Default College Rivalries

First off forgive spelling never could spell never will....
Now what is it with declaring a school a rivalry CU came out beginning of the season made public announcement that CSU is not a Rivalry. Nebraska does not count CU as a rival. OU and CU are suposed to be rivals... and there are a ton more I supose but I just know CU's off top of my head.

What makes a Rival? Air Force and Navy are the embodiment of a rivalry. No one desputes, but what makes that a rival where CU-CSU is not. Heck, fans got tear-gassed when CSU won for first time in heck ofa long time(I was there.) Players get into it more then usual game. CU looks towards Nebraska every year and that game sells out in first half hour of ticket sells.
So I ask again: what makes a Rival? And why wont CU acknowledge CSU or Nebraska acknowledge CU? If OU is a Rival why is that always a lackluster game it seems??

I think that alot of it has to do with a with weather a program is winning or loosing. In the 90's Neb was definately a rival. But normally its an instate team. I'm pissed because NDSU is not playing UND this year because we are D1 now. I understand why the football team isn't playing...but why all the sports. Sassy can you answer me that...so inherently SDSU(south dakota state) is our 'new' rival.

...it has to do with the Big 12 scheduling. That and some of the coaches not wanting to play if they are both undefeeated

Rivalries are developed and earned, not "declared".

Nebraska is just starting to get around to admitting KSU is a rival. We had to earn it. Before, we were just a stop on the road trip down to OU.

my rivalry, Michigan vs. Ohio State started out as a war between two states, and turned into 2 great programs that battle each other every single year with Big 10 and national championship implications.

The rivalry dates back to our match-up in 1902, when Michigan drilled us and ran the score up on OSU, I believe the final was 86-0. Pure hate just evolved from that game, there was tension bettwen the best Michigan school and the best Ohio school, but it seems after the wolverines ran up the score on OSU like that, is when the rivalry took off and there was just boiling hate running in their veins.

It's turned into the biggest rivalry in the country, November 20th in Columbus, OH is where it takes place again this year.

Texas and OU do play every year, to my knowledge at least. The Red River shootout seems to be an annual thing.

Now OU and Nebraska, the big historical rivalry of the Big 12, doesn't take place every year, unless both meet in the Big 12 championship game

Actually, UT and OU do play every year. The game is played in the Cotton Bowl in Dallas during the State Fair of Texas. But you are partially correct; UT seems to only show up once every 3 to 4 years.

Now that was freaky... While reading this thread, I heard a commotion in the bedroom. Upon further investigation, I discovered that a book titled, "Backyard Brawl: Inside the Blood Feud Between UT and Texas A&M" had fallen from a bookshelf.

Weird stuff...

Fooey, the real backyard brawl is Pitt vs. WVU.

Michigan and OSU my favorite... When I was younger I really enjoyed Michigan and Norte Dame. After watching the game this year I hope Michigan starts taking them seriously again!

I have been around some great rivalries in sports. And I have to say that the best College Football rivalry is Michigan and OSU. I have been to alot of the rivalry games that matter today. FSU/Miami, Alabama/Auburn, TENN/Florida, USC/UCLA (Back When it Mattered 1988), and three Michigan/OSU battles. I have not had the pleasure of OU/Texas but hope to get to next years game.

The only thing that is different about OSU/Michigan is that above every doorway at the Woody Hayes complex is a Plaque that says "BEAT MICHIGAN". Notre Dame has the most famous plaque, but the fact that the Hayes plaques are above EVERY DOOR in the place says how much this rivalry means to OSU. Plus, going to games at Michigan and at OSU is amazing. The pure hatred that is doled out to the opposing fans makes the Black Hole look tame in comparison.

Oh, and BTW I am a FSU fan. I like OSU and Hate Michigan but do not follow either team anymore. FSU/Miami is my favorite game of the year, unless Chris Rix is playing!

My favorite rivalry to watch is Kansas/Missouri..another case when the states actually were at war in the 1800's Its pretty intense here. When KU gets a hotel in Columbia, the fans find out where they are staying and buy out all the rooms around them and make noise all night. The opposing fans throw **** at each others bands. Its madness, I tell ya.

I like the KU/MU basketball war even though it's been pretty one sided as of late. Hopefully the football war will get just as intense if both teams can become competitive year after year.

I don't care for the Big XII scheduling. NU and OU should be playing every year around Thanksgiving. It's tradition. K-State has, I admit, risen to rival level with Nebraska since the formation of the North and South divisions. CU (where they are still celebrating the 62-38 win from three years ago) may have designated NU as their chief rival, but the game is only meaningful every few years. CU had a good couple of years, but it looks like the program might fall off for a while.

the biggest rivalries in the Big XII are probably OU-Texas, Texas-Texas A&M, OU-NU, and maybe Mizzou-KU (which is really more of a basketball rivalry).

outside the Big XII Michigan-OSU, Florida-Florida State-Miami, Notre Dame- USC, are big ones that come to mind.

What would sports be without rivalries?
