockey for position on the new squad. Most feel Warner will be the one to set the market, and as soon as he does, the rest will fall in place very quickly. Finally, this is an ever-changing landscape for every position, and with each signing, the ripple effect throughout the league can be felt. Some of the top available talent at some positions just came free due to the signing of another player. Look for the free-agent list to grow in numbers, but not in talent, as we head into Week 2 of the free-agency period. Wonder what his asking price is? |

What I am finding interesting is that besides for the initial burst at the opening of FA, the top CB's have had relatively few bites. Rolle, Smoot, Surtain all are still available and there have been few if any suiters. Whereas the second tier guys have been getting all the attention.

Jeff Garcia is meeting with the Broncos for a second time.
It appears Garcia will sign on to be Jake Plummer's backup. While it squashes any short-term value, Garcia would be very interesting in Denver if he ever got on the field due to injury or a Jake Plummer meltdown. Mar. 7 - 12:26 pm et Source: Denver Post Cooper Carlisle - T - Broncos Broncos guard Cooper Carlisle will meet with the Falcons today. Since they run a similar offense, the move from Denver to Atlanta makes sense. Mar. 7 - 12:14 pm et Source: Rocky Mountain News Kenoy Kennedy - DB - Broncos Kennoy Kennedy, currently in Detroit, will visit Miami, then Atlanta this week. That's assuming the best free agent safety out there doesn't sign before leaving Detroit. Denver's defense is taking some serious hits. Mar. 7 - 12:12 pm et Source: Rocky Mountain News Kelly Herndon - DB - Broncos Broncos cornerback Kelly Herndon is in negotiations with the Baltimore Ravens. The restricted free agent is expected to sign an offer sheet with either Baltimore or Atlanta, where he may visit Tuesday. Last year, only one NFL player changed teams in restricted free agency. This year, the Broncos may lose two, Herndon and tight end Jeb Putzier. Mar. 7 - 12:09 pm et Former Rams DE Bryce Fisher will visit the Seahawks this week. Fisher could re-team with Grant Wistrom in St. Louis if Chike Okeafor decides to sign elsewhere. Mar. 7 - 12:36 pm et Source: Seattle Post-Intelligencer Dolphins signed DE Kevin Carter to a five-year, $30 million contract, with $8 million guaranteed. He'll make $10 million over the first two years of the contract, $16 million over the first three. While the Dolphins are overpaying, they get a solid veteran presence who will do a good job with the thankless task of being a 3-4 defensive end. Carter is unlikely to post double-digit sack totals again. |

Damn, Carlisle. He cannot play tackle, that's proven, but I was interested to see what he could do with Neil's spot. I figured they'd keep Cooper and bring Neil back at a reduced price as an insurance policy.

Well, it is in Denver, which can't front load a contract, do we even have a 4th? Is Dookie toilet trained yet? Still, if we lose Droughns, he would be worth a 4th. I'm not nor ever have been sold on MA as a Fullback. He can't hit the hole quick enough, he's a bit too tall, and he isn't much of a reciever whatsoever. Never mind, we will probably let Droughns go and keep Mr. Groin. This "Plan" is looking more and more like Napoleon at Waterloo. Last edited by watermock; 03-07-2005 at 02:31 PM.. |

Haven't seen it confirmed anywhere, but Adam was just on the NFL Network and said:
"Denver, Seattle and Arizona were all after Okeafor, but in the end the Cards ended up with him". Last edited by Garcia Bronco; 03-07-2005 at 04:49 PM.. |

Who's next on our list? Bryce Fisher? Derrick Burgess? If we don't sign someone soon, I'll be joining in on the hysteria that's been going around.

Speaking of hysteria, I wonder how long it will take "the King of Hysteria" rascal to let us know how he feels about all this.

Well Adam has been off with his info this year so far.
I hope he's wrong with this also. But the Cards may have thrown more money and they have a decent line that could allow Okeafor the get one on one blocking. Next on the list would be Byrce Fisher, Burgess is smallish for a 3-4 DE. 6-2 266. Plus he has had injuries. Jerry Deloach may still be an option along with Hovan. But like I have said it's pointless when the cap dollars aren't their. For Christ sakes cut Trevor. Sign a guard and DE and let's get working on the draft! |

I'm not sure Okeafor or Fisher are any better than Palopeo(sp) Or Ellis Johnson. Really I don't think Denver is missing much. I think they should resign what they got if it's cheap and resonable. Go into the draft with Pryce and look for the best deal.
