Question. If Doom comes back ONLY as a SITUATIONAL pass rusher do you think he commands 12m? He is NOT a 3 down player at all, his value is not that high, he has been exposed the past couple of years in the run game.

His pass rushing skills have deteriorated as well. He was singled up vs a LT the MAJORITY of the time and just wanted to bull rush a guy weighing 100lbs his size. His sacks came vs terrible qb's at end of games.

I think Doom is a pretty good player, but he isn't worth a lot more than $6-8m a year. He is a liability against the run, but so would Freeny or Abraham or Osi. That being said, if Doom were to be cut, his production could be replaced by a guy like Freeney. I think the Broncos would like to use Doom as more of a situational player, $6m a year for a pass rush specialist is quite a bit. Base D would likely include him b/c the Nickel really is our base D now. One thing you can say about Doom, he has always been a good teammate. He is a good guy to have in the locker room. Hope he stays for a chance at a championship.

I think Doom a great player its just that his contract is a joke. I don't normally care if the team overpays but that number sticks out. IMO Baileys does also but whatever. IMO Bailey should trim 2-3 million off his number to go for it right now. Use that money to bring in a vet safety and completely dominate on the back end.

Elway said they are in fine shape salary cap wise. I have been watching the games from last year constantly and Dumerville never gives up and always gives tremendous effort. He puts a lot of pressure on the QB too. It will be a shame to lose a class guy like him, I hope they work something out.

I really hope it works out too.

But Dumervil didn't play like an elite DE last year. He had a good year but not a great one and he was once again injured.

Ayers is not the same pure pass rusher but I'm confident that Ayers can at least fill in some of the void if we do release Dumervil.

I don't disagree with you fully Drek, it's not exactly apples to apples here though. NFL contracts often have injury clauses in them.

I know that isn't the case here, but I've seen you use this example a couple times and it's not really the same at all, at least not as black and white as you make it out to be.

Good write-up. The folks arguing that "Doom>Kruger/Avril therefore he will get paid more" haven't been paying attention to how the NFL FA market operates. It's not as simple as that equation.

There was nothing last year that would imply we see Doom as a situational pass rusher. You do know that he was like the 3rd player with most snaps on defense? Do you?

Jason Hunter is out, if they really like Ayers they would have played him on running downs and used Doom as a pass rusher. But no, Dooem played most of the snaps on a defense that finished 3rd against the run. When was the last time we ranked top 5 against the run?

Only stupid people call Doom a situational pass rusher. Now, that Fox and JDR think they could find someone much less expensive and still make the scheme work? that's another thing.

But if Doom comes back, there wont we anything situational about his role.

No, wish I did. I post links when they are discussing topics related to our discussions here because they often do it better than anyone here does. They do good work. Not flawless, but very solid.

Funny, I was among the first (if not the first) to post links to PFT back when it was a fledgling site and was regularly bashed for it. It's now gone big time and become the go-to site for NFL rumors and story aggregating. I got hooked on IAOFM through another Mane poster or two (don't recall who). But I think it's the go-to site for Broncos info, both as an aggregator and for its original material.

Dumervil played more snaps than anyone else on the DL, and more snaps than anyone in the front 7 save Von.

Meaning, Del Rio trusts him against the run, and managed to put out a great run defense with Doom as a major contributor.

3rd in the league against the run. I'm no offensive coordinator but if he was "so bad at the run" wouldn't teams have gameplanned for that?? Pretty stupid to say your starting DE sucks against the run, while being ranked 3rd in the league against it.
