Default Japan's suicide forest

Anyone watched this? Pretty sad and touching.

The Japanese should show more respect and speak English in these documentaries.

They sure love their suicide though.

And yet, the Japanese are 10th on the list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...y_suicide_rate

I'm guessing the rate in China is higher but they try to cover it up.

I find it odd that so many go so far out of their way to kill themselves in that forest. Very odd indeed...

I am much less upset with this phenomenon than I am with the ones that decide to take people with them when they want to off themselves.

I've read about this forest before and watched a couple of documentary's. It's very scary.

I think it would be terrifying to be lost in that forest. It's almost like a forest from the afterlife. I think what freaks me out the most is that they said that the forest is not frequented with many animals.

That is so hard to believe considering there is dead food (people) around the entire forest most of the time.

Damn, what's with Greenland? Their suicide rate is more than three times that of second place South Korea.

I'm guessing it's because it is a depressing, frozen, wasteland ****hole.

But I could be wrong.

I read this short story By a Writer named Mishima about a guy performing Hari Kari. One of the most gripping short stories I ever read. I know there is no way I could ever do that to myself.

They also have a tiny population so one suicide is a big deal. They might be #1 one year, and not make the top 25 the next.

It's not a total though. It's an average per 100K people. Unless you're saying last year was like an apocalypse of depression for them.

yep. The vikings named it greenland to get idiots to settle there. The vikings also wanted to divert people away from iceland because iceland is a beautiful place. So that's how those two places got their names. I think I learned this in elementary school. It was a public school. Have mercy on my soul if I'm wrong.

No but a single year is a bad data projection. In a country like Greenland, where the entire population is about 50k, 50 suicides would make them the world leader per capita. In one year of data it could be a particularly bad year.

Not saying they have low rates by any means. Just saying that one data point might be artificially inflated.

now now...

My wife (japanese) is terrified of any forest. We went off-roading a few months back for the first time and she was begging me to leave because the "ghosts" were there.

We won't be going back there again.

et al.

I get it that there aren't a lot of Japanese people on this board --and that such comments are probably made in jest--so some probably think it's ok to use racial slurs like "japs" and "Nips," thinking no one will care. But my wife is Japanese and thus my children have Japanese ancestry. I also dearly love my in-laws and the country they call home. When visiting, I've never been treated so kindly by them. Not that I expect you to give a damn, but I find these sorts of posts offensive and I thought most have risen above the need to use racial epithets as part of their jokes. I also understand that the age and IQ level of some posters here aren't much larger then their shoe sizes but not sure that excuses the behavior. Hopefully, you can learn from experience as you mature that others might take your jokes the wrong way. Not that I think there's too many ways to understand referring to entire race of people and their culture as "weird" can have too many meanings other than what one gets from the face of the comment. Nor can slurs like "Jap" and "Nip" have too many other meanings.

But that's just me. And I'm weird.

Similar with Native American culture. I've heard of a belief that ghosts inhabit the mountains.

I don't know man, has to better than jumping in front of a moving train. Which happened to delay my commute to work a few times when I was living there (wasn't my train though, just delayed while the clean and investigation was going on)
