Robert Ayers - DL - Broncos

The Denver Post reports "it's looking more likely" that DE Robert Ayers will open 2013 in a starting role.
With Dwight Freeney seeking $6 million per year in free agency and their interested in free agent John Abraham waning, Denver is exploring low-cost alternatives to replace Elvis Dumervil. Rather than overpay for pricey veterans, the Broncos "are starting to warm up" to the idea of starting Ayers on rushing downs and drafting a situational pass rusher.

Doom screwed up. The offer Denver gave Doom on that Friday at 11:00 am was the best deal as it turned out and Doom lost money by not taking the deal at 1:00 pm
Except there was no full guarantee next year at that point and 500k less than the Ravens offered. So no, he did better with the Ravens than he would have under that deadline proposal. Not putting their true best offer on the table before cutting him was an epic ****up.

And I'm not talking about whether the Colts did the right thing with Manning. Only speaking to whether getting paid while warming bench means you owe your team some sort of future compensation in negotiations.

We should cut Manning too. We've got a 6th round pick so we can just go pick up the next Tom Brady.

Lemonier or Jenkins would be great. A lot of guys who can come in as situational dudes.

Best move, try and develop whats left of Ayers, and start developing the future stud.

Interesting too because Ayers is a FA after this year. Had we kept Elvis for one year we could have resigned Ayers for cheap. Now that he's a potential starter he has the spotlight and could price himself off the team, leaving yet another void to fill.

Giants make sense for Dansby, but I think the Giants will draft an ILBer this year...

Good. Hopefully, they will give Malik Jackson a fair look as well.

Fans often talk about "developing players" like the NFL is a video game where you allocate experience points.

I cant believe that we would go into the season with Ayers as the most experienced DE on the roster.

Ayers 3 yrs
Wolfe 1 yr
Jackson 1 yr
Beal never really played

That would be one of the least experienced positions in the NFL

Yep, NFL coaches do NOT spend time Developing players, they just do not. It's the dedicated guys who work hard and take the bull by the horns when they get their chance who truly develop in the NFL, especially in today's game.

The CBA restricting OTA's and offseason workouts actually hinders player development more so than in the past as well. Only so many offseason reps to go around now, and its less likely these guys get any physical reps now.

The lack of a farm league to give guys who are not ready for prime time or just guys who sit behind an established starter some game experience is really hurting a lot players.

If we're thinking outside the box for a PRS:
Travis Long OLB 4 year starter 19.5 sacks 6'4" 250 lbs. Projected 3-4 round.
David Bass OLB 4 year starter 40.5 sacks 6'4" 265 lbs. Projected 5-6 round.

Recovered from his bruised hip flexor, Texas DE Alex Okafor ran forty times of 4.88 and 4.89 at the Longhorns' Pro Day.
The injury knocked Okafor out of the Combine, but he's healthy now. An early- to mid-round prospect, Okafor also posted a 36-inch vertical leap and 9-foot-4 broad jump. Okafor led the Big 12 conference with 12 sacks last season.

The "Beast" aka Bass would be a good pick IMO.

Also it's just not just the sacks he gets it is the TTF's that he brings.
Senior 16 TFL's 11.5 sacks
Junior 20 TFL's 14.5 sacks
Soph 10.5 TFL's 8 sacks
Fresh 9.5 TFL's 6.5 sacks

Here is Bass combine results vs Jones
Datone Jones combine results
40 4.8
225 29
Vert 31.5
Broad 112 inches
3 cone 7.32
20 yard shuttle 4.32

David Bass
40 4.84
225 20
Vert 30.5
Broad 111
3 cone 7.03
20 yard shuttle 4.33

Keep an eye on Jeremy Beal. 29 sacks in the Big Twelve is no joke. He also had 58 TFL's. I thought he looked good last preseason.
