If there is a question mark here it would be letting he come back before he was completely healed but maybe there was no way to analyze that.
Absolutely, I agree with this. What I am saying is, Denver (as any smart business would do) capitalized on it so it's not really something that I imagine Kupe deep down is thrilled with but he realistically had no viable option otherwise. Honestly if it weren't for the injury settlement factor, he probably would have been cut.

I agree fully though that the FO has done a great job about being fair to both sides and smart about these things.

Depends, Beadles is a free agent next year I think, so they either have to resign him or keep Kuper

I tend to agree but who knows how next offseason will play out. Both JD and Zane are UFA's next year, if Kuper can get and stay healthy maybe they keep him around and let Zane or JD walk.

Beadles for 3 mil or Kuper for 5? Even if Beadles is closer to 4 mil he has been healthy and hasn't been damaged. In my opinion Kuper is gone after this year. I thought that before restructure too. He is great depth though.

This contract reflects the situation perfectly. Kupe's recovery is a question mark. No he is not great depth and no we have no idea if he will be around next year and beyond. IF he fully recovers than yes he will be a great back up while he fully mends and if he fully mends they can restructure his remaining years to fit his value to the team going forward.

You like to deal in absolutes, Kupe's is a fluid situation. He has the perfect wait and see contract.

Chris Kuper is on the field and in full uniform for the first time at training camp.

Yay! Thanks Kuper. Now you can stay a Bronco and close to my heart.

If he can come back even 70% of what he was, he will be valuable depth on what to this point has been a patchwork offensive line.

Honest question here - what would the injury settlement have been had we cut Kuper before his recovery?

The fact that he is on the field today and that he reached terms this morning for a new contract makes it look like that game of chicken was right at the point that someone had to swerve.

I will admit I don't know exactly but it was in the 1-2 million range from what I recall reading.

Restructuring Kupers contract makes a ton of sense. Its not like he has much leverage in negotiations as it is, so for 1-2 mil a year, he'd be an ideal backup at guard. I doubt he'd end up getting more money than that. Hope they work out a deal.

$1.05 million, exactly the same as his new base salary.

Thanks Tony, so in that regard the Broncos did do pretty good by him and to baja's point, are giving him a chance. It's a pretty low-risk move for a solid lineman.

Yup, they basically gave him his injury settlement but also got to keep him. He gets to stick around and has a chance to make more with incentives.
