Default Grading the Broncos' 2011 draft

I think it's fair to give a draft class 3 years before properly grading it. So with that said, here's the class of 2011.

In the wake of Hurricane McDaniels, Denver finished with the 2nd overall pick. Which to the other AFCW teams like Oakland and KC would pretty much be just another year, but for Denver it was uncharted territory. The team had been razed, morale was incredibly low, and the rebuilding process looked like it was going to take somewhere around 5 years. The team was due for an infusion of talent and a return to being the Denver Broncos. In stepped John Elway.

Three years later, Denver is on the heels of 3 straight AFCW championships (2 due in large part to Peyton Manning and the other with Timmy Turbo) and a Super Bowl appearance.
Five of the top six picks from that class (including the top 4 selections) project as 2014 starters on a team loaded with talent. Seven of the nine selections are still on the Broncos' roster. One of the UDFAs (Chris Harris) is a projected starter going into 2014.

What grade do you give this class?

Rd Selection Player
1 2 Von Miller LB
2 45 Rahim Moore S
2 46 Orlando Franklin OT
3 67 Nate Irving LB
4 108 Quinton Carter S
4 129 Julius Thomas TE
6 189 Mike Mohamed LB
7 204 Virgil Green TE
7 247 Jeremy Beal DE
UDFA Chris Harris CB (Included because he made the team and remains on the roster)

5 starters (and 6 if you think Irving is), including an All-Pro and another Pro Bowler. 2 other draftees still on the roster. You can't ask for anything more from a draft.

A+. No other way to view it. Hit on talent everywhere.

Well, let's see. We've got 9 picks & 7 of them are still on the team. 4 of the 7 are starters, and one of them is a blue chip, once in a decade player. One is a budding star(J. Thomas) that has pro-bowl talent, and two are solid red-chip starters. One other has started and played well(Carter), but has been hampered by injuries, while another provides quality depth (Green) and could start if injuries piled up at TE.

The two players that were cut are a 6th and late 7th round pick. However, they found a real gem in CFA in Harris, as he has proven to be one of the better nickel/#2 CB's in the league.

When looking at this draft, that really laid the foundation for a perennial playoff/ SB contender, I don't see how you could grade it less than A+.

A, without question. When teams put together two, three drafts like this one, they have dynasty runs. Pittsburgh in the 70's, San Francisco in the 80's, New England in the 2000's.

Our drafts are exciting now. In the Mike Shanahan era, they were almost always cringeworthy.

I voted B. It's largely because I need to see if Von Miller comes back close to form and keeps his nose clean. Second pick overall carries high expectations, fair or not.

Helluva draft. Would be great to have those every year or so.

Has to be an A -- two pro bowlers (Miller, Thomas), two solid starters (Moore, Franklin), one spot starter (Irving), and a special teams contributor (Green) is not too shabby.

I wish there would have been + and - options for each grade, that makes a huge difference.

I would have given the Broncos an A- on this draft but gave them a B instead because I didn't want to give them a straight up A. You can't just look at the players taken, you have to look at where you got them, the value of it all. Miller was the 2nd overall pick. It's obviously not a given that player would be special but it's somewhat hard to miss on that pick. Plus, his off the field problems, suspensions, all of that factors in. I think Moore hasn't played like a the 45th overall pick. He's improving but ever so slowly. Irving I don't count as a starter, Green has hardly seen the field. But they still get a very high grade IMO for hitting a home run with Harris. Picking him up as an UDFA and now he's a starting CB, that's huge. That's more impressive then picking Miller with the 2nd overall pick. Franklin is solid, Thomas is a up and coming star. Great overall draft. But it should be higher then many of our others since we picked 2nd each round, so to speak. This year picking 2nd to last each round, it's much more difficult.

Misread the thread title and thought it was 2014 draft. 11 is definitely an A!

I don't disagree with most of this thinking (for example, Irving is a starter as of now and I find it hard to hold anything against the Green pick since he's been a solid ST performer and has ostensibly become Denver's best inline TE). Taking all of the quoted into consideration, I still consider the draft a solid A.

The first four may be starters, but it really is the success of the "scout rounds" players that makes this such a stand-out draft.

Thomas was a steal.
Virgil is our best blocking TE.
Chris Harris is one of our most important and very best players.

2006 was the last time we got that kinda value in rounds 4+

Trev and Jackson in 2012 with 5th/6th round picks.

Although the rest of that draft minus Wolfe, maybe Oz is bleh.

Best Broncos draft ever. Would even be sweeter if they could win a Superbowl.

1975 Broncos draft that netted Louis Wright, Rick Upchurch, Rubin Carter, and Steve Foley was a very good one too

A. Without a question. Even when you look outside of the Von Miller pick. You're looking at pro bowlers in J Thomas. Solid starters in Franklin and Moore. Lets not forget good role players in Greene and Irving.

Definitely A.

Not just with the pics, but trading up for Orange Julius was a gutsy move for a very raw, developmental player.

Cool. The greatest drafts were followed a couple years later by a Superbowl appearance.

Including Chris Harris, if we hit a home run with Irving at MLB, this could be of one of the best class in the history of this team.

All of those 2011 draft picks were on NFL rosters this past season. That's all that needs to be said outside of the obvious Von and Franklin notations.

I voted A cause it was a good draft, multiple starters and impact players.

For those who voted B (and the retard who voted C) - can you please show examples of what an "A" draft looks like?
