Can we bring back Justin Bannan?

Justin Lewis Bannan[1] (born April 18, 1979) is an American football defensive tackle who is currently a free agent. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justin_Bannan

The red flag about Seymour is why hasn't he been signed with teams decimated with defensive line injuries, Dallas, Chicago, New England to name a few.

Didn't think I'd say this and this is for my bro DB4L.. but I would like Bannan back if Malik doesn't see increased playing time.

Losing Big Vick is a big loss. Any plans we had of physically dominating the opponent surely had him included.

Unrein and Williams aren't starting material.

Bring in Bannan.

If we play Malik, the pass rush will increase, and he's solid but not stout verse the run. Here's where a first round DT would come in handy.. It's ashame he's not ready.

As it was pointed out, without getting into another debate... Our scheme would change if Malik/Wolfe took over inside. I see no reason to move Wolfe to put Ayers on the field. I want to see Malik get more playing time.

They are boss hoggin'. Add a legit WLB and a better CB and S to that defense and it is elite.

It's interesting most of the top DTs from the draft have played well this year despite being rookies, and then there's Sly..

We have that in Malik, I would like to see more of him. He's an upgrade over Vickerson in pass rush, a slight downgrade verse the run. But penetration can kill a running play.

I truly believe he can be our poor mans Geno Atkins..

I do worry slightly about our LBs with Malik inside as a starter, but there's nobody else on the roster who's worth starting.

And the problem with Wolfe inside is what he does for Von from the outside. Sure he can take snaps inside on passing downs, but I really don't want to move him inside for Ayers to get more snaps at DE.

Fully expect Bannan to be brought back, he knows the scheme and can play the run well.

Whats your concern? Malik and Wolfe play inside on passing downs. Granted Vickerson can push the pocket and be disruptive if not a running play, and we will lose that, but you were also calling for him to be cut after that attempt to injure the Colt center. So we are almost in that situation, maybe Karma caught up to him?

Wasn't Seymour a 3-4 DT?

Bannan would most likely be the guy...if he stayed in shape this long into the season. Although Seymour's leadership would be invaluable heading down the stretch!

But other teams have been decimated at DT and none of them brought him in..
Dallas, New England, Chicago.

They don't necessarily have to bring in a DT, IMO.

For example, if thought there was a better player at DE that was better at DE than any DT available on the scrap heap, they may bring him in and just kick Wolfe or Malik inside to permanent DT duty for the rest of the year. And let the new guy back up the DE's.

Just a thought, but of course it would only make sense if there is a servicable DE out there. I wonder if Youboty has made strides? If so, he could get promoted.

Absolutely an option, but there isn't really a particularly effective DE out there who fits our current scheme. Another problem is moving Wolfe because of what he does to facilitate for Von, that's chemistry we would lose.

We would also no longer play read and react (A 2 gapping technique) from our DTs up front, since we would be losing size kicking Wolfe inside. The positive is the pass rush would improve, the downside is we would be exposed against the run.

As much as I think Malik needs to see the field more, I do like his role as a sub package pass rusher. Wolfe opens so much up for Von, it's hard to move him inside and lose that chemistry.

The way I see it there are three options.

1. Sign Bannan/or another DT to play base downs without changing the scheme, still playing read and react to the run and substituting to our packages and looks with Malik and Wolfe, which is our strength.

2. Change the scheme to more of a penetrating traditional 4-3 style scheme and not the hybrid we run. Move Wolfe to DT, and bring Ayers to LDE. Our LBs will be exposed as we will be MUCH smaller upfront, and this may not benefit Von to well, or it could have no affect on him.

3. Heavy rotation. Give Malik increased reps at DT. I'm not sure if he could handle the workload of a full time DT. Williams or Unrein could play base downs and Malik sub in as he does now just more frequently and increase his playing time. Maybe he could become an eventual starter.
