Default Chiefs release Cassel

Chiefs release Matt Cassel
Posted by Mike Wilkening on March 14, 2013, 10:49 AM EDT

Getty ImagesThe Chiefs announced the release of quarterback Matt Cassel on Thursday, multiple media outlets said. (The club’s official Twitter account retweeted a report from a writer for the club’s website saying Cassel had been cut.)

After a 27-touchdown, seven-interception season for a division-title winning Kansas City club in 2010, Cassel struggled the next two seasons. The Chiefs’ trade for Alex Smith and the signing of Chase Daniel signaled the franchise would be going in a different direction at quarterback in 2013.

Cassel was due to earn a base salary of $7.5 million in 2013

that's too bad. I was hoping Reid would keep him, just for the meltdown on chiefsplanet lol.

His statistics are identical to Alex Smith. I would have thought someone would give them a 2nd rounder for him!!

You know whoever gets that backup spot will have a great preseason while Smith struggles, just to keep the QB drama going. KC cannot do it any other way.

The Broncos, Chargers and raiders should all retire his number.

Nah, he will go to the Lions or Rams some similarly irrelevant team. The Patriots seem happy with Mallett.

Matt Cassel is going to be punch line to the joke that is the Kansas City Chiefs, for a very long, long time.

Kevin Kolb, Matt Cassel and Ryan Fitzpatrick - all got about 60 million dollars deals and got cut.

For the love of God and all that is holy, please, please, ****ing please let Geno slip to the Bills this year.... I can take Cassel, Kolb or Jackson as a backup IF we finally have a QB... its only been 15 ****ing years....

There is concern about the Bills bretheren that the Jets will move Revis for a 1st, and package that pick move up in the draft to get a QB, before Az, Oak or Buf... I don't know, that is taking quite the leap on a prospect that is solid, but by no means Luck.... more than anything I just hope the Jets continue to suck, I almost hate them more that the Pats... Miami is the team to watch in that Division though, there coming up fast

I'm envisioning something more along the lines of "Matt Cassel, Ricky Stanzi and Brodie Croyle walk into a bar..."

Cassel is currently on vacation in Minnesota and the Vikings really want him.

Looks like it's gonna happen.

I still can't believe how much money they paid Chase Daniel to be their backup QB.

Chase McDonald's, I mean Daniel is going to bank $6.8 million bucks this season.

Chase Daniel's deal with KC voidable after '13. Gets $3M to sign, makes $3.8 in '13, $2.4 in '14 and $3.8M in '15
