Some nuggets

"The Wetumpka Tea Party, from Alabama, sponsored training for a get-out-the-vote initiative dedicated to the “defeat of President Barack Obama” while the I.R.S. was weighing its application.

And the head of the Ohio Liberty Coalition, whose application languished with the I.R.S. for more than two years, sent out e-mails to members about Mitt Romney campaign events and organized members to distribute Mr. Romney’s presidential campaign literature.

Representatives of these organizations have cried foul in recent weeks about their treatment by the I.R.S., saying they were among dozens of conservative groups unfairly targeted by the agency, harassed with inappropriate questionnaires and put off for months or years as the agency delayed decisions on their applications.
"

"The I.R.S. is already separately reviewing roughly 300 tax-exempt groups that may have engaged in improper campaign activity in past years, according to agency planning documents. Some election lawyers said they believed a wave of lawsuits against the I.R.S. and intensifying Congressional criticism of its handling of applications were intended in part to derail those audits, giving political nonprofit organizations a freer hand during the 2014 campaign. "

Also because there are some that will claim the IRS is bias:

"Emerge America, which trained women to run for office, was granted 501(c)(4) recognition in 2006, but its status was revoked in 2012. Training people how to run for office is not in itself partisan activity, but the I.R.S. determined that the group trained only Democratic women and was operated to benefit one party. "
Let's plain this up so you and your friend the kneepadded Grey Lady can figure this out.

Neither the New Yorker nor the LA Times nor CNN nor Ted Deutch mentioned probably the most popular and well-known 501(c)4 in the country, Organizing for Action (formerly known as Obama for America), which runs the @barackobama twitter feed and owns BarackObama.com. They identify as a social welfare organization too. In its targeting of Tea Party and patriot groups, the IRS went after political dissenters for trying to enjoy the same tax-exempt status that the president’s fan club and other liberal groups get. That’s the scandal; the IRS targeting dissenters, not that those dissenters get tax-exempt status, while the attempt to demonize 501(c)4 groups but fail to mention OFA probably ought to be a scandal of its own.

Yep this is a case of liberals not caring because the govt was going after groups they disagree with. Pretty scary they have reached that point. They care more about the fact they are entrenched in the media and can downplay it, make it go away, then say it was much to do about nothing. Scary stuff.

Finally got some real numbers - only 8 out 2,774 (CY2012 applications) were denied.

And this very good piece on how this situation happened.

You do realize that as long as group is spending less the 48% of time tied to political cause it can be a non-profit 501(c)(4)?

I agree it crappy law, and both sides are taking advantage of it. But instead of whining that other side got an advantage, change the freaking law to remove tax exempt status for all groups.

2012? Didn't the IRS "correct" the issue early in 2012? (when the media, IG and Congress started asking some pretty pointed questions)

That 'real number' is about the most irrelevant number that could be imagined.

Yeah, this is a great political system you're setting up.

I was speaking to your own personal logic, and how reckless it would be to apply it universally.

There are probably 10's of thousands of dumb laws on the books. Many enforced. Many not so much.

Equal enforcement of those laws isn't just an admirable goal. It's just as important as the enforcement itself. Probably more so in cases like this.

Greenpeace calls out Mitch McConnell’s IRS hypocrisy with full page ad in Lexington Herald-Leader
On this page Media release - May 17, 2013
Action follows open letter volunteering to testify in IRS investigation in light of Bush-era audit
Lexington, May 17, 2013 —Today Greenpeace placed a full-page ad in the Lexington Herald-Leader reminding Senator McConnell that “Free Speech Isn’t Just for People You Agree With.“ The Kentucky Senator has stated he is “deeply disturbed” by the recent allegedly politically motivated audits of tea party groups by the IRS, though he was notably silent during similar activities targeting progressive organizations during the Bush years.

The ad comes on the heels of Greenpeace Executive Director Phil Radford publishing an open letter to the Congressional Committee leading the investigation into the audits. The letter called on the committee to widen the scope of its investigation to politically motivated investigations from years past, including those that targeted Greenpeace, Rainforest Action Network, and the NAACP.

The letter states, in part:

“In the past dozen years, Greenpeace, Rainforest Action Network and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) were subject to politically-motivated tax investigations by the IRS and Congress. Greenpeace is offering to testify about being the target of politically motivated audits in 2004, because regardless of which party holds power, these abuses are egregious and must stop.”

The ad is part of Greenpeace’s continued work to promote good governance, regardless of the party in power.

"While Mitch McConnell's constituents clearly care about the First Amendment and the environment, the Senator continues to show he cares only about politics,” Radford said. “Sadly, it doesn’t come as a shock that he would leap to defend the Tea Party while ignoring the rights of groups like Greenpeace. The true test of any politician’s commitment to free speech comes when the rights of the people that he votes against are being trampled, not when he simply wants his friends to win.”

They should investigate all the way back and see if other admins have been able to use the IRS to attack groups they don't agree with. If it goes deeper then just this for sure it needs a special investigator Riggs.

Wonder why the former head of the IRS visited Obama 157 times

Number of visits from IRS head to the White House during the Bush administration = 0

By Stephen Dinan -The Washington Times Monday, September 23, 2013
Lois G. Lerner, the woman at the center of the IRS tea party targeting scandal, retired from the agency Monday morning after an internal investigation found she was guilty of “neglect of duties” and was going to call for her ouster, according to congressional staff.

Her departure marks the first government official to pay a significant price in the scandal, though Republicans were quick to say her decision doesn’t put the matter to rest and pointed out that she still can be called before Congress to testify.

That pesky story liberals and democrats would rather go away quietly since it ruins the indoctrinating narrative that government is only corrupt when republicans are in charge, but suddenly all is law abiding and no abuse of power when democrats hold the top spots. We were told(attempts at more liberal indoctrinating) that there was nothing to this story. Sure.

What is funny is that the House Cmte chairman has asked the NSA in a letter to provide all metadata relating to her emails.

Yeah. Old news. It was never even a real scandal, hence why the story died. Remember the "scandal" was the belief the irs was only targeting conservative groups, which BTW turned out to be total BS.

So you actually believe the emails were to show nothing anyways and their mysterious erased loss wasn't deliberate? Keep sniffing that liberal glue I guess. It is working if it keeps you from believing anything is wrong with this administration.

The lost emails tell you all you need to know. Obama was involved, and they had to hit the nuclear button on it no matter how bad it looked. Better to live with accusations than face the truth.

No matter really. Obama isn't going to last. He's dragging his party down with him, and they'll only take so much more of this before they start looking for escape hatches.

They nuked the emails. All we can know for sure is that he was involved in targeting the tea party groups, hence the need to nuke the emails. Why nuke emails that are going to exonerate you?

How the hell is the IRS storing email on local machines in this day and age?

"He"? Obama has been cleared of all this **** long time ago. Issa has come out and said as much.
BTW, we do know for that the irs was looking at both liberal and conservative groups.
