Default Bush Allies See Greater Terror Risk

Not talking about Poland here.

-----------------------------------------------------
By WILL LESTER, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - More than two-thirds of the people living in Australia, Britain and Italy — three countries allied with the United States in the Iraq (news - web sites) war — believe the war has increased the threat of terrorism.

Leaders of those countries — prime ministers Tony Blair (news - web sites) of Britain and John Howard of Australia and Premier Silvio Berlusconi of Italy — all get low marks from their people for their handling of the war on terrorism, an Associated Press-Ipsos poll shows.

More than half of those in the United States, 52 percent, believe the Iraq war has increased the threat of terrorism, while three in 10 in the United States think it has decreased the threat — a view promoted by President Bush (news - web sites).

"In the context of the presidential campaign in the United States, this is undeniably a blow for George W. Bush, since it shows that a majority of Americans don't agree with the main justification for his policy in Iraq," said Gilles Corman, research director at Ipsos-Inra of Belgium, who studies public opinion trends across Europe.

In Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Spain, a majority thought last winter that the Iraq war was increasing the threat of terrorism. That number has increased in each of the countries. Australians were not polled in the AP-Ipsos project last winter.

In Australia and each of five European countries polled, only about one in 20 believe the Iraq war decreased the terror threat.

Australians believe the war with Iraq is going to make terroism worse? They have a funny way of showing that by voting for the incombents to remain in office who have supported Bush and the war in Iraq.

Yet they just voted to keep their "chickenhawk" government in office after supporting Bush and making the threat of terrorism go up. Interesting.

I assume you're referring to Australia and not to the UK and Italy.

When did Australians re-elect John Howard?

The voters re-elected Howard because he has presided over a period of big economic growth in Australia--not because of his Iraq position.

Nevertheless he was reelected despite his support of Bush. If they were so against it they would have voted that way. His opponents major theme was to bring the troops home. Apparently that wasn't what the people wanted.

Not true.

The article BB just posted indicates that two thirds of Australians oppose the war.

Their happiness with Howard's economic record merely trumped the Iraq issue in the election.

I guess I was inadvertently giving him the benefit of the doubt.

The smart money says bush is still a practicing drunk/drug abuser.

If not you should. I would routinely go to the bars along the rocks area in Sydney, and they would always buy me drinks because I was an American. We would plag rugby, go wind surfing, boating, and a bunch of other crap. It was a lot of fun. Those Auzzies are freaking tough.
