Was extremely classy by him to support un-retiring #18. RIP to the Broncos' first ever QB.

For the man that started such a great tradition of excellent QB play for the Denver Broncos. Here's to you.

Rest in peace.

RIP. Probably will have his #18 retired again when Peyton hangs them up. Would that be the first time a team retired a single number for two players?

Of course he was well before my time too, but I liked this bit of trivia in the DP article:

Quote:
Tripucka completed 10 of 15 passes in the Broncos’ first-ever game in 1960, a 13-10 victory against the Boston Patriots.
http://blogs.denverpost.com/broncos/...ck-dies/21562/

Have to love a guy who started the franchise out with a win over the Pats.

He was an assistant coach for the Broncos that first year and when they had injuries at QB, he was thrown in there. Played for 3 years. First AFL QB to throw for 3,000 yards and one year named to the AFL all star team. R.I.P.

Perfect timing to ask him about letting Manning wear the number and he was around to allow it. RIP to our first franchise QB.

BTW, everyone beat the Patriots back in the day. They were the 2003-2012 Raiders (and soon you can add 2013).

I saw him in an interview and he seemed like a really cool guy. And as others have mentioned but maybe not elaborated on, Frank didn't just approve Manning wearing his number, Frank called Peyton Manning and personally asked him to wear it saying it would be an honor. That was pretty classy.

I like that our team doesn't retire numbers unless they were really, really legendary. And I realize he probably wouldn't qualify under his body of work, but after Manning is done here it will make the 18 a bit more special. And he was the one who started it so that's good enough for me.

In addition to the weirdness of 9/11 being the day after a Giants game, with this year 9/11 coming a few days before a Giants game, Tripucka passed away this morning in Elmwood Park, New Jersey, which is where the Broncos will be this Sunday. Elmwood Park is less than 10 miles from Met Life Stadium, as Big Frank used to go to many Giants games for years.

Frank's famous basketball son, Kelly, played for the Pistons for years and was a studio host for the New York Knicks for years until before the 2012-13 season when he was replaced.

I've always said the Broncos should retire 27 for Atwater and Darrent Williams

and preferably force knowshon to give it up in the process

I just now saw this. RIP to Tripuka.

Manning talked about paying to get him out to see a Broncos' game last year. Does anyone know if that ever happened?

RIP sir. As others have said, you are a truly stand up guy. It is my hope that the current 18 goes out this Sunday and plays in your honor to honor your contributions to our team but also your personal class in insisting they unretire your jersey for him. Condolences to your family and friends.

I could be wrong and I hope to be corrected if I am - but I thought the story went that the QB's we had were so terrible he went in to show them how it's done, and just ended up staying in for a couple years.
