. I've heard stories of them finding usable hard drive data from sunken ships. I doubt the hard drive is "unrecoverable".

Dude when the director of the IRS says they are unrecoverable they are unrecoverable. You don't think he would lie do you?

Nobody will go to jail for this, no one will be punished, and before you know it all will be forgotten once the talking heads and radio heads get bored of this and move onto something else.

We have the government we deserve.

The IRS will have no problem finding my tax return (or anyone's) if the entire systems fails.

They'll use one of many backup systems........which apparently failed in this instance.

Flashback to April of 2007. The Bush administration was in the midst of dual scandals regarding: 1) the outing of Valerie Plame, a covert CIA agent whose identity was deliberately compromised as payback for her husband's criticism of the Bush lies that led to the invasion of Iraq, and 2) the unethical firing of eight federal attorneys for politically ideological reasons. Additionally, there were questions about Karl Rove improperly using a Republican National Committee e-mail account that the White House later said disappeared. While Congress was investigating these activities, the White House announced that two years of emails were lost and unavailable to the committees of jurisdiction

So your point is, since The (R) had scandals, the (D) should be allowed to get away with anything.

You want to know where the problem is? Look in the mirror.

Until we start holding ALL of these people accountable for their actions, the problem will continue to get worse.

****, Nixon was a freaking saint compared to the current administration. I wish we had the media and demand of accountability from the country that we had in the 70s.

Baja,

You do realize that these days people routinely bypass the MSM and get their info from the internet? Not to mention the websites of all kinds of foreign news sources are available online. It's not like we have no choice but to get our news from the US MSM.

Alternate news sources are growing like wild fire and that is a very good thing but still the majority of Americans get their news from the MSM, that is why it is called the Main Stream Media.

Turn your TV, or radio, or pick up a newspaper, and the only information available is from one of the big 6.

MSM is readily available and blaring to the vast majority of Americans.

We all know that Bush lied also. They all do. The point is the Bush White House offered up Scooter Libby during the Plame CIA disaster. Obama goes further by saying nope Lerner is clean and she should not get in trouble. Someone needs to get in trouble over this. That's how its done.

Scandals get drug on under Obama because he hides and lies and offers up no scapegoats like other Presidents do.

Man, you're pathetic. Congress starts sniffing around the IRS. IRS hard drives start dropping like flies. The IRS claims it's running a 6-month tape rotation causing all email backups to be overwritten after that.

Here's a no-brainer for you. If (as an agency administrator) you were notified of a potential congressional investigation, and with 7 supposedly newly-dead hard drives in the mix, wouldn't a sane person say "Hey guys, I know this evil-lottery run of bad luck with hard drives is hard to believe, but to be on the safe side, let's just set those backup tapes aside and not overwrite just in case we need those emails"

Because, in the real world, if you're notified of even potential litigation, or investigation you're required by law to put a hold on all potential evidence (no overwriting of data allowed.) Based on just what we already know, some people at IRS should be looking at some jail time.

Which makes naming a special prosecutor a slam-dunk. And once you start threatening some technical and mid-level administrative staff with some jail time, I think we'll start to see a much more complete picture of what really happened in the IRS.
