Default Angels change name to "The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim"

Angels add Los Angeles to name

By Associated Press, 1/3/2005 12:52

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Baseball's Angels have a new name, and it's a mouthful: The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

The switch will ''strengthen the Angels' long-term economic health by enhancing the marketability through this metropolitan area and beyond,'' the team said Monday.

But the American League club's latest in a series of name changes could provoke a fight with the Anaheim City Council. Anaheim officials claim the change breaks the terms of the team's 33-year lease with the city.

When the franchise began in 1961, owned by singing cowboy Gene Autry, it was the Los Angeles Angels. The team became the California Angels when it moved to Anaheim in 1966. In 1997, when the team was controlled by The Walt Disney Co., the franchise was renamed the Anaheim Angels.

Arte Moreno bought the team in 2003, one year after it won the World Series, and he wanted to change the name.

The Angels drew 3,375,677 last season, the third-highest total in baseball behind the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers.

I think the new team name is on steroids.

The Dodgers are going to be thrilled with that bit of news.

I can't blame Arte Moreno. He's the first Latin owner in baseball and he bought a team in the only town in Southern California with a German name.

Good point Slap.

My first thought was of someone saying something like "I think L.A. will make it to the Series this year"......and getting a response of, "Oh yeah? Which one?"

I am, for as much as Anaheim never wanted to be out "little brother", they're sure acting like it now.

I kind of find it funny though cause the past 2 offseasons they've made some moves to really put themselves out there as a quality team and could've lost the "L.A." thin because of that, but they're doing it to themselves right now.

Here's a question, with Troy Glaus gone, who do they have to play 3B?

I thought this was from the Onion at first.

It beats "The Angels of Los Angeles Brought to you by Levitra".

First the Mightly Ducks of Anaheim and now the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. How embarrassing for the city of Anaheim to have to two worst names in all of North American sports.

I think it's a young guy from AAA... Dallas McPherson or something.

Yes, it's Dallas McPherson. He's an outright stud, which is exactly why they didn't resign the overweight, injury prone Glaus. Instead, they overpaid for a 39 year old Steve Finley, when they should have allocated their resources to what should have been their #1 priority: starting pitching.

Adding a quality guy like Steve Finley to your team is rarely a mistake.

I concur...to a certain extent. Finley is an excellent player, no doubt about it. Like Barry, age has yet to effect him. The Giants put the full court press on him, desperately trying to secure his services...only to be rebuffed for the 3rd time. Thus we had to settle on Alou. For my money Finley would have been a better overall fit due to his defense. But Alou is a better hitter, especially at Pac Bell, where left handed hitters struggle mightily.

But as for the Helos, they would have been better served spending the money they gave Finley on some SP.

The only thing I don't get it is, how can you be both Los Angeles and Anaheim.. Logically, to me at least, it just doesn't make sense. Either you're from LA or Anaheim, but not both.

They are hoping it will be a situation that starts out as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, then slowly morphs into the LA Angels. We'll all be too lazy to say the whole name anyway, and that's just what they want.

That piece of crap statement is the whole thing in a nutshell. Every single person speaking in mission, vision, schmisson speak like that should be beaten with every bat in the Los Angelas Angels of Anaheims equipment room.

In the same vein, the New York Giants will now be known as the "The Giants of New York at the Jersey Meadowlands".

If the official name is "The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim" then wouldn't that translate to:

"The The Angels Angels of Anaheim"?

What a redundant mess that is.

Since they want the names of two cities in the "official" moniker...then why not just go back to being the California Angels and make a grab for the entire state?

Really, I never stopped thinking of them as the California Angels anyways.

I know you were being tounge-in-cheek, but I see a huge difference in the two. Mile High Stadium conjures up many good images in the minds of Broncos fans. It makes sense to have that included somewhere in the name. The only reason to include Anaheim in the Angels name is because (maybe) Disney paid for it.
