You know how it is.

2015 Denver Broncos Draft Selections

1
2
3
5 (From Chicago)
5
6
  • Denver traded its own fourth-rounder to San Francisco in its move up to draft Cody Latimer in the 2014 Draft
  • Denver received Chicago's fifth-rounder as part of a trade down from the fourth round of the 2014 Draft.
  • Denver traded its own seventh-rounder to New York Giants for kicker Brandon McManus.
This number is likely to grow due to compensatory selections, which should give us several more selections.

Based off what I see above, we will be able to get some depth players back at a cheap price who are RFA's, along with some practice squad members making the team on the cheap. We will probably have about 10 draft choices and I would expect us to take advantage and use most of them given how many people are free agents.

What I do like is the veterans and key contributors that we have. We have the potential to lose some quality starters, but I like the holdover ratio we have. It is a lot better than I assumed it would be before I drafted up this template.

As of right now, every TE we have is a FA -- we will be drafting one of those for sure for the long term. That is an absolute guarantee.

From my perspective, in a perfect world we re-sign Demaryius, Julius and Knighton. At this point in time, I would assume Welker, Franklin, Montgomery and others walk. Due to age, ease of replacement and a few other factors.

I don't see us having the ability to bring back all three of Moore, Carter and Harris, Jr. As much as I like Harrism Jr. -- he will likely garner better offers on the market than we can simply afford. We have some youth who are under contract for a while (Roby, Webster) and Talib on a big deal. I think that is a place where we can see a replacement via draft or cheaper in free agency than the kind of coin Harris, Jr. could demand. I think the best case scenario is retaining one of these players. The silver lining is that safety is a position that a quality player can be drafted and contribute early. That is why I don't feel to worried about what we do here, given our highest potential players still remain on the roster in 2015.

I am just doing this -- really thinking out loud to see positions we will likely target in the draft. Even if the cap goes up to $145 million, money management is going to come into play. I really think Prater is on his last year here and quite frankly, spending the money we do on him and Colquitt is just crazy. I have listed potential cuts with their savings (CAP # - DEAD MONEY) to help see where we could go to get some relief. You guys feel free to comment or bring up questions.

Nice job Req. There's a lot of talent secured on the Broncos for next season. Too bad they (and by they I mean we) can't keep all the top guys.

I agree that Haris is gone. He's gonna get a sizable contract and there's just too much invested in CBs currently. I could see Green getting a cheap contract possibly, but more than likely not. I think theres a good chance Knighton isn't resigned like Bunkley was. He's a great player but he could demand a lot of cash like Harris. I'm not sure Sly or Austin can anchor so NT could be a major need. And who knows if Rahim the Dreams contract could look like. He could really help himself by playing well this season. As far as DT and Julius, I'd Imagine they're going to be here next season and I'd be incredibly disappointed to see either wearing another uniform.

Whatever happens, the Broncos are in great shape. It's almost too good to be true. I'd really like to know how much the Broncos could work with, but thats difficult to do right now or really anytime because there's so many things that could potentially happen to affect the cap space.

Nice post REQ, a lot of work went into that.
I'm not even going to try playing the guessing game about who we can sign and who we can't, at this point that's all you can do, guess.
I want everyone back but that won't happen!

I was looking at the comp picks, they're still using the same goofy formula, I think, so this is a guess to.
RFA we lost, Decker, Knowshon, Beadles, and Woodyard are really the only ones .
RFA we gained , Ward, Talib, and Samuels.
The formula is based on playing time and salary comparison, with Woodyard already on IR(IIRC) he won't count.
IMO we'll only get 1 maybe 2 comp picks if I'm wrong , I hope I am, let me know what you think.

Driver,

Decker, Knowshon, Beadles, Holliday, Woodyard, DRC, Phillips, Ayers and Adams are all players we lost via free agency. Woodyard isn't on IR -- he and Phillips are with the Titans playing.

Sanders, Talib and Ward will go against us in the compensatory formula. Ware will not, since he was cut and I am not sure whether or not Montgomery was cut or a free agent to begin with. Either way, I am not sure how all that works, but we will be getting some selections. According to Kaylore, not only is it determined by the $ they got in FA, but how they play as well. So hopefully those guys do well so we can bolster the type of selection we get.

I envision something like this:

1. Shaq Thompson, LB, Washington
2. Karlos Williams, RB, FSU
3. Jordan Jenkins, OLB, Georgia
5. (From Chicago) Adrian Amos, FS, Penn St.
5. Jake Smith, C/G, Louisville
6. Brett Boyko, OT, UNLV
7. Jared Roberts, K, CSU

I like Shaq a lot, I just have a feeling he is going to be a really high pick. Not a bad draft at all. It will be even better once those compensatory selections really help out. At this point in time, even if we re-sign Julius we will have to draft a TE.

You're right about WW he's not on Titans IR, Thought I'd read that he had been injured and they put him on IR.
You're also right about DRC totally forgot about him. The others don't matter
only the top 32 FA are considered for purpose of determining who will receive comp picks. None of the guys you listed (bolded) is going to make the top 32.

With DRC figured in we will get at least 2 and probably 3 Comp picks IMO.

Adding this; If we get at least 2 fairly high comp picks (for Decker and Knowshon) then we can use our later round picks to move up if we want to,
nice to have that ability for a change.

OTC has us at 111 in cap committments next year. Although i'm not sure how the carry-over works since we're at 7-8 under the cap right now, price might have a better idea of that.

If the cap is 145, that gives us around 28-30 mil to play with.

Prater and/or Colquitt are possible cuts/restrucutures.

For a team in a SB-window, thats a bad use of resources.

Caldwell could be cut to save a little money, as could some others.

