Rumors that Kane and Toews have agreed to re-sign for identical 8 year/10.8m AAV deals.

The cap is expected to continue to rise significantly, but yes 10.8 is a lot.

Reality is that there is no choice to be made here at all. You have to give those two guys what they want.

It will be more like 1/6 in a few years. The cap is going to rise like a mother****er after that Canadian tv deal and the upcoming negotiations with NBCU. I hope they split it up and go ABC and NBC.

I think the Avs can with internal growth alone. McKinnon was the most exciting player in round 1 as a young rookie, his growth alone is going to be awesome. Hishon was also solid for playing his first NHL game in the freaking playoffs. Not to mention Deuchene missing most of that 1st round series.

We do need another top 4 dman to solidify things though.

The Avs are likely to go internal for the D man unless they can trade for one. They simply refuse to sign a higher priced D man.
Roy was serious about doing that the Blackhawks did in drafting D men in the 2nd or lower and developing them.

I thought the NBC deal took place not that long ago, not aware of any expiring deal with NBC or NBCSN. I think the NHL is pretty set for TV deals.

Ummm, no way. Zero chance the cap is going to double in a few years. That would mean the cap floor would also double and that would absolutely cripple almost half the league (which personally I wouldn't mind actually).

It'll go up by $5 mil a year on average, which means they'll still account for about a quarter of the cap towards the end of those deals.

Toews and Kane deals now confirmed. $10.5M AAV each for 8 years.

What lockout?

Frontloaded that so the AAV doesn't mean a ton.

Not sure what you mean. AAV is the cap charge, right? Front loading vs the cap can work in the NFL but I thought that NHL cap only uses AAV and thus front loading is irrelevant - do I have that wrong?

Obviously, payout timing matters in terms of club cash flow but that is a different question.

I believe you to be correct good sir...

I'm happy because I feel Giroux at 8.275 for the next 8 years will be a steal.

Yeah the frontloading doesn't matter because the AAV is always the cap charge and in any event the new CBA put strict limits on variation of year to year salary from the AAV.

They are gonna pay 21m to 2 guys for 8 years. And due to recapture penalties, they pretty much cannot move Hossa for the life of his deal. Keith is going nowhere. That's like 35m on 4 guys. So guys like Hjalmarsson, Seabrook, Sharp etc. are gonna go, or at least 2 of them.

Chicago has a good prospect pool so they will be ok.

This is similar to Pittsburghs situation. Although Sid and Geno are a little cheaper than Toews and Kane....18.2. And most of PITs D the next few years will all be on ELC so that will help.

So long as the cap goes up 4-5m a year, this thing can work.

The AAV is the cap charge but what I meant by it not mattering is that once the bulk of the money is paid the actual per year payment makes them easier to trade or buyout if needed.
You also pay up front for their prime years and less for their potential down years if they begin to decline.
