Big reason is the difference in Von Miller

Don't forget the $4M that they gave to Joe Mays last year.

Hey, I like Joe. He is a really good guy and stand up person. Good father too. Had a baby girl when he was with the Bison and always would be there for the fans. Gotta root for him. The hits he laid out on people in the Fargodome were so loud you could hear them in Grand Forks. He is a legend here in Fargo. I hoped it could have worked out, but it didn't.

I remember that it was very disappointing to lose Elvis, even at the fat contract he'd be getting at the reduced price. The media swarmed and made it into a black eye for Elway. The great part is Elway still found a way to come up aces as he navigated away from Freeney, signed Phillips who has outproduced Elvis at a much better franchise contract.

Even when Elway "loses", he wins. Suck it NFL.

One can only hope we'll draft a player at MLB similar to him soon.

On the subject of Doom. It was not a loss in terms of sack production. He wasn't great against the run and was overpaid.
Ideally he would have simply taken the pay cut and we kept him but it is what it is. We have some DL depth and should be able to develop Smith and draft someone else for more depth or to develop as a starter.

By what definition has he "outproduced" Doom?

Ravens are using Doom much more situationally than we would be.

Exactly. Sacks aren't the only stat. How many forced fumbles did he have? QB pressures leading to a hurried throw/incompletion/Int??

Love me some Elvis, but the Ravens not using him more (and only situationally) is not a good indicator for Elvis IMO.

Rounded out players play all the time.

Can't quote anything off the top of my head, but my recollection was that it was predicted in advance that the Ravens would plan to use him more situationally.

More of a decision based on depth than anything. If you have a player better against the run, you use him when you can.

We don't (and didn't last year either, FWIW) so we ride one guy for everything he's got.

Nah, he's cap cheap until '15, with a huge dead money cap hit for cutting him.

Yeah Joe's a good guy, and makes $1m this year for the Texans. Sounds about right.

Broncos couldn't afford him, because they had kickers to pay for.

He was overpaid and was getting cut unless he agreed to a restructured deal.
He didn't give us anything that hasn't been replaced for the most part.

Doom had 6 forced fumbles last season. Which was his career best.
He was not worth what he was being paid and he is no big loss.
Bailey going down this season has been a big loss, it has greatly affected the D, Von missing those first few games was a big loss, Moore being out has been a big loss, Doom is not a big loss. His production was replaced for about 1.8 mil compared to the 12 mil we would have had to pay Doom.

Elway made the correct move and the market even showed that he was overpaid. He's making 6.6 mil a season that is not guaranteed over a 4 year deal(The first season of his new deal is 8.5 so after this year it's 6.6 mil for 4)

Not saying I didn't think he was over paid. Just think he was more consistent getting to the QB than Phillips has been. Who I think has exceeded most people's expectations with his production this year. Solid signing for us for sure.
