Wow. That's a shocker.
About the best thing that ever came out of Nebraska. Staying up late to watch the Tonight Show was like a rite of passage. |

Carson will always be the gold standard that all late night talk show hosts will be measured up to.
Rest in peace Johnny. My Phi Gam brother. |

I know a man who gave up smoking, drinking, sex, and rich food. He was healthy right up to the day he killed himself.

Why should anyone be sad that Carson died? The man lived to be 79 years old and had a great life. We should all be so lucky. I don't think his dying makes this a sad day. If you were a Carson fan than his life should be celebrated not mourned. If you want to be sad click on the news and see how many soldiers have been killed in Iraq this last week. Those are the people I feel sad about.

He was an innovator. He was also savvy enough - and secure enough - to let other people come on his show and be funny. He was a tremendous straight man. He was also funny as hell on nights when the monologue would bomb. Either on an off night or if the jokes simply went over the collective heads of the busload of rubes from Oklahoma comprising that day's audience. I don't think anybody was ever funnier after a punchline fell flat. He made self deprecation an art form.
These tributes are funny things, though. People were basically giving Johnny credit for giving every comedian on earth their break, including legends like Pryor, Carlin and Robin Williams. How silly. Those guys were going to be stars no matter what happened. I am willing to give Carson the lion's share of the blame for inflicting the grotesquely untalented David Brenner upon us. Also for making Joan Rivers a much bigger deal than she ever should have been. Carson's departure was very instructive. He was a television institution for decades and he generated millions in revenue for NBC, but when he wanted to handpick David Letterman as his successor, NBC wouldn't listen to a word he had to say. They just gave him the television equivalent of a gold watch and sent him off to Malibu. |

And it should've been Letterman. Hands down the best late night show since Carson called it a career. |
