Default Britton Colquitt

I think we overpaid him. Looking at the other salaries for punters around the league, he's getting paid like a pro bowler and top 5 punter. He's not. His stats don't back up...even taking into account the short field and attempts...he's not even top in % of punts inside the 20.

Colquitt was 27th in the league in punts attempted at 65. He got paid 2 million last season. That's roughly $31,000 per punt. He punted 3 times in the playoffs...and had a punt in the super bowl where he screwed up. Should have been inside the 20...maybe even 10 but he short legged it to the 30.

His cap for the remainder of the contract is as follows:

2014 - 3.25 million
2015 - 3.75 million
2016 - 4.00 million

2014 salary cap will be 126.3 million...that means he will take up 2.7% of the cap in 2014.

That means, if we paid every player what we're paying Colquitt in 2014...we'd only be able to field 37 guys on the roster.

Upcoming season, he will be getting paid around $40,000 - $50,000 per punt depending on how many attempts he has.

Yup. 1 punt = making more than the average American. It will take him less than 10 seconds to do so.

He was team MVP for Tebow's season, we may desperately need him after Manning hangs it up.

He's definitely overpaid vs. production. Some of his numbers are inflated due to altitude. He could probably be replaced and I wouldn't mind a solid option brought in to challenge him in camp!

He is a pretty bad punter. What is his cap hit if he was cut now?

Cut him. Seriously. Find another punter as a UDFA or in the 7th and coach him up. That salary warrants consistent all-world performance, not mediocrity with occasional fail built in.

Another great contract that could have went towards a legitimate defender like Dansby.

Many said the same thing about Prater last year.
Colquitt is fine and so is his salary. Some here are worried about the wrong thing.

Look at his numbers in 2012. He was on fire. Dropping balls inside the 10 (hell with inside the 20) like no other punter. With this offense, his type isn't needed. If we are punting, we are probably closer to the 50 then our own 20. Manning might be around for only one more season and then we try a new QB. Those punts will be needed but not sure if Colquitt is going to be around.

I thought he was mostly terrible all year.

To add, didn't it seem like almost every Broncos opponent had great days punting against the broncos?

For what he makes punting to the 30 instead of inside 10 in the biggest game of the year warrants a review on your cost vs production. As good as he was a couple years ago he was equally as bad this year.

The Broncos were 27th in number of punts. I don't see the logic in having the highest paid punter in the league.

Not a bad gig if you can get it. I'm going to have my boys start practicing their kicking.

It did look like his punts when called upon didnt do much. How many were high enough to force a fair catch? He degressed this year.

I like Colquitt just fine but come on, that $3mil/year could go a long way toward getting some contributing talent.

As long as we have PFM, we should expect to rarely punt which means a middle of the road talent would suffice.

Your post is almost as stupid as his contract.

No ones talking about him being the reason for an SB defeat. They are talking about a contract moving forward.

Yeah let's cut him, oh hold on let's check first if we'd owe him any guaranteed money. Checks up idiots guide on how to run a salary cap. Hmm Colquitt has a cap hit of $3.25m oh and if we cut him there's dead cap space of $2.25m. FFS we only save $1m, what could we get for that another punter whoooooooooooooooohooooooooooooooooooo.

Bummer. I hadn't realized the contract was guaranteed. Ugh, bad move and uncorrectable! Obv that cap hit changes things and I certainly wouldn't advocate cutting him for paltry savings. But damn, why did we sign our kicking unit at altitude to above market contracts? Stupid moves both of them.

UDFA would sign for peanuts and Denver could save money and get rid of that contract despite the hit.

And who gives a rat's ass?
The guy's done a great job, he's earned his money.
The last thing you want in your team is your punter lead the league in a bunch of categories, I don't think that will be an indicator of how well the team is doing, is it?

So the thought is that Manning is going to stay beyond this next year? I think we have one more year with Manning. So we drop a punter for a year and then try and find another?

The punter isnt the problem, at least a money problem. We need PFM to restructure and cut about 5-8 mill. this next year. I am not sure he will but we shouldn't nickel and dime the rest of the team when Mannings salary is the issue.

I am sure the rest of the team would be just fine restructuring/cutting etc. while Manning is still paid the same. Players will be knocking down our door trying to come to Denver.

This thread isn't about cutting him. I don't see anywhere that even suggests that in the original post. Matter of fact the very 1st line says, I think we overpaid him.

I do agree that Colquitt never was able to get into rhythm during a game or even week to week basis. He was awesome when we had Tebow.

But colquitt doesn't have one of the strongest legs in the league...he's getting paid for accuracy. I've seen other punters (Schifres, Andy Lee etc) and they have booming legs with accuracy. Getting paid like what Colquitt does means you better have both.

And...Matt Prater deserves his contract. Kickers are the last people you want to underpay or just play musical chairs with.
