Apparantly you've never heard of the Mississippi rednecks baseball team

If a person is Indian and says its offensive how can non indians argue with him over it? You aren't indian you don't know. Just admit that Indians not powerful enough to get it changed. No one cares about them. But it is offensive just not to a group powerful enough to make it stick.

How many of those names are used as pejoratives?

What I don't get is whatever the meaning of the word was, now it's being used in a positive light.... The name of a sports team is chosen to portray or represent something positive, admirable or worthwhile and is something that a fan or the city/locale where a team is from would hold in high regard and with civic pride.

Because of this when Notre Dame's team name draws on the derogatory stereotype that Irish (which I am, BTW) are normally so drunk that all they do is fight, it doesn't bother me at all.

I thought "Redskin" referred to Shanahan's tan...

The Fighting Irish name didn't come from the Irish stereotype of people being scrappy, drunks and back in the day -- perpetually in trouble with the law. It was more or less used because of their ability to deal with and overcome adversity (the football team) on the gridiron, not because Irish people tend to have adverse demeanors and behavior.

Yes, they were worried about adopting it as the official nicknames because of some of the connotations that can be inferred, but it wasn't meant pejoratively nor was a regular term in the language to describe Irish-Americans. They have plenty of other pejoratives for that "Fighting Irish" certainly wasn't one of them. To try to even relate "Fighting Irish" to "Redskins" is a ridiculous argument.

Redskins offensive? Well, yeah; they were 5th in Yds per Game, 4th in Points per Game.

That's why the Arkansas State Indians changed their name. I grew up in that town. I used to hang out at Indian Mall. Everything in town was named after the Indians. Now it's all PC.

I'm glad I got to play cowboys and Indians back in the day without people crying about it. I'm sure the word is already out on playgrounds that its called cowboys and native Americans, if its not already banned to play.

Nobody plays with cowboy dolls anymore, children prefer the new fancy space rangers with wrist lasers.

Lol. Have your kid play any sort of game on the school playground that involves the mention of guns, fake or imaginary.. and see what happens. Then add in the element of imaginary hate crime.

Yes, it should not be done unless we find oil or gold under the soil. If that happens, it is time to have the Indians assimilate with us...by any means necessary.

I volunteered for Junior Achievement like 4 years ago and got assigned to a room of kindergartners. I was going to read a book to them and told everyone to come to the carpet and to sit "Indian style" because that's what it was always called for me growing up. The teacher gasped and pulled me outside to tell me Indian is a word the school likes to discourage being used in the building. Apparently it is now called "criss-cross-apple-sauce." Not sure how apple sauce has any relation to a sitting position but whadya gonna do?

The whole time I was reading I couldn't help wonder what the Indian kid (as in Sub-Continent) that was sitting in the front playing with my shoe laces called himself...
