States Ranked: Smartest to Dumbest The smartest state in the union for the second consecutive year is Massachusetts. The dumbest, for the third year in a row, is New Mexico. These are the findings of the Education State Rankings, a survey by Morgan Quitno Press of hundreds of public school systems in all 50 states. States were graded on a variety of factors based on how they compare to the national average. These included such positive attributes as per-pupil expenditures, public high school graduation rates, average class size, student reading and math proficiency, and pupil-teacher ratios. States received negative points for high drop-out rates and physical violence. How does YOUR state rank? The fact that Massachusetts is the smartest state doesn't surprise me because it's in Ivy League country. Let's see...

Nevada finished 49th and frankly, I'm surprised they ranked that high. The New Mexicans must be utterly deplorable.
Nevada spends about 55% of the national average per child each school year. The schools are drastically overcrowded. Gang violence has escalated. They've also had an alarming number of teachers accused of having sex with students. |

Iowa #8, but just spending money per capita doesn't mean your spending wisely becase of differences in cost of living. Less money buys more education here. Iowa is, or was, the most literate state in America. I haven't checked because someone had to read it to me.
Also, alot of kids farm out of H.S. so they don't go to college or just vocational. You will notice that the upper midwest ranks right below the Ivy League. The educated idiots can thump their chests as far as I'm concerned. |

Does that mean for every moron I see that Alec sees 3? Y'know, I'll bet a list of states by average household income or average individual income would be very similar - especially at the top. MA, CT, and NJ are always the top 3 I think (in whatever order). |

49th, I'm not surprised. Nevada's classrooms are too overcrowded and pre-pupil expeditures are well below the national average. It's a shame. The recent ballot question to appropriate spending in this area was defeated on Nov. 2. Folks here want to constantly complain, however when it comes time to make a difference, they want to talk the talk but not walk the walk.

You should see the crazy high tech machinery we invested in this year to farm. Farmers don't rake the soil and throw in seed.
The combine can detect minute differences in yield thru a cornfield so you can alter the fertilizer according to yields ect. The Tractor has a GPS system and tracks. The New Kinsey box (holds 2/3 of a semi load) also has tracks for muddy conditions and has a 12 inch high speed auger. The new planter was 75,000 used. And it's not a Combine to give you an idea. And that's the new stuff. It's the old stuff that you have to be a hands on repair engineer. I'm amazed at my nephew and brother how they can organize the operation. It's not a scrub proof clean room, but it's not your fathers farming either. It's even more amazing engineering stuff, but it has to work in mud, rain and whatever nature can throw at you. Considering the "blue" states are heavily into high tech and white collar jobs while the red states are more heavily vested in blue collar jobs in agriculture and what not, this is not surprising.
Its not that those states are smarter, its just that those states require higher levels of education for residents to make a living in the high cost of living areas of those states. Many people do not see a need to get a college education if they can work and earn a decent living without one and in the south and midwest, there are many things one can do without a college education and be middle class. Of course their wages compared to a New Yorker's wages would be lower class or poverty but since the cost of living is so much lower, it all balances out. Also, there is more competition for fewer jobs in the blue states due to heavy population and an education is something that is almost necessary just to compete with other labor. I have a friend, he is a mailman that makes 45K a year. Never stepped foot in college and went straight to the Post Office after high school. He owns a house, three cars and a Ninja. He has never even desired to "better" himself because he is comfortable where he is. So, while you may value an education and think it is important where you live, remember that that is not the case everywhere. Further, Kansas State University has produced more Rhodes scholars than any other university. 99% of the the alumni of KSU is from Kansas or one of the surrounding states (Colorado, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Missouri). And, lastly but not least, who the **** cares. We are all Americans and we all have a role to play in our great society. |

On the flip side if a child is really intelligent it won't matter how little money is spent they will still come out intelligent. The only thing this study really measures is ranking states based on the emphasis the state puts on education. Not much more. |
