Default Demaryius Thomas has been "offered" a 5 year deal.

Gutless Drunk talked about talks being opened and that Vic Lombardi said they offered to pay him top five money, but the DP is stating that the deal is 5 years, no more details than that. Talks still going with JT.

The DP did say a few days ago that DT was not concerned with working on a contract right now and that the only thing on his mind is winning a Superbowl. Not sure if that's his way of saying he wants to play out the year on his current deal and become a FA next year or maybe something else. He's got to know they would franchise him so really if they truly are offering him top 5 money, as they should be, he should jump on it.

Knowing Elway this isn't going to be a Low ball figure, but it won't break the bank. Sign it DT!

Vic also says that he believes this should get done by the end of the month which means his source(s) is/are confident the Broncos are in the ballpark. The next couple of weeks both sides will do the "dance" for due diligence, then come to an agreement. Per his radio show this morning, 104.3 The Fan.

My comment: Bank on it.

Would be nice.

Wonder how much, as it always is, usually about guaranteed money.

Interesting to see how they structure this if he agrees to an extension. Didn't Elway already state that we blew all of our cash this year in FA, $30m or so.

I thought he meant they burned through the available cash for signing bonus type money. The upfront cash. The way I would imagine the do DT deal would be he plays out this season under his current deal and starting next season he starts collecting guaranteed money. I doubt there will be a massive signing bonus attached to his deal.

Really hope we start frontloading some of these contracts so that they get cheaper as our good young players become FA's. Makes it way easier to resign them.

Why in the world would he sign a new deal and play the season under his rookie deal. That would suck for him. You think he doesn't know if he has a monster year (likely) his bargaining position would be enhanced.

The only incentive for him to sign now is to get paid for this season too.

Look at Kap's deal. He's playing under a lower salary this year than he would have had in his rookie deal, but also got a signing bonus.

If the Broncos and DT reach an agreement I would expect the first two years of the deal to not exceed $15M in cap hit total.

Wouldn't it just be an extension and bonus $ can be when the contract starts?

That's not true. The incentive is a huge amount of guaranteed money and long term contract. It is extremely common for a player that gets extended to be given the same salary in their first year that they would have received under their previous rookie deal. You are mixing up real cash with cap funny money.

You think he does not know he would get that from just about 32 teams. He's not a chump that had one miracle season.

and lots of players would rather roll the dice and test the waters as a FA.

If I'm DT I want to get paid now or just play out the contract I have and set my value after another season with Manning throwing me the ball.

He gets the same amount of money in either scenario dude, it's just what they technically call it and how they structure it for cap purposes. Let's say he gets injured this season and it's career ending. He misses out on a **** ton of guaranteed money. It's a HUGE HUGE gamble, for what amounts to not that much more, for what? Because his base salary isn't big enough? Who gives a **** about the base salary anymore?

I am looking at his deal being more of an extension than a brand new deal.

Also there is more than just getting paid this season as incentive. It has probably been discussed by his agent that if a deal doesn't get done this season and they can't agree to something next season he will get franchised. Much better to sign on the dotted line now and be guaranteed money beyond this season instead of potentially being franchised next year. It is better to have a long term deal rather than gamble on yourself having another monster year and avoiding injuries to try for a few more dollars.

How would work, if he plays plays for what his contract reads now I don't see how that is the same than if his new deal starts now and he gets a handsome signing bonus. If I'm playing I want a deal that gives me some serious dough now in case of injury. If I'm gonna risk injury and no payday now I'm just waiting for next season for what would likely be a better deal than anything I sign now given there is no financial insurance against career ending injury.

Because you don't understand how extensions work. If he gets a contract with guaranteed money, that money is guaranteed... injury or no. When people talk about him playing as his contract reads now, they mean his base salary number, so that it's a lower number that counts against the cap this year.

OK I get the extension with the guaranteed money but that is not what the poster I had responded to said.
