John Elway officially became a Bronco after a trade was worked out with Baltimore.

And 14 years ago yesterday he retired. It was 30 years ago yesterday that Acorsi announced the trade to Denver.

One of the best days in Broncos franchise history. Chris Hinton ended up being a great player too but that deal is so one sided. Not quite as good as Raiders screwing up the draft every year recently but I would say pretty close.

So far in Elway’s career, his offensive linemen and wide receivers have been voted to the Pro Bowl a combined seven times. In Dan Marino’s 15 seasons, Miami Dolphins offensive linemen and wide receivers have been selected to the Pro Bowl 30 times. … Though usually surrounded by a human rummage sale, Elway has won more games as a starter than any other quarterback in NFL history (138). It’s the equivalent of carving Mount Rushmore with a spoon or composing Beethoven’s Ninth on a kazoo.
But Elway’s career has been about more than just winning. It has been about escaping defeat a half page from the end of the novel, leaping over pits of fire with the microdot hidden in his cigarette lighter. On first down Elway was ‘pretty average,’ his Stanford coach Paul Wiggin once said. But when the elementary school kids are being held hostage and the detonator reads 00:03, who would you rather have clipping the wires than Elway? He may be the only quarterback in history who could stand on his own two-yard line, trailing by five with less than two minutes to play, no timeouts left, windchill –5, and cause the opposing coach to mutter, ‘We’re in trouble.’” --Rick Reilly, Sports Illustrated, qtd. in Austin Murphy’s The Super Bowl: Sports Greatest Championship
Quote:
With his arm strength and mobility, he was a rare combination of talents. I don’t know if I’ve seen a quarterback who had the ability to run and the ability to throw in one package like John Elway. He is certainly a player that will be missed in the NFL. He was a great asset to our league.”--New York Jets head coach Bill Parcells
Quote:

Staubach, the quarterback most often compared with Elway for his ability to improvise and late-game heroics, watched "The Drive" with the admiration one great athlete can have for another. 'I just marveled at it,' Staubach says. 'After that, you knew when you watched him that he'd never quit, even if he was playing a bad game.'"--quoted from the Associated Press

Dan Marino's what I call a 'Yeah, but . . .' guy. As great as he is and as great as he's been, people will always say, 'Yeah, but he never won a Super Bowl.' I think Marino's going to have to live with that for a long time.
People used to talk about all the Super Bowls Elway lost. Well, I called a few of those games, and what people seem to forget is that those teams weren't that good. John Elway was the sole reason why those Bronco teams were playing in the Super Bowl. He was the closest thing to a one-man gang I've ever seen. Elway absolutely thrived under pressure. When you got down to the end of the game and his team was behind, he knew what to do. He was one of the few quarterbacks to play the game who really knew the game. He knew what to do, how to move the ball, how to save time. And he relished those decisions.
A lot of people say they want the ball to take the last shot, but there's not a lot of them who really want it. John Elway wanted the ball."--John Madden

To this day I still have pictures of John hanging over my desk. Gene is only on the bookcase, that should say a lot.

Not sure I would want to relive the SB beatdowns but those seasons sure were fun up to the penultimate games.

I dunno, we've got a pretty good team now, and I am one that is really looking forward to the next few years. The biggest difference I see between the Manning Broncos and the Elway Broncos of the 80's & early 90's is that PM will not be "a one man gang", as Madden put it.

And 30 years ago the nuggets were still alive in the playoffs (loved that 30-30 clip of the elway trade announcement during the nuggets game).

I remember a guy I worked with saying "what's everyone so excited about? He's just a quarterback."

30 years ago today I was working for a major telephone company in So Cal . About 12 years prior to that our family was transferred to Denver for about 4 years. That is how my family became Broncos fans.

In the early 80's, I didn't get to watch the Broncos much because they were rarely on TV where we lived. Consequently, I didn't really know much at all about the Broncos because of this, and I just never made sports a priority. Also, I rarely, if ever, followed college ball.

So anyway, one day I walked into the office after reading that some guy named John Elway got traded to the Broncos, and asked a buddy who did follow college sports: "who is this Elway guy and should I be excited?"

I remember clearly him saying "he is the greatest QB prospect since Joe Nameth, only better. I can't stand him because he acts like a spoiled brat. That being said, he will take your team to the SB multiple times."

Well, that was all I needed to know. From that day on, I became beyond a fan of the Broncos. I became a fanatic.
