Bush SERIOUS about balancing the budget
Bush (Smirk) is expected to propose what amounts to a freeze in spending in programs outside national security in a bid to show he is serious about meeting his goal to reduce the deficit, congressional aides and budget experts said on Thursday.
But the cap would only affect about one-sixth of all federal spending, budget analysts said. Discretionary spending does not include automatic payments like Social Security and Medicare.
Bush's budget will not include the skyrocketing cost of military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Instead he will submit a supplemental budget request in February or March totaling between $80 billion and $100 billion, congressional aides said.
Let's see if I have this correct
1)We are goona freeze (not reduce) 1/6th of the budget
2)We are not goona freeze 5/6ths of the budget
3)We are not gonna count money needed for Iraq or Afganistan
4)We are gonna "solve" social security by blowing $1 Trillion right now but of course but we are not gonna count that either
5)We are committed to reducing the deficit by half by 2009
6)Even if you are not laughing out loud right now at this preposterous proposal, gradually reducing the deficit by half between now and 2009 will add a mere $1T to the national debt by 2009. (not counting the $1-2T for social security reform or the $.5T we might blow in Iraq (if not more), nor does it do ANYTHING about the far bigger problem of medicaid/medicare.

This is one of Team Smirk's favorite and most frequently performed hat tricks: A show of accountability designed to create a false appearance of actual accountability.
(Not to be confused with the trick whereby they create the illusion that they actually share the values and care about the interests of their supporters.)
