Sunspot flares thrice A STAFF REPORTER Calcutta, Jan. 16: The predicted solar flares over sunspot 720 did occur late yesterday. The sunspot group, which is as big as Jupiter, produced three major flares, which can have a lasting impact on earth. Of the three, two were M-class or medium-sized flares, capable of causing brief radio blackouts in the polar regions. One was an X-class flare, big in size and capable of causing radio blackouts across the earth and long-lasting radiation storms. One of the M-class flares, labelled M8, lasted the longest, resulting in intense radio emissions and radio sweeps, with rising energetic protons. Satellite pictures have revealed a fast full-halo coronal mass ejection. The sunspot, first sighted from the earth on Friday, is nearly seven times the size of our planet. It is a rare phenomenon. The spot hasn’t changed in shape or size since Friday but has shifted, moving towards the centre of the sun, as seen from the earth. “Despite its duration, the M-class flare shouldn’t affect us but the X-class flare may have some reaction here,” said Debiprosad Duari, director of research and academics at the MP Birla Planetarium. http://abcnews.go.com/Business/wireStory?id=419578 Intelsat Loses Satellite After Problems Jan 17, 2005 — NEW YORK (Reuters) - Satellite operator Intelsat Ltd. has lost a satellite following an unexpected electrical power problem, less than two months after electrical problems ruined another satellite. The event is the latest blow for the world's No. 2 communications satellite operator, after a satellite malfunction in November had threatened to abort the company's planned $3.1 billion sale to private equity investors. Private equity group Zeus Holdings, which has the right to pull out of the deal because of the latest event, is evaluating the impact of the satellite failure, Intelsat said in a statement late on Sunday. Intelsat said it and Lockheed Martin Corp., the maker of the satellite, are working together to identify the cause of the problem. Last edited by alkemical; 01-17-2005 at 08:09 PM.. Reason: TypeO |

Solar flares have always disrupted our satellite functionality. From telescopes to radio and TV satellites to the GPS satellites, nothing is unaffected by the solar flares. This is not big or new news Joshua. I expect more from you.

![]() I think you misunderstood the context of the post. I meant, you always bring up cool sh*t for us to ponder, stuff no one knows about but this, this is common knowledge. Every solar max it gets splattered over the airwaves as broadcasting stations have a legitimate excuse for being crappy in reception. I expect MORE from you than common knowledge ****er. |

well first off you aren't better than me. But i understand that delusions are part of some people's perception after their ID gets out of control on an internet message board. I think this is becoming a much more increasing problem and i wanted an easy way to get this discussion growing on it. |

![]() The problem is increasing but not the flares. The problem is increasing because we have even more satellites than ever before and we are growing increasingly dependant upon them for our daily routine. Fear not, NASA is working on new materials to combat space radiation from solar flares to help better protect our satellites. Lots of ideas, coating them with a thin layer of lead will help, using smart materials and internal atmospheres on the circuit's will help. ALl insignificantly alone, but together will help keep our communications and war capabilities safe. We tackle these problems as they arise. |

I think the sun's increasing volitility is going to present a problem for life on earth. It's going to effect the magnetic poles and could help cause a pole shift. |

You are right dave, there is NOTHING we can do. Except try to enjoy the ride. Maybe if the sun changes, it would effect how humans consicsious would change. Sorry for the butchered spelling.

see MHS, i consider myself a spiritual person. I try not to buy into a total ideology. I have what i believe i think works, but am always open to learn new things.

Not really, i don't really try all religions anymore. I sort of studied them all and found that mostly the 3 majors taught the same thing, just different methods.
I'm mostly a kabbalist now, with a pinch of zen thrown in, and a dash of hindu. |

some of that kind of philosophy isn't necessarily bad, b/c as far as I know, those types of religions do not teach you to be a bad person, they have some very good moral principles. I think it is interesting what you speak of in regards to what you believe. but I believe there is more to it than that as you have read I'm sure |

Oh there's more i'm not sharing with you. But i do belive in god, just not a 'labled' god. I also believe in re-incarnation, but it doesn't mean that it's back on earth, etc.
I feel we are all aspects of god, and as my quote says "when i die the world ends" - is a very gnostic statement that if pondered does make sense. |

Now the magnetic poles are shifting, but from my understanding that is due to the Earth's core and not the sun. The sun's radiation will affect us because of the shifting magnetic fields and scientist's aren't really sure how much, but the sun isn't causing it. As for pole shifts, they are not common, but also not uncommon. They have occured several times in Earth's past and are looking to occur again. It won't be pretty, but human's as a species should survive it. Many will die but like TheDave said, there is nothing we can do about that. Even though he was referring to the sun, the same applies to the Earth's core. It's beyond our technological capabilities at the moment and it is not because of human presence. Just one of those things we will have to endure I guess. |

You are such a dingas. If gamma rays and xrays effect the magnetic field of the earth, i guess that can have NO EFFECT on what could happen. thanks again boy wonder. |
