Agreed - but there are even larger issues at play here:

1) it is literally impossible for us to manually "scrub" all of these images from the site. Where does that leave TJ?

2) Google has imposed stricter censorship on the OM then they do on their own Image Search results. Is this fair? Should we all just roll over and 'obey' them because of the Golden Rule? ("He who has all the gold makes all the rules.")

I'm willing to put my money where my mouth is -- is anybody else? If 20-30 of us pony up, then the cost shouldn't be too prohibitive....

How much is the site/bb renewal? Has that been answered yet?

All we need to do is set up a paypal donation site and just make sure everyone knows the site won't be up if TJ doesn't get the funds.

I've seen it on countless other message boards, they just ask for donations and the community comes through.

Of course it is, we tried to come up with some solutions to help out, but they were ignored.

Many people have offered to kick in some money to keep this place free from censorship and rigid rules.

I know what it costs for server space/maintenance and I know that there could have been alternative solutions.

I hope Google is kicking Taco enough money to make it worth allowing them to set the rules and guidelines for the entire Orange Mane community.

No, no questions have been answered on anything regarding associated costs.

I think that SoCalBronco started most all of my birthday threads and I know there are a lot of violations (pic wise) in those. I mean, you might as well find a way to delete all "Happy Birthday" threads -- which is thousands that are going to have that picture of the girl with the hats and cake.

Yeah, those sexist losers at Google. No complaints about dude pics?

For reals, I can totally understand them not wanting nude images but a women in a bathing suit, what the F is wrong with that? I guess we have to post these kinds of women from now on.

I think what Taco would prefer is if we all donated what we could or what we thought the site was worth to us without him having to be a bad guy and say I need $XX.XX from everyone or I am going to shut down this site. Plus it is a pain in the ass to go track membership renewals etc...

Just do what I do, at least once a year, usually around the 1st of the year, I paypal Taco what I can afford to for my years worth of usage. I sure wish it could be a lot more and hopefully once a few things get sorted out it will be but I do this on my own. I figure for all the time I am on this site I can give back something.

Yep, I like this idea. I donated to a free message board I used to frequent years ago. You got a little icon next to your username that showed you were a "Pal" (that's what it was called). You got access to a "Pals-only" forum. You got to have a signature and also a larger avatar size.

The OM as we know it, free and beautiful, would still exist as it does now. Because I know TJ doesn't want to make it a pay site. But those little perks would bring in (perhaps) enough donations to keep the site running.

EDIT: I think there were 4 levels...platinum, gold, silver, and bronze. Different donation amounts and of course, better perks the more you give. But again, the basic premise of the message board was still free to anyone and everyone. Just like now.

I could be wrong but Google is not coming on the site and looking at any pics. What they are doing in monitoring the links to the pictures. So if you take a hot chick in a bikini from a church site and the same pic from a porn site Google will only have a problem with the one from the questionable site. Of course when you google images a lot of them come from more risque sites even if the picture themselves are n't that bad.

So I would believe just regular pics of cheerleaders, actresses and the works would be fine no matter how scantily clothed they are.

Of course I do not know any of this for sure but it is the only thing that makes sense. My site was flagged and shut down for a time because of the Kyla Cole pictures even though she was wearing a bikini.

My birthday picture of Melissa Midwest isn't from a questionable site.

I post it from my picture hosting account at Picture Trail.

We already had a no-nudity policy, so I would imagine only a SMALL percentage of pictures come from questionable sites. Most of the offending pictures were found in the the Speaking of Butts thread...

I appreciate that people have ideas, but I have to say that I'm surprised that there are people who think that I should publicly disclose the financials of this place. That would be insane. I can't imagine anyone I know doing such a thing.

I have squirrelled enough away to cover the server fees for the rest of the season, and am examining options. My first option is to clean as much of the content as possible and give Google's algorithms another run at the site. They've been a good partner for this site, all things considered. They pay regularly on a predictable schedule, and it's typically been enough to either break even (in the Summer) or cover the nut under a few inches of snow (in the winter).

If Google's algorithms don't let us back into the compound, there are other servicers that I've got lined up. But as I said before, the concern is that we run into the same problem with whatever servicer the site goes with.

As far as it goes, though, Google is enforcing a rule that we've always had, but were more lax on than their big data algorithms are. We've always had rules against the silly waves of "boob mojo" and what not. Before, I tried to redirect that energy into the Horses Butt forum. And even then people complained.

For my part, I don't believe that a sexy avatar here or there is going to be a big deal once we get past the initial issue. But we'll still have to actually enforce the rules against picture such as Melissa Midwest. Which is a shame, to be sure, but if this site can't absorb the loss of Melissa Midwest... well... I don't believe that's the case.

This site is about building community around one thing and one thing only: The Denver Broncos. Everything else is secondary to that main cause. Unfortunately, to do that I have to keep my eye on the incoming and the outgoing. Running a popular forum isn't free.

I understand that there are people here who think that a pay or donation model would work fine. And they might be right for the short term, but I've learned that model only goes so far. It can't be planned on. It's not steady in the same way that I can look at a google analytic projection and plan things like software upgrades, or paying a geek to help out with server optimizations.

That said, I appreciate that there are people who want to give back. There's a thread which details how they can do that: http://www.orangemane.com/BB/showthread.php?t=9094 - It's not required. I've never been comfortable with it, mostly because at my heart I'm a kid from Idaho potato country who has self sufficiency in my DNA. The thought of people out in this economy taking money out of their wallets to help me keep a server up strikes me funny. Though, I have to say, every time that it happens, I feel an amazing sense of gratitude that people enjoy the efforts here enough to kick in.

Again, I really don't see this as changing all that much outside of a few side amusements. I mean, who didn't like seeing Melissa Midwest every other day? But this site has always endeavored to operate in a NSFW capacity to accommodate people who are surfing the place from work - which constitutes the strong majority of our traffic. Ratcheting up the enforcement of a rule that we've always had in place but sometimes didn't have the fortitude to enforce is kind of a bummer, for sure. But it beats not having a reliable income stream. I'm just trying to keep this thing going so that we have have a site tomorrow, next year, and ten years from now.
