Yup. As usual, if you look at everything they said in context it really isn't all that controversial. But, at the same time, they probably should choose their words a little more carefully.

I seem to remember the underdog team saying roughly the same types of things prior to Super Bowl XXXII

I referenced that in the original post. It hurts me that you didn't read it - REALLY HURTS, MAN!

The difference, the Broncos (as the underdogs) didn't say anything until after the game. Remember the interview on the field with Romo, where he said, "It was making us sick hearing about how great they were. We just kept our mouths shut, but it was making us physically sick!"

Just imagine how sick they will be of him after he scores at will against them.

Haha, no offense man...I distinctly remember Shanahan making the statement prior to the game though. The morning of the game maybe, but definitely before kickoff.

This is a game, a middling to bad NFC team we rarely see and on the road, that Shanny would half ass his prep on and we would get blown out. There were at least 2 of these every year after Elway retired.

Thing is that this is Manning and Manning is so driven to be the best EVER that he will not allow anyone to take this week off.

Sure road games are more difficult but it is not like there crowd will be in the game. As long as we don't turn it over 4-6 times or a rash of injuries I don't see them matching up to us one on one and winning this or even keeping it close, but as they say "any given Sunday..."

You don't remember correctly. Shanahan doesn't say those things about anyone and the team was surprisingly quiet about their chances.

Honestly, I think you are mistaken. One of the story lines that became legendary about that game was how Shanahan put the team on a gag order as it pertained to talking confidently about beating the Packers. The players said that they didn't feel like underdogs, as they put the game plan together. Specifically, they felt as if they could wear the Packers defense down with the running game.

I think you could find a lot of the quotes from after the game that referenced this. The ones I remember specifically came from Romanowski, who talked afterwards about how Shanahan had told the players to talk in almost reverent terms about how great the Packers were, and Tyrone Braxton, who said that Shanahan had put the team on a gag order, regarding how confident they were in the game plan.

What's more, what you're saying about Shanahan goes against what turned out to be his general philosophy about talking to the media. Shanahan became the king of the cliche, while he was the coach here. You knew what he was going to say about every opponent, regardless of how good or bad they were. Even when it came to Al Davis and the Raiders, he wouldn't really say much. Sorry, but there is just no way that prior to what was then the most important game in franchise history, he would have been saying anything that could have ended up on the Packers bulletin board.

Awesome moniker! Are you new here, or did you have a different name before?

I wonder who the shifty-eyed waterboy really is. I wonder if he has any idea that he's been labeled as such.

It came to me in a moment of divine inspiration

I'm new here. Lurked for years and just decided to make an account.

Ha Ha He probably has no clue. It does kinda look like TD though doesn't it?

Well, I no longer have a copy of the game, but I would swear that one of the announcers (Enberg maybe?) prior to kick off, made the statement that Shahahan was quoted as saying "we are not afraid of the Green Bay Packers".

I agree this is against Shanny's MO, no doubt, but it is a vivid memory. Either that or I am totally senile, dunno

I was watching AFC playbook this morning. It was showing how Gates tore them apart over the middle. If Orange Julius Has the same holes as Gates did he is going to have a monster of a day. HUGE TYPE> Could be a major statement game for him.

I can't wait.

I have Graham and OJ on one of my teams. I am very tempted to start Julius.

I'm sick of hearing how talented the Cowboys are only to watch them crash and burn every year.

Well...not the crashing and burning part.
