Maybe he had leg cramps?

Those are twice as bad for horses.

Even with three in front of him running really soft fractions, Espinoza's decision to take CC 5 wide on the final turn looked pretty disastrous. Those turns are huge, and it looks like it used up his horse.

California Chrome's owner was pulling a Richard Sherman. He was pissed. He said it wasn't fair that other horses were in this race if they didn't participate in the other two big races.

Beyer is correct. Horses are increasingly bred to be sprinters, not to run three races in five weeks and finish with a 1.5 mile race. Most haven't done it before, and won't do it again.

I think it's completely unfair to run horses in this race if they haven't ran the Preakness or the Derby. That said, a horse should fully recover from a race in a weeks time. I agree with above comment, should not have taken the horse wide on those monster sized turns. Even taking 1 turn wide equates to a length or so. But Chrome didn't have that something special today. The times were not that fast. Just makes you appreciate those very very few horses that could pull off a triple crown. I think the more we see horses winning the first 2 legs of the crown and falling short, they will eventually do something about the rules making it so you have to run your horse in both the Derby and Preakness to run in the Belmont.

Pretty much agree with all of the above.

Interesting that between '73 (Secretariat) and '78 (Affirmed) there three triple crown winners (Seattle Slew in between).

It's no different than Olympic human runners. Some are better at sprinting and some are better at longer more endurance races. It isn't like the horses were that much better in the 70's it is that horse racing is down to a science. Horses that have the endurance to win the Belmont aren't fast enough in the shorter distances such as the first 2 races. It was no surprise as CA Chrome had a slow Preakness.

I personally think a horse that wins the Kentucky by a decent margin has no shot at the triple crown. A horse needs to barely win the Kentucky, win the Preakness while gaining lengths and win the Belmont. Afleet Alex mold is what a horse needs to be in not CA CHROME.

It's kind of stupid to have qualifying for the Kentucky but you don't need to qualify for the next two races. If you only have one race you need to qualify off of with earnings make it the last race.

It all depends on your perspective. Some owners know they don't have a shot to beat certain horses in the Kentucky Derby or the Preakness so they simply keep their horses from racing and hurting their value. What you're going to start seeing in the future, is horses like CC not being entered into the Belmont because of this. They don't want to lose value because they know other horses have been rested up and not used up so to speak. It's all fair for the business but it's not what fans want to see. They'll want to see a horse have a chance at the Triple Crown. The way the game is played today, it won't happen.

But also, it just has to make you revere horses like Secretariat that much more. Not only did Secretariat win the Triple Crown, the horse set a world record at the Belmont Stakes, a record that still stands today, by several seconds. Not an easy feat considering the horse ran the other 2 races.

"They're a bunch of goddamn cheaters," Coburn told Yahoo Sports. "If your horse doesn't even have the points to run in the Kentucky Derby, he shouldn't be able to run in the Triple Crown. They're goddamn cheaters."

I don't understand Coburn. You've always been able to run fresh horses in the Preakness and Belmont. Winning the Triple Crown is supposed to be hard.

You don't like the rules, don't play the game.

Takes a special horse and a lot of luck to win triple crown. Sham would of won triple Crown if he wasn't racing against Secretariat. Horses are just like humans some are better short distance sprinter than longer distance runners.

I don't know, Sham faded pretty hard at the Belmont. That horse was a big time sprinter, and seemed to have hit that wall the same as alot of these more modern horses are hitting.

Winning a triple crown aside, the case I make for making horses run in all three races or none, is the history of it. I'd hate to see a horse that did not run the Derby or Preakness and then only run in the Belmont, and happened to break Secretariat's record. I mean, do you then put an * next to that horses name because they missed the first 2 races? I would think so.

If you are going to call it the Triple Crown than I think you have to only allow horses that ran in the Kentucky Derby to enter the final two legs of the Triple Crown.

So they should change the rules, then? Every triple crown winner has performed under the current set so previous horses would be cheated.

Smarty Jones' owners would be pissed, and would be within their rights to sue.

They already altered one rule for that horse. He wasn't good enough. Everyone should get a participation ribbon!
