Default NBA to keep Kings in Sacramento ... anybody?

Unanimous vote by league advisory committee today. Owners generally rubber stamp those recommendations.... full vote next week.

Feel bad for Seattle, because they lost the Sonics and then this seemed to be like a done deal only a couple months ago.

Pretty ****ing lame. NOW Stern's little group finds their backbone? They helped escort the Sonics to ****ing Oklahoma, and now this?

Saw a tweet that Clay Bennett was on the group that unanimously voted to keep the team in Sacto. Talk about salt on the wound.

Cautionary tale for all NBA cities: Run your arena into the ground, and this could be happen to you:

Bennett? Ouch ......

Kings have been low-hanging fruit so long, a great arena and a great plan like this one, people were sure it was going to happen. Oh well.......

Key isn't THAT bad of a facility, and it was just renovated in '95. Personally, I think extorting money from communities with an "or else we'll move your team" is despicable.

It's a very nice building actually, saw Journey/Foreigner/Night Ranger there last fall. But for whatever reason it had fallen to dead last in the league in revenue generation ... too little even for The Idea Man. (Paul Allen).

I was reading a rumor that pretty much said the reason the Kings are being handled so gently is because they are technically one of the oldest franchises and Stern is all about the sentimentality. He supposedly doesn't want the name to change unless it retains some of the "Royals" legacy that it once had which it most certainly will change to the Supersonics if it goes back to Seattle.

Yet he had no problem moving the Sonics - the only Seattle franchise to have won a title - to Oklahoma.

Stern is a piece of ****.

eh, the kings are not and haven't really been relevant in the nba for sometime now. That being said, I'd rather have a franchise in Seattle than another one in CA. They already have the Lakers, Clippers, Warriors, and now will still have the Kings.

Stern will do everything in his power to make sure the biggest teams in the biggest markets make it to the championship. He had his chance with the lockout to stop all the superstars from going to same cities and he failed.

If he ran the NFL, there is no way in hell a team like Green Bay would go to the Super Bowl, let alone win.

I agree Stern is terrible.

But the big markets go to the championship because they have the superstars, not because Stern makes them go.

Championships like Spurs-Pistons would not have happened if those were not the best 2 teams.

Yep. Too many franchises in cali. Sacramento? What is there? I wanted to see the move to Seattle. But, I get that it's right to allow the home team to do whatever they can and keep the team.

Seattle is far and away the best thing to happen to the NBA. In this day and age, I would be EXTREMELY surprised if Seattle becomes anything less than a way for NBA teams to manipulate fans and cities into pouring millions into their pockets. Well played NBA. You're still a total **** sport that I could not care any less about, but you definitely bent Sacramento over.

Seattle completely ****ted on the Sonics before they left. the NBA tried everything they could to keep them there and Seattle basically thought there was no way the Sonics would be moved and they wouldn't have to actually do something.

Sacramento has actually done everything they can to work with the NBA to keep the Kings. the Maloofs just **** on everything and now the league is ****ting on them in return.

Yeah. Know why? Because that **** muffin Clay OUT AND OUT LIED TO EVERYONE INCLUDING THE LEAGUE about his intentions to move the team.

they did that crap well before Clay even came into the picture.
they were trying to get a stadium deal done for 4-5 years before the team was sold.

Come on. Re-watch game 6 of LA vs Sacremento for a few years back.

The league fixes playoff series by favoring one team over another via officiating. You NEVER get the unwatchables advancing. Milwaukee was robbed a few years ago when they had Cassel too, and he flat out said as much.

Denver never got a fair shake against LA.

The calls that swing the games always go to the same type of teams. That is not a coincidence.

Funny you mention the Spurs, everyone assumes they are a small market, when the reality is they draw major markets in ratings throughout Texas when they are playing deep in the playoffs. Detroit was pretty much the only viable eastern conference team that year also, besides being a league favorite and decent market.

This is all backwards ... everyone here knew they'd be moved unless there was a new arena.

Guys, the configuration of Key Arena ruled out most if not all the kinds of revenue enhancements owners expect these days. Not just luxury suites, but all variety of money-makers including restaurants, bars, other attractions that draw fans there sooner and keep them there later. Parking is a sweet plum, all the new venues are designed to maximize parking revenue ... but Key/the Sonics got virtually nothing from parking. There's plenty of parking for fans, but almost all of it is adjacent lots and structures.

Yep, in fact Howard Schultz and the city sued Bennett. Schultz for their violation of a one year "best efforts" clause to stay, and the city for their breaking the arena lease. They turned up letters and e-mails between the OKC partners proving they never considered staying here. Problems were, 1) Schultz himself had already tried everything to make it work before selling, best efforts and then some, and 2) the lease had I think just three more years. Bennett did pay to go, but I don't think it was much.

Schultz loves basketball, could have way-easily afforded to keep the team, even in Key Arena. But the businessman in him just couldn't do it. He wanted the city to pay for a weird-looking upgrade to Key - bulging add-ons to the building, but it didn't happen and he threw up his hands and sold.

Oh and as a Seattle Resident. I LOVE this. Makes it that much more important for us to get an NHL team.

Huge Kings fan and I attend several games a year. The Kings have great, loyal fans and they remind me of Broncos fans. The biggest issue with this saga is the god damn Maloofs. They are a bunch of greedy, senseless bastards. Thats all anyone needs to know.

The Sac community is doing everything they can to keep the Kings and it wont be because of lack of fan support that they move. Im hoping against all odds the the Maloofs sell to a local owner and keep the team in Sac where it belongs.
