Album:

For the sake of expediency I've only included two recordings of the original work, though admittedly they vary greatly from performance to performance. Feel free to post your own favorite!

Went with Op. 46 because it takes something really special for me to go away from the classic. The live Apocalyptica one with the cellos was pretty funny though.

It may not be fair to compare any of them to the original but tastes vary, and there's a lot of interesting variety in the interpretations.

As far as Apocalyptica goes, I must admit before I stumbled upon this I'd never thought of death metal cellists. And I'm impressed.

Their Metallica covers are the stuff of legend. They're really a cool group.

I've checked out some of their other stuff. It's pretty good, though this HOMK cover is still probably the best thing of theirs I heard. It just might be my favorite interpretive version, and there are a lot of good ones here.

The idea of putting lyrics to this music seems hokey (choral version aside) but the Rainbow lyrics are actually pretty cool.

I'm not sure I've heard anything by The Who that sounds as psychedelic as their version.
