Well obviously he is a FA so there could not be an announcement yet.

Some players don't know when to let go. You have chronic back problems and are almost guaranteed to miss a chunk of the season. You already won a Super Bowl. Go be with your family. Not only is it a bad personal decision IMO but it puts stress on the Broncos who are prepared for life without Ware. Now Elway has to decide between loyalty and using that $7M on a healthy player.

Von and Ray have raved about Ware's teaching skills. He is a leader. I wish he'd retire and try coaching.

Elway doesn't worry about that, I assure you. If he can't help the team it won't happen. Simple as that.

We aren't going to want to pay him what he'll need to make it worth sticking around for another year.

One possibility is to give him some kind of a player/coach roll, so that a much more affordable salary comes with less physical rigor and also acts as on the job training with a promise that he has a assistant transition roll open to him for the next few years. Would be a good way to get the mentorship and foot in the door under a good staff. If I was Elway, I'd propose something like that and if he's not interested, thank him for his services and move on.

True. The problem is that Ware can help the team but nobody knows when or for how long. Does he miss half the season? Does he miss only a few games? Will it happen Week 5 or will it happen Week 16 when the team needs him most? What about the playoffs? He's a ticking time bomb. Elway knows Ware is a great player when he is healthy. Does he take the gamble? $7M can buy another starting o-lineman.

The biggest loss would be his personality, I think there's a leadership void on the roster right now, and losing him would hurt even more. It's clear Von spent enough time under his wing to clean up his own act, hopefully he also rubbed off on him enough to step up and lead to keep guys like Talib, Ward and Wolfe reined in.

What if it's $1-2M base with incentives?

Agreed. That's a big reason I'd like him back if the price fits.

I'd probably rather have a comp pick at this point. Ware is great when healthy, but it's time to move on and let Ray and Barrett have their turn.

We still need his leadership and mentorship. A few million base plus playing time incentives. Get it done!

I am in favor of keeping him if nothing at all other than to continue to keep Von pushed towards greatness

Don't see us getting any comp picks for our FA's. Only Ware and possibly Williams might sign contracts elsewhere. Guessing whomever we lose will get cancelled out by the FA's we sign.

As to possibly keeping Ware, I could see Elway doing it on a team friendly deal. Elway stayed with Champ Bailey long after it was clear his skills had eroded.

3 mil base salary, incentives for PT and production.
If we can snag him for that then I want him back. otherwise it doesn't make sense.
