Fox was slated to have this procedure in the offseason but held off. Ironically, he flew to North Carolina during this weeks bye to meet w surgeon about a February procedure
Some things in life you can't make wait.
Might as well take care of this problem now and find out the scope of the problem.
Funny I was watching last night on the Smithsonian channel a show where they explained artificial heart valve transplantation.
Unbeleivable technology and the procedure in itself is amazing.
Godspeed John!

Think it will have the opposite effect - Fox is a player's coach but no master mind. Gase & JDR will handle his duties just fine and the players will rally around their loved but sidelined coach.

The question for all broncos fans out there, and I should start a thread about this, maybe baja will...
So, who's going to be our interim head coach.
The logical candidates are: defensive coordinator Jack del Rio and running backs coach Eric Studesville.
Who do you prefer. or does it really matter?

That's what I'm hoping. Although JDR rips off a string of blow out Wins and his ticket out of Denver becomes real.

No real mystery. JDR will be interim head coach. Not going to lie, I worry about how his additional duties will impact an already shaky defense.

The other big question is if one of the defensive position coaches will take on a coordinator role, or if JDR would still call those plays as well.

That's a good question.

The d-line coach Rodgers is pretty young and green.

Richard Smith the LB coach was the Texans DC for three years and has been a defensive coach for 25 years. My guess is he calls the plays if JDR doesn't.

I know this sounds stupid but if Gase calls the offensive plays and JDR calls the defensive plays, what exact does fox do? Challenges and time outs? Tells Gase to run or pass? Getting the right Personnel on the field? Deferring coin tosses? I'd rather Gase call offensive and JDR sticks to calling defensive while either chooses when to challenge etc

Jack Del Rio will steer the ship now, huh? Well at least he has experience. Get well, Fox. We'll need you for the playoffs.

Surgery to replace a stenotic aortic valve typically requires a sternotomy -- cracking the chest wide open right down the midline. Ask anyone who's had a sternotomy how long it took to feel normal. Probably a minimum of 6 weeks if everything goes perfectly.

Considering fox steers neither the offense or the defense, I question how much it'll affect the broncos

I was just about to post this. Can't see being a large blow if both those guys are still calling plays. Unless they miss him watching film and game planning during the week. What if they start coming out strong in 1st half of games and play even better with end results being convincing wins? What would that say about Fox?

CEO don't manage the day to operations in business either. But they set the tone and they manage the VP's and managers. Don't minimaluze what a HC like Fox does. We see some impact, but I am confident it will be but a bump in the road. Fox is great surrounding himself with talented coaches.

STATEMENT FROM THE DENVER BRONCOS:

“Denver Broncos Head Coach John Fox will undergo an aortic heart valve replacement early next week at a Charlotte-area hospital. He will take a leave of absence from coaching for at least the next several weeks.

“Our focus at this time is Coach Fox’s health and well-being. We extend our thoughts and well-wishes to him for a full and speedy recovery.

“Coach Fox was advised by doctors months ago that his defective aortic valve would require this procedure following the 2013 season. As part of his trip to North Carolina over the bye week, he had a preoperative appointment on Thursday with his doctor, who informed him to seek medical attention immediately if he felt any discomfort.

“On Saturday, Coach Fox began feeling light-headed while golfing with friends. He was taken to a hospital, where testing revealed he needed to have this procedure as soon as possible.

“The club will announce its interim head coach as soon as that decision is finalized.”

STATEMENT FROM HEAD COACH JOHN FOX:

“I sincerely appreciate all of the support from friends, Denver Broncos fans and so many around the league today.

“Although I am disappointed I must take some time away from the team to attend to this pre-existing health condition, I understand that it’s the right thing to do. I have great confidence in our coaches and players, who are fully committed to our goals.

“I look forward to returning to coaching as soon as possible.”

If Fox is the players coach we believe him to be, the team will rally around this Chuck Pagano style.

Feeling "light headed" due to an underlying aortic valve stenosis is the brain lacking oxygen because the heart cannot pump enough oxygenated blood through a pinhole valve. If you wait too long to correct the issue, the heart suffers serious damage. I personally don't like the "wait until you are symptomatic" approach, especially with younger folks like Fox. I wonder how he's managed to make it this far at altitude.

Oh I agree, but it still will have some bumps. Maybe it is seamless and just validates the theory that great managers surround themselves with great support.
