Default Powell: Iraq is `getting worse'

Now Rumsfeld says elections will be held regardless whether everyone can vote or not. Powell says everyone must vote to legitimize the elections.

-----------------------------
By Rick Pearson Tribune political reporter

Secretary of State Colin Powell (news - web sites) acknowledged Sunday that the situation in Iraq (news - web sites) is "getting worse," but he insisted hostile areas could be quelled to allow elections in January throughout the country.

Powell and Gen. John Abizaid, who is in charge of the U.S. Central Command, said tough military action would be needed in some regions, particularly the Sunni Triangle, to ensure stability for the election.

But in appearances on Sunday news shows, Powell and Abizaid disagreed over whether elections could be held in all areas of the strife-torn country. Allies of Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry (news - web sites) on Sunday questioned whether the balloting could be considered legitimate if it bypassed some regions.

Powell, in an interview on ABC's "This Week," acknowledged that violence by insurgents is worsening and traced it to the upcoming elections.
"They do not want the Iraqi people to vote for their own leaders in a free, democratic election," Powell said of the insurgency. "And because it's getting worse, we will have to increase our efforts to defeat it, not walk away and pray and hope for something else to happen."

But Allawi says it's getting better, so Powell is basically calling Allawi a liar. Why does Powell insult our allies so easily?

Collin Powell, like the CIA, is probably "just guessing". Right Mr. President?

Bush and Bremer created the insurgents

Bush and Bremer's policies of selling every Iraq factory to foreign companies to taking away Iraqi citizen's basic food rations, leaving them jobless, pennyless and starving, this explains why Iraqi's went from the joy of being liberated from Saddam to becoming Insurgents.

Powell is saying that the insurgency is heating up as predicted. The Bush administration has been warning that that insurgency would escalate during the leadup to the transition of power and then again during the leadup to national elections. Looks like they were right.

And Powell also pointed out that we are making progress in Iraq at the same time the insurgency activity is on the increase so I don't think he was insulting Allawi (or contradicting him) in any way.

What a bunch of stupidity. Of course they want to sway the elections. The enemy will do all it can to get the fly (Bush) out of the ointment in favor of Kerry.

But Bremer’s economic engineering had only just begun. In September, to entice foreign investors to come to Iraq, he enacted a radical set of laws unprecedented in their generosity to multinational corporations. There was Order 37, which lowered Iraq’s corporate tax rate from roughly 40 percent to a flat 15 percent. There was Order 39, which allowed foreign companies to own 100 percent of Iraqi assets outside of the natural-resource sector. Even better, investors could take 100 percent of the profits they made in Iraq out of the country; they would not be required to reinvest and they would not be taxed. Under Order 39, they could sign leases and contracts that would last for forty years. Order 40 welcomed foreign banks to Iraq under the same favorable terms. All that remained of Saddam Hussein’s economic policies was a law restricting trade unions and collective bargaining.

I took a stroll to your communist site you dimwit. Of course lowering taxes from the Dictatorship is what again? Did you expect a 40 percent tax to encourage foreign investment or ar you just brain dead? There is a risk involved. That is put into the tax rate dimwit. Notice it is outside the oil sector. This whole piece read like a communist manifesto, and yes I read it all.

Next is misleading. The assertion is that there wasn't a 15 percent tax on profits. The author asserts "profits" as non taxed, which is false. He a-hole forgot to say taxed profits.

Finally, you seem to think bringing in Banks is a bad idea. Your an idiot. Bringing in Banks needs every incentive in the book at this point.

What do you want him to do? Give him the John Kerry Tax plan?

The country needs almost zero tax except for Oil Companies.

You a bonafied IDIOT