There's also some guys on the PS to replace some as well. Paradis for Monty, Bibbs if he's not poached for Hillman, Barrett for Johnson, Boyett for Q or Rahim. Draft pick to replace everyones favorite player, TC.

And a good chance that Ununike makes the team next year, roster was too deep this year for him.

Some depth guys who are RFA's are cheap, Steven Johnson, Marshall, Brewer, few others.

Other than DT/JT, it will be interesting how Elway approaches this offseason provided he signs one/tags the other.

We have an assload of FA's.

If i had my way, i'd find a way to keep Knighton (5.5-6), Harris (7-8), and Rahim (5). Let Franklin walk.

But with Roby playing well, Webster under contract, i could see Harris leave unfortunately since he could receive some significant offers given all the big deals CB's are getting these days.

If that were to be the case, i'd use his money and bring back Wes on a cheap 1-yr pact if he makes it out alive this year, Nate and Virgil.

I'd really try to keep Knighton since we have no one to replace him. Marvin hasnt done much, Sly hasnt looked good either. Unrein is gone after the year as well. And DT's take time to develop, so relying on a high draft pick is a bad strategy.

Draft picks wise, we should be in pretty good shape as long as McManus is cut when Prater returns. Speaking of, he and Colquitt make way too much. One or both need to be cut/restructured.

I'd guess 2 or 3 comp-picks to give us 9-10 to replace some of the depth leaving.

At the moment, RT would be the 1st round pick and its not even a discussion right now but they did take Schofield in the 3rd so who knows.

NFL.com has a pretty good article showing big games this weekend and what team(s) will have scouts in attendance. Denver is set to be at the South Carolina game against Missouri.

Missouri at South Carolina

Clubs attending: Denver Broncos, Indianapolis Colts.

Three top players: Missouri (OL Evan Boehm, DE Shane Ray, DE Markus Golden); South Carolina (OL Corey Robinson, OL A.J. Cann, RB Mike Davis).

Brooks' take: "The intrigue will be Golden and Ray. Both guys are explosive coming off the edge as pass rushers. For South Carolina, it's about the running back, Mike Davis, and if he looks healthy. Or they could be watching the guard, A.J. Cann."

____________

Sounds good to me.

Great thread, Req.

According to GBN report the FAs we signed were:
Ward, Aquib and Sanders (3)

The ones we lost were:
Decker, Mincey (still on Cowboys roster), Beadles, Woodyard, DRC, Moreno, Phillips and Ayers. (8)

It would be good for us for Decker, Beadles, DRC, Moreno and/or Ayers to do well. Plus I don't see any of the teams they are on being a threat to our season. I could see us getting as many as 4 comps and hopefully one or two of them being a 4th or 5th rounder.

Looking at the GBN list, the two teams in line for most picks? Last year's SB participants Seattle and Denver. Patriots, Ravens and Indy also in line to get several supplemental picks. So good teams lose a lot.

Or like KC, you couldn't sign players being in cap he'll. they are also in line to get a few comp picks.

A fourth and a fifth would be nice. Having three selections in the fifth round would be great for getting depth since we have less than 40 guys signed to the active roster for 2015. Just have to hope some of the players we lost have great seasons which can help.

Jerry Jones was pissed, but taking Martin out of ND was the best decision they could have done. With Frederick, Martin and Smith they have a lot of quality OL. It's nice to see my old buddy Doug Free from NIU still playing as a starter in the NFL.

As for the Broncos, I hope they draft an OL early. Denver would be wise to snag an OL that can be a long-term starter. The OL for 2015 has Clady, Vasquez, Ramirez, Clark and Schofield as the only players signed. I personally am hoping for a mauling LG and there are a few good ones in this draft. Itís not something you have to take in round one, but needs to in rounds two or three.

I'm hoping for OL in Round 1.

I dont think we re-sign Franklin, and he hasnt looked good at LG either. Clark is also ?, i'd imagine they want to stick Schofield in the lineup next year.

Dallas has built their OL through the draft.

Frederick, Tyron Smith (arguably the best LT in football), and Zack Martin all 1st round picks.

And Leary/Free arent bad either.

With the Prater news, and them working out P's, i'm hoping for this, whether it happens is another story.

Tag Julius.

Sign DT to a backloaded deal.

Re-sign Harris to a Shields-type deal (just not sure Elway will)

And re-sign Knighton and Moore.

Good at tackle with declarations, pretty thing (top heavy 4-5 guys) at guard. Good for center.

I usually try to keep positive about the team in all ways but the OL is problematical and not likely to improve IMO! We definitely need to upgrade the interior. So I'll be looking at some of the Big10/12 prospects.
Got to watch UN at MIST a couple of weeks ago and I saw something I've been hoping for, a MLB who can play! He's not highly regarded but this kid is a player, he didn't make every tackle but he tried. His name is Roach and he might make a good pick in the later rounds.

RB Gurley YES! but I wonder about his head after this weeks stupidity!

Saw the Baylor TCU basketball game, the scoreboard looked like a pinball machine!
Had a Deja Vu moment went back to 1981/82 saw this young QB running all over the place throwing bombs to every receiver on the field and pulling 1st downs and scores out his _ss! Petty reminds me of him in many ways!

I have updated the OP with a table of our roster for next year. It will give you guys a visual of what we need to address next season. Kind of like throwing a puzzle together. Enjoy.

Compensatory Watch:

Zane Beadles (JAX), Wesley Woodyard (TEN), Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (NYG), Eric Decker (NYJ), Mike Adams (IND) and Jeremy Mincey (DAL) -- all on the Broncos last season have started every game for the teams they signed with this past off-season.
