Default Congressional approval sinks to single digits

Way to go, rethugs!

If congressional leaders hoped their institution’s approval rating would improve after the shutdown crisis ended, the new Gallup poll will come as a bitter disappointment.

The newly released figures show Congress’ approval rating dropping to just 9%. When was the last time Gallup showed congressional support this low? Never – Gallup has been asking this question for about four decades, and approval has never slipped into single digits until now.

Not sure why you would cheer the sad state of country. Sadly it appears it's only getting worse as a whole.

At a party the other night this came up and a person asked a question if people could even name 5 things Congress was working on, or should be. All these people saying how much they suck could not even do it. It's the media that determines how the polls come out.

As miraculous as it may sound, Cut has stumbled onto a fact. Congress is just the whipping boy of a hopelessly corrupt system of government. They come into office and spend their terms running for office. Corporations feed them the necessary money to keep running. If they don't do what they're told, no more money. And round and round it goes. That is our system of government. The general welfare of the people is no longer part of the equation. The corporate and financial overlords have a primary ethos: Get it all while the getting is good. Short term interest is all the interest they need, or want.

Gramm, the guy most responsible for overturning Glass/Steagle, left government to become a VP at UBS Bank, who profited mightily from his previous "works." Through Citizens United, Scalia took a murky misreading of law by a court reporter and used it to make corporate personhood law. And he was happy and proud to do it. Citigroup is currently rewriting Dodd/Frank. And I mean that literally. They are writing the legislation and turning it over to their congressional patsies to pass. The "too big to fail" banks have grown 30% since The Great Recession started. Wealth and power has become even more concentrated than it was before their greed destroyed our country. And the derivatives, and other financial schemes, have not been stopped. In fact, they have proliferated. The financial wizards spend all their time coming up with new games to play for profit that having nothing to do with building a stable future for our country and our society, or creating jobs, or building new, long term businesses or long lasting value. Wall Street is in the midst of a frenzy as potent as a gold rush and our sold-out government is swept along, unable to stop it. The DOW is at 15,750 while the majority slip into poverty.

As a sidenote, Kraft just won a multi-billion dollar settlement from Starbucks. You know what they are going to do with all that money? Expand? Build new business? Hire new workers? Research new markets? No. Their CEO announced a giant, stock buyback. 95% of the profit since The Great Recession has started has gone into the pockets of 1% of the population. Meanwhile, a triptych painting by Bacon just broke the all-time record for art sales with a price tag of $142 million. The American people are so stupified by a media machine grown propagandist that they are unable to simply read the writing on the wall.

But there is some good news. Elizabeth Warren is again raising the fight against too-big-to-fail. Wall Street is terrified at the prospect of her candidacy and is doing all it can to push another Clinton forward. Occupy is buying up $15 million in Americans' medical debt, and forgiving it! The fight to rewrite the current greed-is-good ethos of America is joined. Reagan led us down the wrong path. Time to turn it around. Pick a side.

Chris Hedges is one of the most impressive modern commentators out there. I'll have to order the book by Wolin that he recommended, "Democracy, Incorporated." I don't think we are guaranteed a terrifying descent, but a lot of Americans have to wake up in order to stop it. This one percenter economy just might do it.

Again, TR said it best. He pointed out that this is the same struggle that free men have always faced, in age after age. Those who are greedy or avaricious, are constantly working to seize wealth and power. They never rest. We have to understand the human failing. They're not much different than junkies pursuing a fix. A free society has to be constantly vigilant to oppose the corruption from within.

I wonder if TR (or anyone else, for that matter) could have envisioned an age (our own) in which so many dupes believe that giving the greedy and avaricious everything they want is somehow good for our economic health as a nation?

Republican or Democrat, doesn't matter. The reason the schedule Congress keeps was designed this way was to ensure appropriate travel time for Congressmen to return to their constituencies. It's out-dated. Congress should be required to work 4 days a week, at least.
