Default NCAA declines to renew contract with EA Sports

Thought this might be interesting for some of you:

EA Sports' "NCAA Football" video game series could be coming to an end -- at the very least, it's about to undergo a major branding change.
The NCAA announced Wednesday that it will not renew its licensing contract with EA Sports, which expires next June. The 2014 edition of "NCAA Football" will be the last under its current name.

The relationship between the virtual college football players featured in the game and the real-life players upon which their EA Sports' counterparts appear to have been modeled is at the heart of the Ed O'Bannon lawsuit, which has since expanded into a class-action suit that could force athletics programs to split TV revenues with its players.

"We are confident in our legal position regarding the use of our trademarks in video games," the NCAA said in its statement. "But given the current business climate and costs of litigation, we determined participating in this game is not in the best interests of the NCAA."

Ok, so start paying the players, take away the scholarships of the players who do get paid.

Make the players likeness after they are drafted and become professionals. I know it would be a year late but if it keeps from paying the college kids, gamers will have to deal with a star college player's likeness (and now his name) a year later.

So the rest of the NCAA should start doing what the SEC does already.

The teams are pretty much randomized out of the box outside of their positions and abilities. You might have Johnny Football at QB, but he doesn't totally look like him and his jersey says QB1 when it ships to customers. However you get a toolkit to customize the players down to their features and how they wear their uniforms. You can even designate the shoe style. The voice over guys record all their last names so they can be used when you enter whatever name you enter. So EA ships the games with no official names or descriptions, but then the fanboys go and customize the rosters to look exactly like the players and then release them online.

the NFL 2K games were awesome and put Madden to shame. hopefully the NCAA game moves towards that platform.

All you guys celebrating this as a potential improvement: I don't think this is a case of them moving to a different company that will create a better NCAA game. The NCAA is saying that, due to legal concerns, they are no longer going to allow their brand to be used in any video games; EA's NCAA series was just the only one they had been licensing to.

Edit: sorry, just read the part that colleges and conferences will have own choice in licensing. Still, curious to see how that works out. I doubt it leads to them going with another company necessarily.

If any of you guys have the ps3 version, and need rosters, go to roster share, download roster, and enter spdirty. I got em from some fanboys that worked day and night for about 10 days getting the rosters and coaches as perfect as they can.

There's a couple guys that have them free (accepting charitable donations for their efforts) on the Xbox live network. You just need to login to their "locker" and down load it on Xbox live.

You hit it on the head. NCAA only stop working with EA because they were afraid it would cost them more money (paying players) then what they were getting.

The Ed O'Bannon lawsuit.

They will not go to another gaming company.

EA will get licensed through the CLC, and we will get something like "ESPN College Football 15.". EA will still get licensed with all the schools, stadiums, uniforms, bowls, etc. only they won't be restricted by the NCAA with garbage like no celebrations, no suspensions, academic I eligibility, students tearing down the goalposts after a big win, etc.

It'll be good.

You know, the 2k football games get so freakin overrated by people. I see people act like 2k5 was God's gift to football gaming. I didn't find it any better than Madden.
For the NCAA series, I think people are too quick to hate on EA, as they have been amazing with NCAA and building it up. I find it better than Madden in the past. What this could enable is them doing more with the game, such as putting back disciplinary actions, more celebrations, etc. that the NCAA didn't want.
Also, if NCAA wasn't going to let EA have a license, you can be damn sure they aren't going to have 2k get a license.

That said, competition is good. I really, really hope NFL drops the exclusivity contract so we can get another competitor into the ring again so EA steps up their game. Doubtful that will happen though.

I'd like to see players have a choice: get paid OR take a scholarship.
Might help to judge a players mentality when NFL teams are planning for the draft.
